three options, actually

Actually, you have three options:
A. Sell the book.
B. Use the book, beat Margrel, get the cowl, and sell the cowl.
C. Use the book, beat Margrel, get the cowl, and keep it.

To decide rationally, you'd have to know the going prices for the book and the cowl. But keep in mind that there is also value in the act of using the book. The Margrel fight is a fun, novel challenge. People on these forums have offered to pay to be taken along, just for the experience. So you have to figure out what price people would pay. Also keep in mind that prices may rise once the promotion is done and the supply of books and cowls evaporates.

You also have to decide how much the fight and the cowl are worth to you. We can't answer this for you. It depends on things like how much money you already have lying around, and how bored with the rest of the game content you are.

If you're new to the game, then the 2-3 mill that you'd rake in by selling it far outweighs the loss of the item. If you're not, the worth of the hat far outweighs the loss of the 2-3 mill crowns- chances are, you don't even need any new gear, and 2-3 mill isn't that much to you. (not that its not a lot, just that its not more than you can imagine any more)

Or maybe you don't want the hat?

What would you do with two million crowns? That sounds like the kind of thing you'd use to buy the most powerful and unique piece of armour in the game.

Which you just sold. Selling your only book is a bit like selling your car to buy fuel.

You'd want to sell your book to make safer gear, as you can have either-

One risky hat that will get you killed.

or

About 2/5s of the weapons and armors in the game.

If you're not good enough to make cr to fund getting gear when you want it, or would otherwise require some form of defense to make up for the low defensive fire/shock resistances, then its silly to want the hat over the massive amount of year you could attain via selling it.

Maybe...

May be worth it to you to get the cowl and try and put a UV on it.

Nope.

It's like selling an expensive sports car for 5 average cars for your whole family.

Useful.

What I think you meant to say was "Selling your Lamborghini to get the money to buy a Lamborghini."

If you are full 5* pro

If you are full 5* pro player, with loads of different types of gear for everything (or swiming in ce and crowns already) then keep it. If you don't have 5* gear, or not that much, the usefulness of having gear for more places is probably going to outweigh the usefulness of one helm with some cool bonuses, sure, but also neg resists that will make it harder to use. Personally, since I don't always have time to even use all of my mist each day, I'd sell it to fund getting mroe 5* items and keeping up weapon slots. That helmet seems to be more for the uber-players who want something new to work with.

As for when you could sell it, waiting does sound like it would let the price go up further. You'd want to be careful not to wait so long that SK brings the black kats back again, I've heard that they will. That would make the prices drop a lot for it.

what's with these car analogies?

It's more like asking your parents to return everything they got you for christmas, and give you the cash instead so you can buy what you really wanted.
