What does it take to do Jelly King?

I took my first run through the Jelly King stratum today, solo, and I made it to the king himself without any deaths, but I couldn't down the big guy himself (I took two revives and called it a day on my third death). What I want to know is am I doing the fight itself wrong, or do I just not have good enough gear for it?

What I'm currently wearing:

3* Tempered Calibur L10

3* Cryotech Alchemer Mk II L9

3* Dusker Cap L7

3* Dusker Coat L5

3* Horned Owlite Shield (UV Elemental Medium) L5

I'm working towards a Vile Striker, since I've been told Jelly King just loves poison, but those recipes don't seem to like me much. Since it was my first time I was going by the Wiki, and my strategy involved sitting there whacking away, and throwing my vial (poison, then fire, died before I could use my curse) whenever the previous vial's status effect went away. I actually had two health caps remaining, because I found I always got interrupted when trying to use them.

So, where am I going wrong?

Well, soloing him is

Well, soloing him is typically not in your best interest until you've got higher gear and you've beaten him a few times.

He's a jelly so he really doesn't like shadow damage, Gran Fausts are a good thing to take along once you can afford one.

Some good things to remember are not to just run in and attack like mad, you have to watch out for his spin attacks, and not waste time while he's spinning, you can use that opportunity to trap some of his annoying little minions in other sections of the regenerating walls of the arena if you time it right.

The only time I solo'd him, this is what I did.

I used a Faust on him, with shadow damage being his weakness, and the chance to curse can big a big help. Vial selection is pretty key also- I started his level with 3 heal capsules, 3 poison vials, 3 curse vials, and 3 shock vials seems. I tend to throw the vials at point blank range, to ensure I don't miss. Shock spreads to the mobs around him so it hurts everyone and slows them up a little. I saved the Curse vials for once his starts raging more and spinning about the room. Then he's dealing damage to himself while I dodged out of the way. This is also a good time to heal, move out of the mobs and find a quiet corner to pop a capsule without getting interrupted. Lastly, I just used the Poison Vials to keep him poisoned to offset his regeneration. When one vial wears out, I'd hit him with the next. If you can keep the pressure on, he is beatable. But I've beaten him many times with friends before I ever attempted solo'ing him, and that experience will certain help you as well.

You can stack different

You can stack different status effects-- like he can be poisoned, AND on fire, AND cursed all at the same time. Solo is a little harder because the more time you take to chuck vials, the less time you're actively hitting him. Keep in mind that some vials last longer than others-- so don't throw poison first. It lasts the least amount of time. Throw Curse, then Shock/Stun/Fire (whichever you choose), and then poison last.

You want to be in his face meleeing him, but unlike in group play where you can just go crazy, you have to be mindful of the swarm of little jellies. You want to lay into him as much as possible, but at the same time you want to avoid damage when you can. Shield Bump enemies in the middle of combos (Personally, I stop one attack short of a "finisher", making shielding instant), and that should offset some of the damage you end up taking.

When you use vials is more important, as well. Curse is great in the first phase, but is far more important in the second-- so if you start the Jelly King with only 1 vial, save it for the second. This is because he heals more health per tick in second phase, and it's harder to be having constant DPS on him-- so the extra chunk Curse gives sets you that much further ahead. Fire is a better pick for first phase, because he won't go immune to damage, meaning every tick counts. Stun and shock are useful in either phase (I like using them in second phase personally-- since it makes him choke up on his spin), and so is poison-- but if you're solo you need to be choosy about which vials you bring.

When he hits the second phase (marked by him going pink, and spinning all the way around the room), make some space between you, and him. Use that time to kite a little and pop a pill in order to fill your health up, and then start a charge attack with your main melee weapon. Remember: Jelly King ALWAYS spins in a COUNTER CLOCKWISE manner, starting at 3-o'clock. If you don't know what that means, look at a clock. He'll turn pink, then head in the direction of "3" on a clock face, then go through 2, 1, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4. With this knowledge you can predict where his spin ends, meaning where you kind of want to head in order to plant that charge attack right in his face.

Sidetip: Don't wait RIGHT where he's going to finish-- as he may spin into you and cancel your charge attack. Always keep in motion, and head towards the general area-- that way little jellies can't smack you in the face either.

