I just popped on to another forum, and I saw the grammar there was horrible.
And now, when I check here, I see we all talk on the internet as if we were writing an essay for an exam. So just a quick question, why is our grammar here so good while other places people tlk lke tis, n they dont even cre abut theyr gramer.
Is it just me, or do we all have good grammar here?
Nah, while most SK's of the forum do have semi-correct grammar, there's still at least one post a day I see that's painful to look at.
(Randomly wanted to make a one of my Spiralimericks about an elderly fellow....v_v (Oh, and this isn't meant to insult you Korakc! =P))
There once was an elderly chap,
Who remarked about Korakc's new cap,
"Tis strange to see,
And quite dreary,
So take it off now, 'cause it's crap"
What talking you do is?
Them very not good semicircle have all the underpants.
@Korakc- Why thank you! =D
@Luguiru- Love how you left the punctuation and capitalization in. =P
I would try to like and that like talk.
:P
Some older people decide to type horribly. Here is the most horrible grammar that I've encountered. This is the example of horrible grammar.

I learned grammar through playing this game. Thank you, Spiral Knights :]
My guess is that it is the lack of grammar Nazis who anger people into using bad grammar to anger the grammar Nazis.
Looking that I am not a Native-English speaker, I used to have a lot of grammar and spelling mistakes. But..learning in the school, and in the game, I tried my best to keep up with good English. Whenever you see a post with bad grammar ( Be it either because of trolling - Non-English speaker - Other desires.) it feels weak and dumb. Thus, I started to care about grammar and spelling, so if I ever decide to make a post in the forums, forumers do actually read it, rather than skipping it and saying that you have bad grammar.
I have the feeling, that I made some mistakes in the comment here....
You might not have noticed it but here's an example.
New thread!
"omg plz rmove aa it lik hax!!!"
Now how about this one
"AA/AT: Why it should be removed"
Which one would you think would get more hate and which one would get the actual critical analysis arguments?
I always laugh a bit when people do talk using 'shortcuts' or 'typing quickly' as a means of legitimate grammar.
Heh.
Yeah, I'll admit, my attention goes more towards things I can actually read.
The 'shortcut' speak takes longer for me to read, really, as opposed to proper grammar and punctuation.
I learned good grammer by watching english movies and learned the language itself from watching english channels as it isn't my mother tongue.
SK's Grammar is very decent for the most part, but you shout see some of the "suggestions" from the suggestion forums. they are kinda like this:
i nuw, dis gam haz rely god grammr.
Do note people who bother reading the forums posts will most likely be more fluent in English.
I once went to a game help forum and one of the rules was to use proper language. Actually I thought most forums had that rule.
@ Dragneel-Wiki
You should feel good about your posts. I never would have guessed you are a non-English speaker. You do better than some who only speak English.
Good grammar gives your posts strength and expounds on their meaning.
An excess of bad grammar hints at immaturity, rushing or not.
Supar fun to tlk liek dissss though.
Personally I find bad grammar is fun when you're making a joke. And, so, I take all posts that use bad grammar as jokes, depending on when they are used.
Guess what I think you are if your entire post is bad grammar? :3c
@Heavy-Dragon I couldn't agree with you more. Bad grammar can be appropriate at times (for certain jokes) but many people simply don't take the time to check over their posts properly.
Grammar has always been something that I try to use correctly; you have no idea how long I spend structuring and thoroughly proofreading my posts. There are some people that aren't native English speakers and as long as they make an effort, all is well - we can usually understand what they are trying to say quite easily. After all, what more can you ask of a person than to try their best?
The grammar that I have seen here is better than most places, which probably comes down to age. People over the age of 13 are more likely to be grammatically correct, although there are obviously some exceptions.
I don't think anyone has brought anything different to the table from subsets of, "We have more at stake, clearly." It is evident that we want our posts to be read, and (someone may have mentioned this, but I haven't seen it yet) our forum identities are linked to actual knights. We therefore want to put on the best show we have for ourselves, since we have more at stake.
That we have many people for whom English is not the mother tongue helps, as such people generally learn proper English before slang and Internet English.
Apart from this, there's only the fact that the forums do not have that many frequent posters (in comparison to some other ones) and is thus well-kept by the GMs.
Striking observation. I suppose most of the forums I've come across were academic in nature anyway, so I didn't realize that our grammar was particularly good.
@Acid-Snow
Try a few different game's forums~ You'll be surprised haha :)
@Heavy-Dragon
Yeah, bad grammar could be used as a joke to show how other players talk and such. I've seen that happen quite a bit, I did it on the OP without realizing it.
