Rate the Monster difficulty!

Introduction:

This topic is not a suggestion or any of that sort. I am just curious to see how the very small % of the Spiral Knights Community rates the difficulty of the monsters in this game. I hope I do not receive 1 word answers such as Easy or Hard (I do believe since I said this I will get trolled now lol). What I am looking to learn from this post is just the viewpoint of players in this game about the monsters.

So how will we rate them?:

Simple I created a list of each class, and in each class I listed the additional monster families all you need to do is rate the overall class, and each specific class using this scale:

Scale for overal Monster Classes:

1. I find this monster family to be very easy I never die to them even if I have full proto on.
2. I find this monster family to be average I can handle them, but I do die to them at times.
3. This monster class causes me a lot of issues I usually tend to die to them a lot.

Scale for individual monsters:

1. This monster is nothing he gets on his knees and begs for mercy when he sees me.
2. This monster looks tough, but with the right gear I can handle him easily.
3. This monster gives me a bit of trouble he tends to kill me time after time.
4. When I see this monster I try to avoid him/her since well he kills me =(

Feel Free to give your overall perspective of the monsters as a whole when you are done rating the monsters. This is not a thread about buffing or nerfing any monsters. I am just seeking your opinion on the monsters in this game.

*Let us hope we can have a civilized conversation on the Spiral Knights forums*

*Keep in mind multiple accounts on the Sk forums are against TOS, and 1 entry per knight =0*

personal note: i'm gonna admit i occasionally die against the alpha wolvers when i don't pay attention while bringing gear i wanna lvl :x

personal note: again like the alpha wolvers, if i don't pay attention i can get killed by lumbers...also Silversap (ice lumbers) are particularly potent i feel because if i get iced and they break my shield the first hit....I'm a sitting duck if they decide to attack me again :x

personal note: I think fiends just hurt a lot even when all my gear is shadow resist....i tend to think as long as the difficult fiends (greavesr, devilites, overtimers) are separated or spread out, they are manageable. However, when i'm faced with a whole group it gets exponentially harder :/

personal note: reason why undead have an unfair advantage is because of the gremlin kat that appears with them in the candlestick depths 8( gremlin kat: easy to avoid but if cornered...is annoying

I think most of this is kinda depends on the situation though...like my answers were based on the spawn in a normal clockworks depth...not danger mission or shadow lairs scenarios. The large group spawns, waves and combination of 2 types of damage and/or status makes the monster's potency increase dramatically

I. Chroma's -Rating - C, for cutest of all monsters, especially sideways jumping, awe
II. Wolvers - Rating - A, for awe-dorable yelps as you kill them
IIa. Alpha Wolvers - G, for grr.. alpha wolvers breaking shields

Construct Family (Overall):
I. Gun Puppy - P for please don't spawn in a danger room I just paid for, please, 500 of you are crazy
Ia. Rocket Puppy - R, for run for cover, he's going to get you
II. Lumbers - T, for silly trees that are vulnerable from behind
III. Mecha Knights - F for friend or foe, pretty useless
IV. Retrode - L for laser beam of death, duck for cover
V. Scuttlebot - S, for scurrying around and being all adorable

WHERE IS THE LOVE PUPPY??!!??? - W, for why do I have to kill you, poor puppy

Optimizing isn't boring...yet

I think that this monster list is relative to each tier as well as the gear used, but still generally (speaking of t3 only). This list is also not including themes, which are very important. T3 fiends are easy, t3 fiends shock themed…sometimes tricky. I also am listing the weapon which eliminates the specific enemy (if it is very effective, and reason it is a 1 basically).

Beast Family - 1 (BTB / DBB)
Chroma - 1
Wolvers - 1
Alpha Wolvers - 1

Construct Family - 2 (DA / trollaris)
Gun Puppy - 1
Rocket Puppy - 2
Lumbers - 1
Mecha Knights - 2 (because they don't flinch when hit)
Retrode - 1

Fiend Family - 2 (BTB / Blitz / Callahan)
Devilites - 1 (2 if shock)

The main reason why I have no issues with these monsters is because I own most of the items in the game at this point, and set based on the level theme/monster/setting type before doing each clockwork mission (same for bosses). Because of this, the only challenge in t1-3 games is due to internet lag (often not caused by me..serverside..).
I personally like how the monsters all are, and I like the added challenge of monster themes/swarms which are added in SL runs. It'd be interesting for OOO to add some more monster to balance out each section. At this point if there's a healer it's either a mender or a butterfly. It'd be neat if there was a unique healer to slimes, wolves, fiends and maybe even undead. Just my opinion.

