Trojans..?

I understand they are corrupted knights.

What I do not understand, though, is what their glowing crystals have to do with their vitality (or what the crystals actually are).

Why do breaking these crystals kill them? Are they incomplete in this stage (which is why gold trojans lack them)? Are these crystals some kind of mineral?

A crazy theory is that there's some trojan king (the swarm?) somewhere. The crystals are a safeguard to dispose of those that try to rebel. The most loyals get the golden armor.

trojan are robotised statues

trojan are robotised statues with shadow cristals powering them an they are too big to cover so the safest spot to hide the energy cristal is in the back

My theory

I think the crystal is a shard of dark matter that was shoved inside him and gradually corrupted him until he became completely infested. Even a small amount can corrupt; look what happened to Biscotti's cakes. Imagine what an entire crystal could do in contact with a knight's bloodstream.
