Processing Thoughts of You Always

Snarbolax is not suitable for choice as a first armour. If I were you, I'd go for a different armour first, particularly since running UGWW would be difficult without a decent party, and also expensive (since many players who are experienced don't really have much desire to repeat the Shadow Lair, and may not necessarily want to have to pay to help you out). Skolver would be a good choice with the same damage bonus, although it gets pierce defence instead of shadow, and max freeze instead of split poison and freeze.
The alternative is Vog Cub, which gives elemental defence, fire resist and ASI Med, and is an excellent choice for FSC runs.

worth it to whom?

Shadow Lairs are expensive, but you earn a large quantity of crowns (I don't remember how much) to recoup some of your costs. Also, you don't have to pay the 25,000-crown recipe fee for Snarbolax armor. So running a Shadow Lair and making this armor might not cost as much as you think.

The main reason to run a Shadow Lair is that it's a fun challenge. I almost never craft anything at the end of a Shadow Lair, because I was just there for the fun. Depending on how far into the game you are, this may or may not apply to you.

Do realize that the 25,000 crowns is a bit less than 400 CE, while you need 450 CE to pay 1/4 of a Shadow Key's cost.