EDIT: Oh, right. Zombies only....wouldn't that be annoying if Howlitzers could be revived if they blew up near a totem?

Note: They are all too slow. In T3 wolvers can TP, but that doesn't help boost their numbers.

Note: Varies quite a lot. Rocket Pups give me a lot of trouble because of their INSANE damage. Mechas are fine as long as I have my bombs, and Normal Puppies can be hard in large numbers. If I have my rocket hammer, then many of the enemies rated 1 are non-exsistant in my view.

Note: Devilites are annoying...they need to lay off the overtime, the coffee, and the stress. :( Greavers are fine as long as I have my DVS. Same with Trojans. Silkwings...poison FTW!

Note: Alot of them are semi-difficult assuming I have my DVS and/or a shadow weapon. Mortafires (Misspelled in the OP) are easy, but annoying. Knockers are non-exsistant in my view. Scorchers are easy because I have a lot of fire resist on my gear and pushing them can often lead their attacks to miss.

Note: Most of them are easy to combo to death. Polyps are slow, Lichens are predictable, but Cubes can be harder. The spike-root attack can be difficult to predict and is generally my biggest problem. The rating on the Polyps is because I'm counting the C42 ones, which are pretty annoying.

Note: I'm not a FSC grinder, so I'm pretty bad at zombie slaying. :\ The Crusaders are really hard for me. Deadnaughts are easy because I typically have a DVS or a hammer which let's be kill them quickly. Kats aren't too hard for me due to my fast weapons. Howlitzers have the homing head thing, which while isn't nasty on it's own, can catch me pretty often. Why are Phantoms so low? Their HP is mediocre at best, they are slow, and they are VERY predictable. (They are one of the best examples of a complete over-nerf. Before I'd feel like crying the moment I stepped off the graveyard lift...)

You can't really rate the monster individually. 5 toxic lumber is a 1. 2 gremlin menders is, like, 0. They can't even attack you.

Now throw 5 toxic lumbers and 2 gremlin menders into the mix. Gremlins will just heal the lumbers and themselves, and you can't even poison the lumbers to prevent them getting healed.

Almirian Crusaders aren't that difficult by themselves. Throw them in a room where they and silkwings infinitely respawn and your real objective is to kill Deadnaughts who revive the usually cakewalk zombies and bombies? It gets a bit tough.

Hell, scuttlebots are incredibly easy! Possibly the easiest enemy in the game. Now have 10 of them attack you while you're dealing with a room full of gun puppies and rocket puppies. Suddenly you'll find those little bastards very hard to deal with.

1. They could shoot a flying star at you
2. They could smack you with their pimp stick
3. They could rez any type of monster that is dead
4. The healing circle was much bigger and superior

All monsters are at 1 if

All monsters in this game would have a score of "1" if you're only fighting one of them at a time... It's the amount of monsters you are challenged to fight at once that causes difficulty in this game... So I think the survey should be more about how many of a certain monster you think you can take on at once...

The beast family overall is more cute & cuddly than threatening... But if I am not paying enough attention then I can really get bit in the butt. (yay puns!)

What can be more satisfying than bashing pieces of moving mechanics into scrap metal? I suppose the overall enjoyment of engaging in combat with this group is what drags it's overall rating down. The stars of the show are the Rocket Puppys and Mecha Knights; while the former makes me run in circles to avoid those homing RPGs, and the later requires careful planning to come out of a scuffle unscathed. God help you if you get shocked by them.

Many a rage fit belongs to this family. Despite my best efforts, If I am not greater than half the throwing range of a devilite or overtimer, dodging is an impossibility. All shields against these guys seem to crumple like paper. Greavers have the highest effective status infliction I have seen thus far, leaving me to wonder if their status inflict coding was designed to somehow ignore shielding, and running from them when they engage their attack pattern will only guarantee a hit to your backside. Trojans do allow me to live the life of a matadore, however briefly, as their movements can be difficult to predict at times. Their area of effect (AOE) can also be tough to pin down when attacking or charging. Speaking of bullfighting, seeing a silkwink inspires a blind charge into whatever danger there may be only to thwack this unusually durable butterfly out of the air, conjuring a rather fitting analogy between an insect pinned onto a red velvet background for scientific display and myself stabbing at a Silkwing with my Final Flourish.