Bad grammar on the forums is not such a decent thing but if you find that a problem then you should see my stepsister's grammar. She says words incorrectly and uses incorrect grammar a lot. I correct her and then she says "So!? I can say it how I want!" so she's pretty much made up her own style of English.
Maybe because most people who bother to post in forums are somewhat educated and know how to differentiate words like 'your, you're' and 'they're, their, there'.
Since SK has a descent community we do need spelling skills, right punctuation and also correct capitalisation of letters at the beginning of a sentence. :P
Wherefore let us teach those grammar noobs some grammar. :D
HAIL SPELLCHECK
Wait, which forums have bad grammar? I'm on three, and most people have good grammar.
Those with bad grammar get treated badly. I had horrible grammar before with lots of mistakes. Now, education continues and I have improved my grammar. I can even type fast.
Well i hate it when people don't even acknowledge that they have bad grammar. There are some people who don't speak English as a native language, and sometimes they acknowledge that fact. But there are also some who are just hurp derp and whines about, coupled by the fact that they don't actually have good grammar. You know who.
In my experience, many people on forums are just plain lazy. You can't even use the "don't have time" excuse like in realtime video games.
Incidentally, all of my browsers have spellcheck. It's not perfect, but I notice the big red underline when I spell something wrong (granted, I'm quite aware this thread is about grammar and not spelling but they often go hand-in-hand, and many people are still too lazy to even attempt to make their typing look competent.)
It's not so much an issue of "I'm not good at English" as it is "I refuse to learn from my mistakes". I have no qualms with foreigners as long as they're actually TRYING.
Also there's a lot of kids. Stupid kids.
By the way "It's not an essay so it doesn't matter" is a STUPID, STUPID argument.
Incidentally, I don't always bother with capitalization or punctuation if I'm in a hurry or it's in-game (similar to comic strips, I don't feel a period is as important when you can see it's the end of the sentence and not a run-on), but too many people don't learn their homophones.
(Also you can't remove Larry because he never existed here in the first place)
India forgets to capitalize his title. So not everyone has good grammar here.
no i tihnk ur rong an every1 has bd gramer but mee becus i hav gud gramer
We have better grammar than most here, mostly because it's a skill one picks up when holding a whisper-sation while soloing Rocket Twins. XP
In the game though, I've seen people "tipe leik dish bbcuzz we 1337 dan u nub5h5 in turms o' taipeng." Not only was that cancerous to read, but it was horrifying to see how fast those kinds of words were going out. I mean they were flying out the guy's mouth at like 70 WPM. It's not even funny.
I don't treat people by selfishness, nice things, etc... I treat them base on grammar and respect. I don't care if you have bad gear.
Who wants to hear the madness of wall of text? It also involves bad grammar.
ok ooo plz lower down ce prices dey kil in meeee liek cray plzzz also ban juanecs benigythz ads lugwuis cuz dey r idots and f****** plzzzzzzzzz or evey budy puy mu 1000 ecec cuz im da cretur off spral nights
I only type badly like this when i am typing in a really big hurry, and even then i usually go back and correct them later whan i have mroe time because i don't have to post right now. theres no reason to use bad grammar or have lots of spelling mistakes because it''s not that important that you have your opinion out there right now.
(everything before this sentence was written without looking at the screen or stopping.)
i aftiallu loge spitya; klmohkus neaides iys the onlu plavr yjay i can use to train my engaluisjh
(everything before this sentence was written without looking at the screen or stopping. XD)
----I actually love Spiral Knights because it's the only place that I can use to train my English.----
Yeah Knight-Of-India has a bad habit of not capitalizing his names or other words like that and people who don't have English as an original language speak better English then those who have it as an original language or atleast thats what i have experienced.(English is not my original language it Urdu)
And lets see if anyone tell the difference between "whose" and "who's"?
Ok?
Examples:
Whose = Whose sock is on the floor?
Who's = Who's going to go get the mail?
Well wasn't really expecting that as an answer but good try.
The difference, one has an apostrophe and one has an "e".
Apostrophe and "e" are not the same thing.
The grammar on forums here is... variable, to say the least. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that some people can't really be bothered all that much about it. And some people aren't using browsers with spell-checking options, as horrific as that might sound. Not everyone bothers to switch away from IExplore.
Us? Good grammr? Wat. We Good grammar? WUT CHU TALKIN' ABOUT BRO.
Lol, I had to retype that^ a couple of times because of autocorrect...Now I'm starting to question if I really do have good grammar, or if it's just because I have autocorrect.. ^^'
All knights are required to learn proper grammar before gaining entrance to Haven...
@Corefinder
Do you play on some tablet? I never knew Autocorrect could be on a comp.
Now ket me try ryping without lookinf. This is din too do1
I think I broke my bold print... what's the correct code for (strong)?
