Technically, you can beat the game without them.
But they make your life easier and open up more options to customize your playstyle.

In my opinion, get 5* trinket first from krogmo rewards (you can just buy mod calibrator/enamorock at AH), then get trinket slots. Offensive trinkets helps a lot if you don't have good uv at your weapons. Heart pendant for lockdown, most likely. You don't really need heart pendant at clockworks. The only time that I feel the need of weapon slots are serious business lockdown and shadow lair. I feel that 2 weapon choice is more than enough at general clockworks.

Once you try doubled maxed stats without negative penalties worth caring about made easily available trough trinkets, it's hard to go back.

weapon slot:
3 is nice 4 is optional.4 usually for heating easily,but can give advantage also.
trinket slot
Mostly if you want more advantage like if you gunner or swordsmen and
the bomb charge is slow get the charge module things like that.Heart trinket in PvE if you not confident(or alternatively for being Mr.reviver).
Weapon slots are worth getting. I do however find that one extra weapon slot is often sufficient.
As for trinkets, if you have the trinkets, it's worth to unlock them very much. Best trinkets are probably damage increase ones, but all Elite * Modules are great. Tetra and Penta-Heart Pendants are nice too. There are a few cases where extra resistance vs statuses is useful, such as in Compund 42. Damage type defence trinkets are pretty useless in my opinion.