While the ghostmane stalkers (or ninjas as we prefer to call them) certainly pique the interest, these fuzy finicky creatures can be dangerous if one is not careful. They are managable otherwise, save for 1: The motafire. I never thought giving a rocket launcher to a rodent was a good idea, and this simply proves me right, but to add insult to injury, they put him in near indestructable armor.

I see this family the most through my travels. Hacking away hordes of zombies will always be a solid stress releaver, and I usually have plenty of it due to the homing missile of the Howlitzer's last hurrah, the Almirian Crusader's punishing charge attack, and the deadnaught constantly reviving nearby Bombies tossing me in a short-lived game of undead-pinball. Kats are on my ignore list since the recent dissapointing spawn rate of the black variety, so I will simply pretend they dont exist as I run lines like we used to in elementary grade Gym class.

I applaud your generosity, NJ.

The Wolvers need a serious buff. The Chromas on the other hand, I'd say they're about on par with other similar monsters.

The puppies can be hell if your mind is preoccupied with other threats. Retrodes are fun (but easy) to kill and dodge. Zombies are tougher. Mecha Knights are my worst nightmare in large groups and tight spaces without my DA/Vog set.

The only trouble I have with Fiends are with the Devilites if they're attacking from multiple sides. Greavers are easier for me to kill than Wolvers. I'd rate Trojans 2 if I didn't have my Blitz.

Thwackers cover a wide area when attacking, they're a decent challenge. Demos "can" be a huge pain but only if I'm sleepy enough to go for them first before finishing of the others. I don't fight stalkers often (nobody loves me that much) and they're the only Gremlins able to kill me consistently but it's been months since I fought one and Gremlin VH weapons are on their way so I've yet to see how difficult they'd actually be for me now. Knockers rarely hit me and I only recall being hit by the wide radius attack once and it stunned me (both the status and by the fact I got hit).

Polyps. They'd be as easy as gun puppies if only they didn't shoot all five projectiles at once; they're as difficult as Howlitzers.

The Undead family is a decent challenge. Howlitzers are a huge pain if I'm not paying attention (i.e. if it's 3 in the morning, too many things happening at once, etc). Kats are a decent challenge and can be tough if I try to be reckless (trying to kill one as it's lunging towards me for an epic finish, etc). Deadnaughts are alright; easy enough to dodge but a guaranteed death if cornered. Phantoms are (side-by-side comparison) a shadow version of Thwackers; only becomes a real threat when there's more than one. Almirian Crusaders, I've found, are a bit easier than Mecha Knights. Bombies are only difficult when laggy.

I'm rating these as if I was fighting their neutral versions in an average solo run. Everything gets a lot tougher in a 4-member party, shock themed run.

This all assumes T3 difficulty since in T1 & T2 everything is easy.

Beasts overall: 1. Their attacks aren't too fast or unpredictable.
I Chroma: 1. Their recon cloak almost never surprises anyone.
II Wolver: 1. Same with teleporting.
IIa Alpha Wolver: 2. Only because they usually come with a pack of wolvers. And if you don't have piercing defense their bite hurts.

Constructs overall: 1. They are very slow.
I Gun Puppy: 1.
Ia Rocket Puppy: 2.
II Lumber: 1. The only time these guys hit is when you're in a party and people shield-bump or knockback them into you as they are delivering a crushing blow.
III Mecha Knight: 2. A good solid monster that's fun to fight. Their charge attack and shield make them feel like true enemy knights to me.
IV Retrode: 1.
V Scuttlebot: 1.

Fiends overall: 3. Fast and seemingly unpredictable.
I Devilite: 2.
Ia Overtimer: 3. Defilers. The source of all my pain and frustration. But I still don't avoid them.
II Greaver: 2. Even if they come in a pack. Just don't combo them. Swing and shield-cancel.
III Trojan: 2. Another good solid monster with a shield.
IV Silkwing: 2.

Gremlins overall: 2. They used to be my hardest. But once they went to partial elemental damage (instead of all normal), menders got nerfed, and knockers got introduced, they got a lot easier.
I Thwacker: 2. Another solid monster with a shield. In case it's not yet obvious I think monster with shields are good ideas and make for a decent challenge.
II Mender: 4. These guys I can honestly say I avoid sometimes if I can. By that I mean I lure the other monsters away and kill them, then the menders come to try to heal them, and I kill the menders. Usually I only go through that trouble if there are multiple menders and other gremlins in the room. If they aren't gremlins they can't be rezzed so its not as bad.
III Scorcher: 1. These guys are a pain to track down sometimes when they are almost dead and run away.
IV Demo: 2.
V Knocker: 1.
VI Mortafire: 3. A shield that seems harder to overcome than other monsters. At this point the shield starts to get annoying though. And once you knock it off they pick up their shields too fast it seems to me.
VII Ghostmane Stalker: 2. Bah humbug!

