Fiends......need some adivces or approaches to them

Now i have been playing Spiral Knights a bit to know some of the simple mechanics like blocking/shield bumping, Lancer (attacking and follow it with shield), and ect. I usually solo the story missions up until i hit to the closing point of Vana. The one monster class that keeps giving me a headache is fiends.....you know the fireflies, devilites, and the Heal flies. Let me start on how much trouble these things give me on some runs

Devilites:

-one or two i can handle, but put a horde of them concentrating fire on me with no leg room is no fun......no fun at all.
- their dodging.....as a gunner that literally makes aiming at them a chore (reason i picked up a Flamberg)
- when pit bosses are involved with the devilite horde......that is a recipe of disaster just waiting to happen.
- when you hit to the T3 ones they become a nightmare....even when shielding it doesn't do too much

Fireflies:

- they come at you with full speed. when i first faced them, i reaction was to immediately shield and let them attack and retaliate. this always worked for me until i hit to T3. now when there are more than four i am a goner
- Healers are involved when trying to kite them around.........nuff said
-trying to kill the healer while getting attacked yourself.......still nuff said.

I want to get some adivces for anyone that had this much trouble and overcame the obstacle with ease.

My tips

Devilites :

  • Do not travel in a straight line towards devilites
  • Do keep your shield up if approaching them, however, run in zig zags when further away.
  • Attack them as soon as they finished their attacks
  • Take the attacking ones down first, before attempting the bosses and yesmen

Greavers :

  • Do not stay within the area of their attack
  • Do try to hit them when they approach you, with swords preferably. This interrupts their attack.
  • Take them down one by one

General Advice :
Bring a good piercing sword such as flourish. Blitz is recommended for gunners.
Do not use the charge attack of flourish
Do use the charge attack of Blitz needle.

The slightest poke interrupts their attack. They are fast but you can be faster.

easier with swords

Dragsnov, which gun are you using? Callahan and Blitz Needle are the obvious choices. I hate to say it, but spamming Polaris works pretty well too. Some fiends (particularly greavers) tend to be easier with swords, as Zaffy-Laffy says. So if you continue to have trouble with guns, then give piercing swords (particularly Final Flourish or Barbarous Thorn Blade) a try. Now, for the four kinds of fiend:

Devilites: If you can, stay far enough away from the crowd that only one fiend is aggro'ed on you at a time. As Zaffy-Laffy says, try to approach in a zig-zag pattern. Again use just single strokes with your piercing sword, shielding after each stroke, to keep them interrupted.

Greavers: Try to spawn them, and then retreat to a hallway, so that they all attack you from the same direction. Using your piercing sword, make a single swing and shield. You can interrupt them until they die. They are easier than devilites, in my opinion.

Trojans: Wait for them to charge, and then hit them in the back. Not hard, really.

Silkwings: Easy, of course. I like snipering these in crowds with a Callahan sometimes.

Blitz Vs Pepperbox

thank you for giving me feedback on the fiends. they are great and i am trying to solo some stages once again. one thing that got my attention was using the blitz needle. Firstly i do want to say to Bopp and Zaffy thanks for some tips. The Callahan is really great since i am using one, but in order for it to be effective, i had to do the lancer (shoot and follow with shield) in order to heighten the DPS of that slow gun. Like I said, so many of them will eat my shield up, but i got this feeling that i am not suppose to let greavers (thank you for telling me their name. Keep calling them flies.) touch my shield at all.

It seems like that separating a horde is a great stragety, but i am wondering if you have a close quarter situation (for example arenas).

alright now the main reason for this post. It looks like that i need to buy a brand new gun, but i dont know which to buy. I am trying to weigh their pros. here's what i got out of my head.

Blitz Needle:
- raw Peirce damage is always welcome
- if positions correctly, outbursts and outdamages the Callahan
- For flavor preference, it just sounds cool.

Volcanic Pepperbox:
- it does normal damage, so that means i can use it in a nonfiend situation (except missions that has something to do with oilers..)
- It has a chance to do the fire affliction. In teir 3, fire is the worst DoT in the game. can't be stopped unless you use a remedy or high Fire resistant armor.
- I usually like status over power in some weapons.

now i do got a question about the pepperbox. How often does the fire affliction happen? If it happens often enough, I will take it, but i got limited resource to build only one of these choices. If it doesn't, then i will switch to blitz for that raw power.

Like I said, Thank you for the feedback. I think i want to solo the Gauntlet once again. After that, I have the vana unlocked. YAY.

P.S. to Bopp: If it isn't PVP, Using something broken is ok. although i never played Lockdown yet, it doesn't mean that i read the forums about the rants of the players.

If you don't have a Blitz, do take it, it is awfully useful in KoA mission too.

Blitz goes from 180 to 280 damage per shot for charged attack, and 80-100 for normal shot. Blitz deals 6 shot, for 2 times, as normal attack, and 15 shot for a charge attack. DO however note that there will be a rather long reloading time of the weapon, which you can't move.

The pepperbox is underclassed due to the nature of the attack. The piercing damage from the Blitz is super effective on devilites. The range of the Blitz, though, can swallow devilites in a sea of bullets, therefore devilites can't dodge them.

In close quarters, stick to swords, or mobile guns (such as alchemers or pulsars). Keep moving around, and at a distance away from devilites. Take down devilites one by one, especially attacking ones due to their low health. Try brandish charges, works suitably well.

TL;DR get blitz, you basically killed two snipes with one stone.

Volcanic pepperbox user here.

Volcanic pepperbox user here. The fire does happen decently often, and can be quite helpful. While it may not be the best gun for FSC, its good basically everywhere else that isn't fire themed. Now, it can be used just fine in fire themed environments, you just won't have the advantage of the fire. However, I can honestly say that nothing says "Get out of my face, punk" like the volcanic pepperbox's charge.

As for the blitz, it is a pretty good gun. It is quite good in FSC, and if this is what you go with, you will find yourself most likely using the blitz needle as your go to gun there. As for using it against fiends... it'll work, but will leave you open to thrown office supplies from any devilites or greavers that might still be alive.

So, really, the choice is up to you. I would personally suggest to go ahead with the blitz needle, but keep the volcanic pepperbox in mind for future crafts. While it may not fare as well against enemies that are immune to fire, it will serve you well against pretty much anything else.
