How about deleting inactive accounts?

I'm trying to create a backup character, and so far every name I come up with is taken. I've tried every character from just about every book and movie I've ever read. I've tried a few dozen different combinations of (some color)(something else). I've tried more than I can remember variations in Italian, Spanish, French, and even Portuguese. I've even tried a handful of obscure geographical locations. There's no way all of these names are active accounts. I'm sure there are a ton of accounts out there that people have ditched. I've spent the last half an hour trying to get a name. At about one name every 5 to 10 seconds, that's about 270 attempts to find a name. How about cleaning house?

Not really.

People could've played on accounts.

Hiatus and such.

Here is my view:L

Get over it and get a different one ^_^

Also, OOO doesn't permit some names.

I'm trying to get over

I'm trying to get over it...but almost an hour and a half later, I still don't have a name. I think I might turn this post into a blog until I have one. I'm like the childlike empress from the Neverending Story...and yeah, all those character names are taken, too. :)

I've added Welsh and Basque...I don't even know where people speak Basque. The only available name that has come up so far is the Swahili word for the F-word. Out of decency, I took a pass.

Just think of some random name

It shouldn't be to hard. Think of your pet's name or something. Its how I got my name, just by sharing my dog's name with him. If you don't have a pet, think of a fruit or color or something in that range and put it together in a certain way you like.

Oh come on, I could make a hundred different names that wouldn't be taken already. Just yesterday I made Sir-Turtlebear, and that was the exact name I had in mind before I started on him.

Try prefixing or suffixing your desired name with Sir, Ser, Mister or Fluffybuns. Try to avoid calling your knight anything involving Blood, Awesome, Sword or Pwnlolzorsomfghax, as those are all taken. All of them.

Do you think it's a good idea to put a system that automatically delete inactive players just because you couldn't find a name in that's about 270 attempts?

Your names are predictable...?? and people have mules too...??

Yes, I think it's a good idea to delete inactive accounts. I'm not talking about a few weeks or even months. I'd be fine with a solid year.

Why does everyone immediately think when you have someone else take your name, that your entire account gets deleted? -.-

Puns Puns Puns

I wanted to be a bomber so I called myself Unstable-Ordnance (Ordnance means ammunition or mounted artillery). But then, I thought that it might be taken so I made a pun out of ordnance, into Ordinance (Ordinance means a piece of legislation).

You might want to try shortenings like Knellr or perhaps Knight-Kneller. Just one tip, if you're making names with two words put together then the first word in the compound is what you'll be referred to, unless it's three words or less.

e.g. My first account was Neonguard, and people called me Neon. Now, people just call me Unstable.

Dude, you just have to think like a dumb person to get a name. For example, try Alibaba-Master or Potato-Smasher. That kind of crap mostly isn't taken.
I am not saying you are dumb, nw. NTO anyone who thinks he's dumb or stuff.

"I have a friend who only recently returned after a year of inactivity. She would not have been pleased with returning to the loss of her amassed fortune."

Well, if her account was all that big of a deal, she shouldn't have ditched it for a year without even logging in. There are WAY more people who create an account, putter around the game a bit, decide it's not for them, and move on, than people who care about their account and just happen to not log in for a year.

Perhaps not delete inactive

Perhaps not delete inactive accounts, but lose rights to a character name. When you log in, you would be forced to change the name of any characters you had whose name had been taken.

You already have a name.

Also, why delete inactive accounts? What if the person is going to a place with no technology for one year? What happens if the person goes to Summer School or can't go on Spiral knights for one year? If they rejoin, the problem is they can't.

If paid users are inactive for one year, your going to delete their accounts just for not playing? Sorry, no way. Nobody wants a paid account deleted. It's like you pay and you still have a limit in account deletion. Sorry, no thanks.

Do you know that people have... a social life?

And that things happens in real life that makes someone not play video games?

Like having a kid for exemple... or having a stroke... or meeting someone special...

Or you are just tired of this game and was hyped up for Diablo III and found out that it was garbage and got back to SK 7 months later

Take your head out of your *** please.

There are WAY more people who create an account, putter around the game a bit, decide it's not for them, and move on, than people who care about their account and just happen to not log in for a year.

For someone who doesn't even have a name, I find it hard to believe that you know SOOO much about SK yet... I know so many people that actually are off until something appealing happens. In fact I can already name a few but I won't because it's against the ToS.

A lot of people came in for the Winterfest and *hop* vanished until the Valentine promotion kicked in and the announcement of Battle Sprites...

The fact that people come and go on a regular basis is proof that if you delete a Knight (or an account) for inactivity you actually hurt the game more in itself.

People (like me) who were off for a long period of time usually have expensive and valuable stuff. I know someone who hasn't connect since September and he has so many Valkyrie wings and Arcane Halo. Destroying his char would mean destroying more than 50 millions worth of cr.

