What if... you could get a curious mewkat by finding an actual mewkat and then ending a level with it on the elevator?
Or perhaps add to the challenge a bit. Make it so that you have to have it stunned and on the elevator? Something like that.

Yeah, that'd work.
That'd be great in fact, like maybe a thousand token item that you would equip as a weapon? It'd basically be a crappy stun gun that enables you to capture mewkats. Like, you'd use it and they'd turn into a monster box that you could move around... taking it to the next level would give it to you.
