Sounds funny, especially because OOO promotes the wiki itself, but sadly, it is updated by the community.
Sound great? Hah, no. It is terribly biased, and will influence you towards a certain playstyle which can cause you to dislike the game and quit (should you not like that playstyle).
Not to mention many claims are made that have absolutely no support behind them, typically in sections that the players feel are not worthy of tests and deserve weak, meaningless observations rather than factual information.
"So what. The players can edit it. Don't like it? Change it."
Hah! Right. Don't like my change? Revert it.
To sum this up: a wiki controlled by the community will usually be biased. Without control by OOO, you will end up being misinformed and, in rare cases, mislead.
My suggestion to new recruits: take advice from players on the forums by posting questions on the forums until changes to the wiki are made - don't worry, the minority cannot be held back from assisting you by posting on the forums. We will see the biased information posted, quote the people saying it, then refute what they say in order to assist you :)
Your view is that the wiki is biased, but forum postings are not? This makes no sense to me.
All of your criticisms of the wiki apply even more strongly to the forums. On the forums, claims are often made and advice given without supporting evidence. On the forums, there is a strong "group think" that steers newbies toward certain loadouts. Three Rings doesn't control the quality of forum posts any more than it controls the quality of the wiki. Furthermore, forum posts are often rebutted 20 posts later. Threads are abandoned. A newbie might find a discussion of (say) Argent Peacemaker being bad because of "split damage", and not realize that the information is out of date.
The wiki isn't perfect, but at least there's the possibility of revising according to consensus. Now, there is a problem on some wikis of "wiki bullies" who revert good edits made by users who are trying to fix things. On Wikipedia, a novice editor will sometimes get discouraged because administrators enforce Wikipedia policies, that are crucial to how Wikipedia functions, but that the novice doesn't understand. The Spiral Knights wiki doesn't have much policy, so that's not much of an issue for us. If you feel that you've been treated unfairly on the wiki, then comment on the article's talk page, or even start a thread in the Wiki Editors forum about it.
