So I know the bars are unreliable so I was wondering about the stone tortoise shield vs the wise owlite. It LOOKS like they have similar normal defense, with owlite having slightly less; however, owlite also has elemental and fire/shock resist. So basically.... is the extra normal/health worth it?

Stone Tortoise can tank

Stone Tortoise can tank damage well, and is easy to get, having no prerequisites.

It feels as though the Grey Owlite Shield is weaker than the Stone Tortoise Shield when taking Normal hits, but the former has the Elemental defense, resistances and whatnot.

I say either series is fine and worth it.

In my opinion, additional

In my opinion, additional fire and shock resist heavily outweigh the very minor amount of extra health on the Omega Shell.

Shell takes non-elemental

Shell takes non-elemental hits slightly better. Owlite is generally the more popular one do to the rampant Normal/Elemental damage in Firestorm citadel and other places.

Haven't used the Owlite

Haven't used the Owlite series yet, but it sounds like if you're venturing into T3, Owlite >> Tortoise. In T2, especially Jelly runs, Stone Tortoise shines as there are few status effects and it can take normal damage hits like nobody's business. But in T3, when things start throwing pure elemental (especially gun puppies), the lack of defense and status resist hurts (elemental damage will also wear down your shield very fast since it has no bonus defense against it).

Another thought to consider

Another thought to consider is that it'll be more expensive to get a good UV on the shell line since it starts at 4* and is that much more expensive to craft in bulk. Partially counteracted by having a much cheaper upgrade path though.

What to get

I think you should get the stone tortoise to since the recipe in the hall of hero's is only 10,000 crowns

Derp. LOL

i thought this thread was something like Dracula vs King Kong, who would win?
actually, who would win between a huge steel owl vs a gigantic stone made tortoise?

The owl, because turtles can't fly and metal can pierce through stone.

Research.

I recently did some tests with the Stone Tortoise. It seems to have much more health than the display suggests. Even though it's a 4* shield, it can resist things just as well as some 5* shields. I used it in FSC, and it had the following properties:

*It broke on spikes in the same number of hits as an Aegis.
*It broke against Shadow Fire in the same number of hits as the Crest of Almire.
*It can withstand 3 zombie strikes in succession (admittedly inferior to the CoA's 5)
*It can withstand Vanaduke's charge (but not his mace).

Most shields display 9 bars of health. The Stone Tortoise displays up to 10; this would be a 9% increase in health over other shields. The Aegis has 8.5 bars normal defense, while an unleveled Stone Tortoise (which I was testing at the time) has 6.5 bars normal defense, which is a significant difference. In the Advanced Training Hall (normal damage only), it resisted spikes just as well as Aegis. This cannot be explained by 9% greater health. It must have considerably more health than the game displays. It appears to have enough health to fully compensate for the lack of specialized defense, if not statuses.
