Hello Everyone,

I used to play Spiral Knights about 1 (maybe?) year ago, I think I got to T2 before I just stopped playing. I've started up again with a new character and wanted to get a few things in order.

Are swords still the "go-to" kinda weapons? When I was playing, swords were the only thing you could really use as a main weapon, if you wanted guns you had to have 4 different guns and you were still less effective. Bombs were for the crazy guys who just wanted to mess around.

Can you now use bombs or guns as "main" weapons?

Is the Wolver (I think that's what it's called :P) line still the "best" armor?

If I don't want to have 4 weapons (just keep the two slots) is it best to have one sword/gun or 2 swords/2 guns?

If I remember right, Neutral damage was the simplest and worked "ok" against all monsters, but should I have, say, a gun for certain types of monster and a sword for other types? Like a gun that's strong against Gunpuppies and a sword for close up monsters like Jellies? Or are some monsters just more dangerous and so I should get weapons to kill them fastest?
Looking at the wiki and damage types, if I get a Elemental gun for Gunpuppies (because I hate 'em) and a Shadow Sword for Slimes (because they come in hordes, if I remember right), then I should use my gun on Constructs, Undead, and Fiends, and use my Sword on Slimes, Gremlins, and Beasts, right? That way I'm strong against 2/3's of the game and neutral on the other third. Is this viable?

Has much really changed?

Thanks :)

There are "go-to" that do a lot, namely Polaris and Drivers. Also, Nitronome.

You always could've.

Now it's debatably Chaos, but Wolver's still good.

That's up to you.

That one's more suited for someone other than me.

You can check the announcements. They also may be adding pets this week.

Dukeplatypus gives good answers, including these, but I'll throw in mine too.

You could always use guns and bombs as main weapons, although bombs were a little tricky for novices. When using swords or guns (or a mix), you never needed more than 3 slots, to hold piercing, elemental, and shadow weapons. You also don't need more than 3 slots when using bombs. My main knight always uses 3 slots, and my secondary knights always use 2. No problem.

For sworders it's the best. For gunners, the Gunslinger line is best. For bombers the Demo line is the best. As Dukeplatypus mentioned, the Chaos set has recently been buffed, to the point where it's the best at everything --- except defense. Consult the Armor section of my detailed sword guide.

Yes. Consult the Mixing Weapon Types section of my sword guide. A piercing sword and elemental gun is a little stronger than a shadow sword and elemental gun, because fiends are really nasty (and piercing swords are pretty good against gremlins anyway). But shadow sword with elemental gun is also good.

Missions were a big change for most people, but you can still do the same old Clockworks, and the game is still delightfully fun. Welcome back.

Thanks Dukeplatypus. For the second question, where you say you always could've, I didn't mean it as *can* you do it (of course you technically *can*) I meant it more as "Are bombs and guns now as strong as swords?" When I was playing, bombs and guns were almost always secondary weapons.

Also thanks Bopp. I'm looking at your sword guide now :)

Thanks for your answers :)

May gun buff

To address your question more directly: Last May the damage numbers for guns and bombs were suddenly increased by roughly 15%. So they are more competitive with swords now, than they used to be. But, as we've said, playing with them has always been practical. For example, an alchemer in the hands of a master gunslinger is pretty potent. And Blitz Needle is pretty potent, even in the hands of a novice.

Question for Guns

Looking at your guide, I do agree that a Piercing Sword/Elemental Gun combo seems to be best for me, but how do Elemental guns do against Slimes? I'm pretty sure they used to be my worst enemy back when I played before. Are there any guns that do better against slimes?

Bombs and guns were always strong enough. But they might need strategy to work properly

Swords are just easier to get used to. Run towards and enemy and slash it. But that doesn't mean they are better.

guns against slimes

The best guns against slimes are the shadow guns: Umbra Driver (powerful), Sentenza (easy), and Biohazard (weird but fun). Elemental guns are neutral against slimes, so they're okay but not great.

But are you going to use one sword and one gun? Then choosing a shadow gun makes you strong against one kind of turret (polyps), neutral against another type (gun puppy), and weak to another type (howlitzer). Basically, if you're going to have only two weapons, then you can't be optimal against everything.

You may recall slimes being pretty tough, but I would say that they're one of the easier monster families. That's one reason why I advocate for the piercing-sword-elemental-gun combination. Anyway, get a shadow weapon if you like; you'll want to have one eventually anyway. But don't be surprised if your opinion on slimes changes, as you progress through the game.

One Sword, One Gun

I'm going to do one sword and one gun. I don't really want to pay any money :P

I think I'm going to go with the Flourish line and decide on a gun later. My main gripe is that I can't be optimal in all situations without buying extra slots for weapons.

So far since I restarted, slimes haven't been too bad, so maybe I have distorted memories about my past slime experiences... Anyway, I'm going to play a bit more and see how I do against slimes this time.

Now all I need to do is choose a Shield and Armor...

You know you don't have to pay real money for CE, right? And you also know that a Weapon Slot Upgrade is only 250 CE? Right? So you don't actually have to pay any money to have more than just two weapons at a time. If you end up with some CE to spare, I'd say go for it if only to have a bit more versatility.

Maybe I should have said I'm going to use 1S/1G for now, since of course eventually I'll be able to afford more stuff.
I do understand that you can buy CE with Cr, but at the stage I am at in the game (barely T2), I don't have a lot of excess Cr laying about, and I would rather spend my CE and Cr on making more money so that I can grow my assets. I don't have any sort of disposable income, and 250 CE is (about) 17-18k Cr right now.
