With no UVs, you get:
-Some normal
-Lots of elemental
-Some shadow
-med shock and fire resistance and curse resistance
-Very high vs fiends
-med vs everything else
-CTR med for everything
-Negative freeze and poison resistance
-No piercing resistance

Why is this good?
-Fights off gun puppy bullets well
-There are more sources of non-piercing damage than piercing damage when you consider that the beast family is a joke and that much of royal jelly palace deals normal damage.
-Leveling up, you'll have the shock you need to get through ICMF comfortably.
-The token items from ICMF make that better to grind than jelly king. So you'll only be doing that once, optimally.
-This set provides resistances that are strongest against mixed or pure elemental and mixed shadow. This is good for FSC.
-CTR+damage benefits almost all weapons. It makes
-If you do get UVs, low or med shock/normal/fire ones aren't too hard to find and will increase your resistances by much more than they would if you had a different set due to the fact that in the end you get up to med. A low fire on a vog hat would only raise it's resist by 1/4 of it's total- here it would by 1/2.

Discuss.

It's good... at 5*. New players might want a more immediate bonus.

"New players might want a more immediate bonus."

You mean like a ton of shock and fire resist on top of considerable elemental defence?

@"A more immediate bonus is better" (Kind of along the lines of what Zeddy said)

Because sword damage low is somehow better than fire+shock resistances. It is my belief that as a newer player, you should be learning a defensive playstyle, not trying to force offensive ones to work for you. While a minute amount of damage may help you, the added benefits of resisting shock+fire are much larger, and can make those levels far more playable.

Then there is that we always tell people to go for gear that ends at 5*. Saying that wolver, or any other gear for that matter, is better due to it's immediate benefits kind of demeans the point, when you get a much better offensive setup in the long run from a defensive setup in the short run by going with the magic setup.

This also looks at being 4* as being about the halfway point towards having a large amount of items and then leaving in the game. The first half of the game consisting of fighting through T2 and entering T3 requires you to learn to be defensive and the patterns of most of the monsters etcetera. This part does not really require you to do much. Then, when you get to T3 you are given a choice between what to upgrade next. You can either upgrade your weapons or chaos cloak. These will make you into an offensive powerhouse and will transform you rapidly into being a damage machine- which you should at this point know if you'd like to become. Or you can upgrade your shield or magic hood, which will make you a bit more defensive. The whole set ends at what I would consider the 60-70% point of the game. The remaining time that you spend in the game will let you upgrade your weapons- which you won't need to get new armor for. You can also get more armor if you want it however- chaos cloak works exceedingly well with pretty much everything- especially with things like deadshot. All avenues are open to you.

@Larry and other belligerents

Please read the opening post before commenting.

"Leveling up, you'll have the shock you need to get through ICMF comfortably."

This directly implies progression, as do many other parts of the OP.

Gaaaaah! My WoT got erased!

Well. I wrote something long and nice but that was deaded so you're stuck with this:

The Magic set line is definitely one of if not the best. It provides you all the defense you need to get to T3 without dying horribly and you can even decide whether you want to go full defensive (Grey+Divine), midway (Divine+Chaos), or full out glass canon (Chaos+Chaos).
Not only is it good for bombers, gunners, swordsmen, and hybrids but the CTR makes Catalyzer, Alchemers, Brandishes, and Bombs oh so much better and you don't even need UVs if you've a good enough shield. (I've been doing Compound 42 with Chaos Cloak, Black Kat Cowl, and Wyvern Scale shield)

I encourage the thought of there being more than just wolvers running around everywhere that I will be selling magic cloaks to anyone at vendor price (750 crowns). Just contact Amanzi or Bladderrust ingame. (One cloak per knight.)
