So. This upcoming week (Episode 23) will have a discussion in it called the "BASICS of Lockdown". We'll be talking about the simple stuff for people who may or may not often frequent the Coliseum.

In only so many words, tell us what you think are the most important bare bones facts about Lockdown.

Specifically, we're looking for just enough so that someone would know which class they would want to pick and how to play.
This includes not-very-well-known but vital information, important strategies, and the like.

There will be future discussions about other aspects of Lockdown but this is the start.

Ready, set, GO!

I guess I'll start it off

-Capturing points is more important than attacking the other players.
-Defending is just as if not more important than capturing.
-Staying alive is more important than killing. Even if you trade one-for-one, you could have run away instead and done something more useful.
-try to stay with your team. Fights are much harder when you have no one to work with, and a split up team can easily be defeated by a grouped one.
-pick a weapon set (make sure it's viable, no cautery swords or catalyzers please) and learn it. Each style of sword, gun and bomb has different techniques, and it's better to be good at one than be mediocre at them all.
-sadly, the damage you can deal is more important than your defense. Try to get one of the weapon specialist armors (Wolver, Demo or Gunslinger) or a universal buff armor like Chaos.
-Family bonuses are useless in LD, there are no monsters. :P
-know about invincibility frames and as a rule of thumb, try to avoid the fastest weapons (Cutter, Autogun and Antigua) as they will trigger invincibility frames and hurt your team more than it helps.
-People don't like Pulsar or Rocket Hammer users. They're pretty easy to use, but Use at risk of being labelled a spammer.
-for sword users:
->LEARN TO SHIELD CANCEL. This is the most important thing to know if you want to be able to hold off an experienced player.
-If you play in Tier 2, read this. It's a thread about fighting against Wolver Clones.

1. Spend as much cash as you

1. Spend as much cash as you can on trinkets and triple-uv five star weapons, barbarous thorn shield, and skolver set
2. Spam polaris and BTB. Use NOTHING ELSE.
3. Don't bother capping or defending. The winner is the one with the most damage points.
4. Be sure to spawncamp when you're at least 200 points ahead.
5. Revive any time you die, no matter the cost.
6. ????
7. PROFIT!

Basic Lockdown tips

Here's a few tips I see new players need to learn in a lockdown match.

-Don't combo unless you know you will absolutely hit and kill your target. So many new player go in and combo all day long and wonder how people are just avoiding their hit then just smacking them back after. I save comboing as a last resort when I'm about to die and the enemy is 1 hit away from dying and I know I can hit him if I second swing.

-Capturing a point is super important as that is how you win the game but it's not as important as defending those points. Sure you can do a trade but it usually takes more people to capture a new point then to defend an already captured point. Even if you can buy 2-4 seconds of extra time for that point tick to go through you will have done the job so it is important to STAY ON THE POINT even if there are enemies nearby shooting at you. So many times have I seen people run off and chase after an enemy leaving an uncapped point that is almost capped. This alone can very well cost the game.

-In random lockdown chances are there will be a leaver(there usually is) so these situations don't panic and just be smart about it. If you can't kill anyone because of your gear or skill etc then just distract them. As I have mentioned above people like to chase after enemies so use this to your advantage and just bait them away from a point so your teammates can cap it. Just because you can't kill people doesn't mean you can't contribute.

-If you can't bait anyone like the tip above says then go guardian and shield people fighting. This can give someone 2-3 extra hits before they die which is huge for a skilled player! It is best to do this on a point as then you can cap the point and shield yours allies at the same time.

-For random lockdown mist bomb are usually the best point shutout weapons in the game(some people argue polaris but a good player can just weave through polaris volleys with ease). So if you are going guardian and you want to stop people from getting close to you so you can cap a point(or even just to delay them a few seconds for re-enforcement to show) use a mist bomb and spam it on the point while dodging any polaris that comes at you( use the bomb area as a buffer zone between the enemy and you so they don't get too close). This can win games sometimes as people are usually not going to risk running straight into a bomb and being potentially killed as they are spazzing or stunned. A good bomb for this are Voltaic tempest and Stagger Storm.

-For those of you who like using brandish charges please don't charge your brandish in the middle of a fight as you could be killing the enemy while you are charging. It is best to use your charge when you are moving to another point and use it as sniping tool which can catch people off guard very easily. I tend to try to catch people at the very tip of my charge as people will not be able to see you if you come from the bottom of the screen.

-A general tip for everyone either newbs or pros. Whenever you can help it always attack someone from the bottom of the screen as this will give people a lot less time to react. The way the camera is position in spiral knights most people can see very far at the top of their screen compared to the bottom of the screen. This make surprise attack from the bottom of the screen very effective. I've killed many people running in from the bottom of the screen and killing them before they even have time to react. This can be use in many other ways such as alchemer charges, brandish charge or even a bomber going in for the point since by the time people noticed you will already be on the point and placed your bomb.