A MMO server usually keeps the char files intact, people usually avoid to manipulate those files in order to keep it safe and prevent corruption

Edit: Also... Name Randomizer

This thread has fallen apart because of the lack of general knowledge among commenters that when names are taken, accounts are renamed rather than deleted, and the failure on the commenters' part to read previous comments.

I strongly advise the OP to graveyard this thread, and start another identical one that contains more accurate information.

accounts are renamed rather than deleted,

My account name is my steam ID (something in the likes of SteamID:771785817591), how would they renamed it so that I can still connect to it then?

Natsu is a banned name. I know the guy who had it :D

Most MMORPG don't delete accounts or character for inactivity...

Talking from a technical PoV

It's easier to simply put new info into an existing database than to take something out of said database. Requires more work, could result in more lag, result in employee fixing this if it crash. Meaning you have to have a backup of it too somewhere...

Oh and also... if only a thousands players play SK then why all the names where taken? And how am I able to still create alts with good names? (I had to created 2 alts again because I forgot the password over the months away. And it took me... 1 try on each to get a name. And I bet I wouldn't have trouble making a name in WoW or in Starcraft II, or in LoL...

Your characters are renamed, in this case.

If you've ever played RuneScape, you'd know that if you don't play for a year, are below a certain level, and have never spent money on the game, your name can be taken (and you have to rename your character the next time you log in)
However, you still use the same username at the login screen.

I believe many other MMOs do this also.

deleteing accounts is a bad

deleteing accounts is a bad idea, i hadnt played in 9 months due to school (if you say i souldive droped out instead of stayed, you have more urgent issues that need attending to other then the name for a backup) before i started playing again with a consiterable amount of stuff, and that included about 25-40$ worth of energy that i bought myself

think people are going to be happy when they buy energy then end up losing it because of personal matters keeping them away? the way i see it, this can end up seen as theft.

instead, lets stick with what hexzyle is saying : if you never spent IRL money on the game, are below a certian rank, and you dont play for a very long time your supectable to having your knight's name taken. however, if you have spent money or you are above the soldier rank, your name is secure

Meh.

Just allow duplicate names on connected accounts and force the crafters to pick a generic name for all their characters. That'll free up space. Heck, why not? I'd love this alt to have the same name as my main. The mail system already has the functionality for a given piece being claimable by only one character per account, just expand that. Combine that with a bank I can toss my crap into and claim it with the other character and we're golden. I suppose you'd need to have shared CE/crowns too but eh, the bank can take care of that. (Also, protect you from bidding 4 million on a sock.)

Just allow duplicate names altogether! Here's how Champions online did that.

My full name would, for instance, be Zeddy@Zeddy. If Fehzor wanted to call herself Zeddy, she could be Zeddy@Fehzor (provided Fehzor is also her account name, which I dunno if it is of course.)

Well, actually, that could be a bit problematic with the Steam thing because I'd be Zeddy@Steam:XXXXXXXXXXXXXX. That'd be a bit of a pain to send mail to!

Has anyone but me ever played Diablo II? This game is ground-breaking and people are forgetting the little aspect of that game...

D2 Inactivity system: You gotta play 10 hours (total) for your char to become "permanent", while in "temporary" phase, you have 12 days to play said 10 hours. If you log, play 1 hour and leave, the 12 days restart.

Upon becoming "permanent" character you have a 90 days inactivity span you "can't" play without harm. After those 90 days, your character is removed from the active player list but is still existent. If a new character is named by your inactive character than your char gets deleted.

You can re-activate your char at anytime after the 90 days inactivity (I have 20+ D2 char that are inactive and will never get deleted due to their awkward names) as long as their name was not taken by someone during your time away. (let's say you have a Sorceress named Gandalf, odds are your char will be deleted not long after the 90 days inactivity. If you had named him "Gandalf_sorcXxX", odds are your char will never get deleted)

My mule with rings, charms and ammy got deleted that way because she had a predictable name.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't need to have a fancy system "like most MMO uses" you can have a cheap system that works perfectly like this one.

Way less problem and it's actually easy to understand and to build it as a technician.

So Diablo 2 can entirely delete your character from a 3-month break? I'VE taken 3-month breaks from Spiral Knights! The loss of my character sure would make me eager to return to the game and spend more money on it!

Instead of deleting, can't we just have a rename thing? Go inactive, your name can be taken. If it's taken, you merely have to get a new name.

No.

Nick did mention that nobody can request name changes or new ones unless deemed "Inappropriate". Instead, I would go inactive, throw that name away and take the one I want. You can also have a chance of impersonating.

Another example about that is that a good knight in Spiral knights is well-known, and for some reason, he had to leave for a few months. What if someone poses as that person? It would cause more issues.

Your friends and guildies would say "Who the f*** is that person" once your name is changed. It would cause confusion.

Conclusion: Alot of issues like impersonation, name changes and stuff like that are issues.