Slimes overall: 1. Slow and predictable. But they can be tough in groups.
I Jelly: 1.
II Lichen: 1.
III Polyp: 1.

Undead overall: 1. More slow and predictable monsters.
I Howlitzer: 2. Sometimes the head gets me when someone else kills one and it targets me.
II Kat: 1.
III Phantom: 1.
IV Zombie: 1.
V Almirian Crusader: 2. More shield fun. He's probably my favorite shield monster. He'd be harder of course if he didn't go down to a blitz charge while sleeping most of the time.
VI Deadnaught: 1. But see below.
VII Bombie: 2. But only when paired with a Deadnaught or Grim Totem. Otherwise both are 1s.

Mortafire: 1 (I can deal with them but they're a pain in the behind when there are plenty of walls)

Slime family (Overall): Can I put 0?
Jelly: Not too bad except in large mobs, but a DR/ Lightning Capacitor deals with those mobs easily. 1 overall.
Lichen: Ancient Plate FTW! 1 for non-status ones, 2 for Quicksilvers or Oilers when I have no Freeze weapons.
Polyp: I tend to run into the back end of their spikes and get hit. 1 nonetheless

Undead family (Overall): 1
Howlitzer: 1 (2 if they're in mobs with party members killing them all at once; right gear = Blackened Crest or APS)
Kat: 1 (the Hammer tears them to pink ribbons) or 2 for Statikats.
Phantom: 1. I can go as the party's designated Phantom killer if so required; they're like Mecha Knights but slower, so bleh.
Zombie: -9999999999 except mobs of Shock zombies.
Almirian Crusader: 3 (ugh! I tend to activate them one by one with a gun, then Freeze them to death using Cryo Driver charges. Only in DMs so I don't have to worry)
Deadnaught: 1 for anywhere where movement is comparatively free. -1 for the FSC for pushing my recently-maced corpse out of Shadowfire. Thanks, guys. 3 for restricted movement places or with Bombie hordes.
Bombie: 1 unless you have a Totem/Deadnaught about, then it's 2-3.

AKA mainly too easy.

Previously, alpha wolvers were OP when they would port in the middle of a combo, leading to the unavoidable bite in the ass (especially painful with shock). Since that was changed, this family, imo, is by far the weakest. Numbers do little to nothing for their attacks. This family could use some stronger members ferrealz, and seems designed to be incapable of awesomeness alone. ME WANNA FIGHT BEAR. OR GORILLA. OR RHINO.

Construct Family (Overall): Far too loved by the developers. In contrast, I'm so sick of these guys. I will grudgingly admit they are better balanced as a family (2)
I. Gun Puppy 1
Ia. Rocket Puppy 2. Run in SPIRALS SPIRAL KNIGHT!!!
II. Lumbers 1

Too many constructs in the game, along with undead. I find myself equipping my ele spam weapons all too often. Change is good so let's try it :S

Fiend Family (Overall):Don't panic! (2)
I. Devilites 2. More of a threat than over-timers imo, but still fairly easy. I'd give them a 1.5 if I could.
Ia. Overtimers 1. Just trick them into their crappy melee attack and make 'em pay for being so silly.
II. Greavers 2. In conjunction with a lot of devilite spam, they often get the last hit if I end up dying, but usually simple attack spam takes 'em out fairly easily. Shield cancel = more pimp slaps for these hos. 1.5 as well
III. Trojan 1
IV. Silkwings Over 9000. Their meteor shower attack kills everyone on the map!!

Gremlin Family (Overall): Most Annoying award winners! DONT RUN JUST DIE. (1)
I. Thwacker 1
II. Mender 1. I was killed by their pimp slaps once when they had them... disgrace :(
III. Scorcher 1
IV. Demo 1
V. Knocker 1
VI. Mortafire 1 KILL THEM ALL. SCREW WEAPONS, USE POISON GAS.
VII. Ghostmane Stalkers 1. My favorite enemies! Much more interesting to fight than anything else, but too bad to fight them you have to run this low profit/energy ratio dungeon including the most annoying SOBs alive (Mortafires).

Slime Family (Overall): Need some kind of improvement...not sure what though (1)