-I generally agree with Noklip about staying alive however there are always exceptions to this. You have to be smart and judge your situation in every game. If your about to lose in a very close match and the enemy is about to cap the point you're on then STAY ON THE POINT! Always look at the timer and if you can stay alive and prevent them from finish capturing the point then you can win! In times like these I usually try to kite the enemy around the point or try to push them out of it with a gran faust or something with knockback to buy myself 1-2 extra seconds. There's been a lot of close game where the winner and loser can be determined by whether or not you stayed on the point or ran away. Don't be a chicken! Dying doesn't have any consequences in lockdown other then having to wait to respawn so don't run away from a point that's about to cap if you can help it.

-Lastly here's a tip for new player who find it hard to kill skolvers and wolvers in t2 and t3. The wolver line usually have piercing defense(shocker right there!) So use your head and pick an elemental or shadow weapon when fighting them. Brandish, gran faust, and divine avengers come to mind. I also like to use hammers even if people complain since they deal pure elemental as oppose to gran faust and divine avengers who deal split damage which is mitigated by the wolver defense. If you still find it hard to kill a good player then use status weapons to help limit their mobility and fighting potential. A good player is no good when he's spazzing in front of you like a fly in a fly zapper.

GvG is a whole nother monster when it comes to strategies and tactics so if you host anymore lockdown podcast episodes I can discuss more in-depth strategies and tactics then

Roughly ordered from the most technical/specific to the most heurisitc/holistic (and possibly also least to most important):

  • There is pretty much only one techskill in Spiral Knights, namely shield cancelling. It removes the cooldown frames from an attack, and can be done with any sword or gun; the gain for bombers is generally not as large. If you plan on using guns and/or swords, practice shield cancelling outside of LD until you feel comfortable with it.
  • Striker is probably the first class to try. Striker's dash is the most different from normal shields, and the lower health will make learning harder. I recommend starting with Guardian, as it is a pretty direct translation of shields from PvE, or Recon, as it is generally safe to be invisible and helps to learn the mindgame sides of both fighting and capturing.
  • It's ultimately all about capturing (and controlling) the capture points. Yes, damage (often) helps towards that end, but damage is only a means to that end. Focus on the capture points.
  • All that said, don't be afraid to try things out. Switch up the class you use, the weapons you run, try something unconventional. I lied when I said it's all about the control points; it's ultimately about having fun. If you're not having fun, try switching something up, or just take a step back and do something else instead of hitting "Play Again". Rage and complaining won't help anything.

Not a tip per se, but ask people questions and check out the wiki; players and the wiki both house a wealth of information. I don't claim to be very good, but if you have specific questions, about T2 in particular, feel free to send me a mail.

I concur

Ellip pretty much hit most of it head on. But could use a bit more tweaking :3

-CP Time management: No matter what way you look at it, capping puts you at a terrible position. You're at most vulnerable capping a point (hint hint, camera abuse, wink wink), you're usually not doing anything else and whatever skills and gear you have is irrelevant, any new player wearing proto caps at the same rate as a UV'ed Wolver Clone. How to remedy this problem? Simple, cap in groups. Your entire team benefits, you spend less time capping, less time being vulnerable, and more time doing whatever (be it causing as much pain as possible or simply cap some more).

-Enemy prediction: No one likes spending more time on a CP than they have to. They move towards the next point as soon as it's captured/defended which makes their movements somewhat predictable. General rule: They always move to the closest point that isn't theirs. Use this info to snipe points they "just" captured *trollface* or move towards the points their going to go next to defend. P.s. You can tell to some degree how many enemies are capping a point by how fast the CP indicator in the map changes colour.

In response to what Noklip

In response to what Noklip said about monsters, it is possible for a rock jelly to spawn in certain levels with rocks. They are quite rare so it's rather unlikely you will find one but I thought it was worth mentioning (they've caught me by surprise before).

Well here are my suggestions; I've tried to include points that I feel are relevant, easy to understand and haven't been mentioned by others yet.

-You may want to read this section of the Lockdown wiki page for information on classes: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Lockdown#Classes
-Your class choice may differ based on preference and the current situation. For example, I tend to start with the striker class because capturing the first point is a great way to pull ahead. I will switch to the guardian class shortly after and remain so for the rest of the game.
-Find the weapons that work best for you (this may take some experimenting). It would be wise to choose weapon types that are given a bonus when using your preferred class e.g. a recon will likely want to use bombs. If you plan on using multiple classes, preparing PvP loadouts will help.
-It isn't always a good idea to engage in combat. Sometimes retreating is the better option. If someone chases after you, you may find it easier to kill them (it is possible that a team member will spot you and provide you with some help. Even if you don't manage to defeat the enemy, you still managed to cause some stalling.
-Time is precious: make the most of it. Games can get pretty close at times. So close, in fact, that the game may go into tiebreaker (when both teams have the same amount of points and control points captured, the game won't end until one team earns more points than the other).
- Anything is possible, provided there is enough time to do so. It's possible to make a comeback with a point difference of over 200. Never give up.
- Remember to be respectful to other players. If you enjoyed the game, let them know. Ridiculing a player is not the way to go.
- Cliche time: have fun. This game is meant to be enjoyed, right? Good luck. :)
