I'd like to hear your opinions / advice regarding the Owlite Shield vs. Dragon Scale shield.

Both Owl shield and Dragon Scale shield has Fire resist and Elemental defense.

5* Owl shield has Normal + Elemental def and Fire + Shock resist.
Dragon Scale shield (5*) has Piercing + Elemental def and Fire + Poison resist.

Would it be a bad idea if I chose Dragon Scale shield instead of the Owlite one?
(I use swords and I'm planning on getting Skolver coat/Divine veil gear, if that's a relevant info)

And another quick question:
As a sword user, do you think I should get the "Snarby" shield?
Sure it has the sword dmg bonus. But it doesn't have Fire resist and Elemental def, and me not being exactly an expert at dodging monsters' attacks...

yes

The problem is that you almost always want normal defense, and Dragon Scale has none. I don't have one, but from what I've seen it pretty much gets ripped up by monster attacks almost everywhere. (It's great in Compound 42 though.)

Yes, Barbarous Thorn Shield is a great offense-oriented shield for sworders, due to the damage bonus. More defense-oriented shields would be Grey Owlite, Crest of Almire, Dread Skelly, etc. For more detail, try the armor section of my sword guide.

It would be a terrible idea

BTS is always a worthwhile choice if you use swords on a regular basis; despite its lack of elemental and fire, it will generally hold up better than the Dragon Scale in most scenarios, due to Dragon's lack of normal defence, and since most things do normal damage... GOwlite is almost always a better option than Dragon Scale, the only exception being if you're running C42 Danger Missions.

As a sword user, you should avoid dragon scale. Melee attacks always deal at least partial normal.

Oh...

Oh whoop-de-fraggin'-doo, looks like I'm stuck with the Owl-like monstrosity...

Well, thanks for your answers :)

Whats this about normal type

Whats this about normal type damage? Almost NOTHING in tier 3 deals normal damage, from what I was told. I don't see how it's really an issue.

@Batabii

It goes like this:

-In T1, everything deals just normal damage.
-In T2, everything deals split normal/specialised.
-In T3, it works a bit like our weapons do.

What do I mean by that? Have a look at a brandish upgrade, for instance. Glacius deals a 50/50 split of normal and elemental damage. When a wolver bites you, it deals some normal damage, some piercing. You'll notice that when it happens, some red bars spout up from you and some yellow ones do. Those show how much normal and how much piercing damage you took.

Projectiles and bombs are 100% specialised. Again, look at guns and bombs. Cryotech Alchemer does a load of elemental damage and nothing else. When a polyp shoot you, it does only piercing damage. Don't believe me? Try for yourself! Just go block a zombie attack with Volcanic Plate and Dragon Scale, see which one lasts longer. For the giggles, also try blocking with Swiftstrike Buckler and take note of how Dragon Scale didn't last any longer.

Almost EVERYTHING in tier 3 deals normal damage, just not 100%. Here are sources of normal:
-EVERY melee attack. Zombies, kats, wolvers, jelly cubes, lichens, overtime devilites, retrodes, mecha knights, lumbers and probably a bunch more.
-Gremlin thwackers and Trojans among possibly others do pure normal damage.
-Wheels in FSC, probably a bunch of other stuff.
-I suspect puppy rockets to do at least part normal, as well. Volcanic Plate tanks them like nothing.

is this a troll?

Batabii, trojans, slag guards, and Vanaduke all deal tons of normal damage. And they're not the only sources, as Zeddy has explained.
