Arena (So to speak), it will need a new name...

So many years ago I played an MMORPG where there was an arena, not like we have now, and maybe they will want to implement something like this in the future.

In the arena (and I forgot the games name since it has since closed down, the devs there sucked, and they lost their creative edge), there were 10 waves of 8 creatures. Each wave got harder, and had different objectives. Wave 4 for example was protect a crystal in the middle of the arena, we could protect the ele for example. Another was kill X creatures in 2 minutes (obviously this had more than 8), the last round was a boss, that could only be found in the "arena".

The payout was only if you beat the boss at the end, and it paid out in boxes. Each box contained something, sometimes another entry into the arena, sometimes a rare mat/item. Others just had random junk (we could use 2* mats as our junk).

If you were unable to complete the arena, you didn't get a prize, and you had to buy entry tickets (just like we do SL keys). Parties of 8 welcome at a time, if you did it with less then you did, there was no bonus for it, except showing off lol. The other cool thing about this, others could come and watch as you and your team battled through it. Only 1 team could run it at a time (yes it kinda sucked waiting around and hoping they didn't run it 10 times in a row, so this could be changed).

What are your thoughts on this? Is this something you can see being implemented in SK? I think it could, and I think it could be a huge hit.

Nick, or any devs chiming in would be awesome if the idea is a good one.

I don't really have any opinion on this, but I just thought it was funny that you said:

"it has since closed down, the devs there sucked, and they lost their creative edge"

And are suggesting something from said game.

Kinda gives a pessimistic perception around the suggestion...

I agree with what you are saying

It does sound pessimistic and kinda puts a bad taste in the mouth so to speak, however the difference was, said game was around 5+ yrs, and the arena itself was around for a long time before it closed.

They ran out of content, the opened the "core" if you will and left nothing else except maybe 1 more expansion to go (and their devs said that expansion wasn't going to happen, they had plans for it, but decided it wasn't worth the time).

So while yes you are correct, the circumstances between the 2 games are very different.

We want new content, we all love boxes (make them bound or not lol), this is a great way to do it. This won't harm the game, they can use their old monsters like the black kats, the new gremlins from OCH, etc etc.

Hope I have explained what I meant a bit more. We haven't opened the core, and odds are won't till we have another story to run with, thats where this game is much different than the other.

Wow, they did suck. I know games that have been half-dead for years, and the Devs are working on them as a side-job voluntarily (It doesn't make enough money for them to get paid) with their own company just because they don't want players disappointed.

My only direct concern I'll say to this is if it's too loot-heavy or crown output-heavy it'll be the new farm level where everyone goes. Arena's were already one of the top culprits of that (Before KoA was so farmable) and they only have 3 stages.

This had no payout except for the boxes

To ease your concern, this had no $$ payouts. It was strictly, beat the boss and win, or lose it all. Double or nothing if you will (with doubling being sometimes the worst mats/items in the game lol).

Yes the devs there weren't very good near the end. They admitted it was the end on the last update release, and told us all flat out they could do 1 more, but its the end anyway, why bother. This game, these devs, I do not see that happening anytime soon. These devs have brains, they have creativity, they have a story, and they love what they do (and as you mentioned pay, these get paid, who knows about the others).

I hope these devs do something like I am talking about, I can see it being a great crown sink/ce sink (and if its done right, a lot better than SL is, where you get all the armors and have no reason to keep doing it anymore). This can be something that is done over and over again, yes, its like grinding, but the payouts can be worth it in the end (unlike FSC woot more tokens and 10k in CR!). We can have new weapons (something SL lacks), new armors, new costumes (like from the Krog coins, the bomber masks) etc etc. There are 100s of items let alone a 1000 mats that can go into these boxes at the end.

I am a box person I love opening things, others like selling them knowing they can make a profit, others like rare items and collect them. I think this would appeal to everyone's tastes. I would open 1/2 and sell 1/2 (to pay for another run). Others will sell them all to make a profit, and yet others would open them all in the hopes of getting the big payouts (rare weapons/armors/etc).

Is my logic flawed?

I wasn't sure if they had CR payouts...but since they don't, I think this would be pretty cool. In fact, it could even be a preventive crown sink. Not just buying the "tickets" to enter our little circle of slaughter, but since presumably 8 players would be doing a rather long fight with no direct crown payout, that's 8 people that could've done KoA runs.

Puts more value in objects and decreases inflation of crowns a little bit.

The last thing I thought of though is, would this be randomly generated? People do KoA over and over and over just because it gives a lot of crowns. People might, or might not, do this over and over for more boxes. To ensure that after a month after its release it doesn't become unused, variance in the arena, whether it's just a little or a lot, would be nice.

I think, given supply & demand, the balance between this and KoA would be a pretty good one. One week too many people may have farmed arena boxes, and so they're cheap now for the people who sell them - so people do KoA. The next week, too many people may have switched to KoA and now boxes are expensive again, so more people do arena.

I see no flaws in it personally, but I'm not a huge critic...I'm sure Luguiru or Oatmonster would have something to say, but I don't.

I like the idea of this long arena that pays out lots once you've finished it. Though I can't see the number of players in a party ever increasing above 4.

I'd like to see more viable farming options, though if this was all on the same depth the entry fee to this depth might have to be ~50ce minimum per person. But why not just have a series of arena depths that cost 10ce as usual but only the last depth gives the big payout? Are you saying the 'tickets' would be bought with ce or cr?

I also like the idea of arenas that have mini-objectives, would definitely spice things sup a bit.

Anyways, I like the idea and other farming options would be great, but it would definitely have to be polished, adjusted and balanced to make sure it fits into Spiral Knights properly.

Yes tickets can be bought with CE and CR because....

It's like an SL key, we can buy it with CE from the supply Depot, or etc, and then flip it in the AH.

The other games arena had nothing different on any run. It was the same spawns, same times, same spots everytime. I agree with ours we can spice it up, change the types a bit, 1 round construct, the next slime, etc etc.

I did consider the many floors of arena as a way to do this, but then I thought there are 1000 parties running it at once, what if we took the idea of only allowing X number parties to run it at once? So that will slow down the amount of farming as well.

I don't see this ever being unused per say, yes people will get bored with it eventually, but lets be honest, we will with anything lol. However I see this as a problem solver for many issues we have in the game, and I for one would keep running it till I got all the rare weapons it has, armors, and costumes. Since I'm a collector (as many of you are as well =) )
