Why are there profile picture requests anyway?

I don't understand why people new to the forums want this so bad.

Diversity, expressing, & easy recognition.

Well... you see, there is this thing called individuality, and people typically go for it until the cost of doing so jeopardizes their chance of winning. Unless they're a bad***, in which case they jeopardize everyone else' chances of winning.

Oh, and: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/-ly

BADLY.

As in: "Before you came into my life, I missed you so badly."

Not: "Before you came into my life, I missed you so BAD.

Pictures are pretty...

Well, there is also this, eh, "trend" of labeling people without profile pictures as "noobs".
As ridiculous as it might sound, it's often true (judging from various internet forums and discussions).

Yes! Yukariyakumo agrees it is silly.

It's not a trend, it's a stereotype. And stereotypes, although unreliable and judgemental, are frequently true.

If someone were to tell me that they didn't read my post because I don't have a picture, it would say more about them than me.

"noob or not, it suggests laziness..." - Larry

Tut tut tut... I would never have thought you would make such a ridiculous claim, Larry. Really, I am disappointed. Want to know how much it suggests? Nothing! Zilch! Zip!
Funny, isn't it? Oh also- I will judge you on your post, Larry, and say that you probably didn't think your post through, and I will be looking for this more closely in the future.

On a more serious note.
Everyone uses pictures. More specifically; pre-defined pictures. I can see why this would be preferred over having to ban people because of their profile picture, but if I were to have a picture, I'd like to decide it myself thank-you-very-much (though pictureless works too, quite happy with that, actually).

Anyhow.

1. I've been posting without a picture for a while now, and I found that posting without a picture is a form of diversity, seeing as more people post with than without.

2. It is easier to look for a post without a picture while scrolling down (in my opinion). I guess this is sort of related to the above statement.

3. Posts without pictures can get smaller.
Take Larrys one-sentence post as an example. It would have been slimmer hadn't it been for his picture stretching it. Harienders post uses two lines of text but still has a slimmer post than Larry. Now, you might argue that the extra space creates some air between the posts, but I think there's enough air already (all down to what you like really, I prefer minimalistic).

4. Conversation is over here anyway, and judging based on picture / no picture and not content really is beyond bloody stupid I'd say...

Because the profile picture

Because the profile picture that I have fits me o so lovingly purrrrrrfect! It's sassy, mysterious, DOODLE-ISH; I love the Cobalt line. Cobalt players look like player that I can put my trust in (even though it is highly the opposite). The Cobalt Armor line resembles a strong, confident knight who is a good leader in parties. Basically, Cobalt line defines LEADERSHIP!

BADLY.

As in: "Before you came into my life, I missed you so badly."

Not: "Before you came into my life, I missed you so BAD.

But, and this is a big "but"...

This is NOT done with the verbs "to feel", "to taste", "to smell", or "to sound".

"I feel sick."
"This tastes sweet."
"The garlic smells strong."
"That sounds so bad."

I'm sure there are more exceptions but they escape me at the moment.