Between "angry spins", there's about a 1-2 second delay, and then the Jelly King will do one attack, delay for another 1-2 seconds, and then "angry spin" again. My "rotation" is to let the charge attack go, and then toss a couple vials. By the time attack buffering on vials is done, he'll have done a regular attack, so I lay a full combo into him, then shield. You have time for one combo between regular attack and arena spin, so putting up your shield means you won't take damage, and he pushes you away (giving you breathing room)

Your equipment is fine,

Your equipment is fine, though it should ideally be level 10. It's actually the same equipment I've been beating him many times with.

If you follow the above post's advice you should do well. You might need to fight him a few times to get a feel for the fight though.

Try to save your vials/capsules for the king if you can. I usually end up getting there with 3 health/3 fire/3 poison, with curse varying the most. I usually only need to use one or two of each, but having extra allows for some mistakes like missing with a vial.

For starting the fight, break the boxes in front of his spawn point as he doesn't always break them himself. Then charge up an attack and hit the switch. This way you can start with a good 3 hits with your charge.

As you get better at dealing with him, you should be able to get him to his second phase before you even have to heal.

Bomb sparingly

No bombs are particularly good on jelly king runs. You'll almost never have a chance to charge because he spawns so many minions. If you really love bombs, I recommend using them sparingly (set the place on fire while he spins, for instance) or being the support character in a party of 4.

I have been a bomber just for support on a jelly run and in a party of 4 that seemed useful. I used a master blast bomb to essentially shield my teammates by blowing the smaller jellies away from them. I also like to drop a fiery atomizer in the middle of the room before I jump on the party button so that first wave of cubes burns, but after that I generally stick to my sword and vials.

Nightblade / Silent

Nightblade / Silent Nightblade / Acheron line of weapons will kill the jelly king really fast... much faster than Gran Faust imo. But Gran Faust has it's advantages against groups of enemies. For vial use you can just run up to him and use them in melee range to ensure hits... but try not to use vials after he has turned purple for 4-5s because he'll most likely turn pink and be invuln by the time the vial hits. When he spins and turns pink try to stay in front of the direction that he's spinning towards, that way when he turns purple again you can run up to him and deal dmg without being swarmed by the smaller jellies.

Communication is also key... make sure everyone in your party understands that attacking the JK and ignoring the smaller jellies is the attack plan.

As far as Bombs go, you might

As far as Bombs go, you might want to only use a Bomb if you're in a group so that all the ''heat'' of battle isn't focused on you solely. If you have too many enemies coming after you you have a higher risk of not being able to even properly charge your Bomb, or maybe not even set it where you want it.

As far as a good Bomb type to use in a scenario like Royal Palace/King, it would be Ice in my own opinion. Ice Bombs can be -very- helpful in keeping the minions in place at least.

We had an Ice Bomb user in our party the other day and we went through all the Palace levels + King very easily because the maps don't have much room to kite which would be a bad thing normally, but with a large Ice Bomb blast radius it means the tables turn from being, ''Oh no, I don't have much room to run in!'' to, ''The monsters don't have much room to dodge my Ice!'' They get frozen and everyone picks them off without incident.

It's good stuff.

Burn and Boom

In the palace, but not the Royal Jelly fight itself, there is no question that fire is the best bomb, and the blast bomb series is always useful especially if you learn how to place it to knock the enemy back to specific spot. I use a Master Blast Bomb (UV +med dmg to slime) while my mate uses a fiery atomizer. She sets the room on fire and I knock and stragglers back into the flames. I call this the "burn and boom." It's a quick way to dispatch of slime.

Ice bombs are less effective in the royal jelly palace. There are a lot of smaller rooms with a lot of jelly cubes in them. Freezing the jellies in place doesn't stop them from attacking you, so can still get hurt waiting for them to thaw. Ice can work, but it's slow and requires patience that most people lack. Fire ticks, on the other hand, kill them very quickly.

interesting.

Well, the thing abuot a RJ run, is that poison is what u need. as long as he is poisoned, he is easy enough. cursing during phase 2 (spin spin spin spin in a counterclockwise) will do decent damage, but poison is really what you want to go for. if you brought team mates, it could take as long as 15 seconds. for example, i tried a RJ run, and my laptop lagged so much i couldnt really do anything.

It didnt matter, my teammates destroyed the royal jelly so quickly by the time my laptop stopped lagging, they had already collected the jelly gems and minerals and were waiting at the lift.

see, a team works wonders.

a vile striker does work well, but a faust isnt as good without one.
