So I was looking around the media section, when I saw that in several of the screenshots, one of the knights is wearing a black kat cowl. Did it feature in the preview event but not make it into the first release?

No, the Magikat Hat is black. The Feral Kat Hat was a deep purple helm from the Preview Event. It shares the same color as the Black Kat Cowl, but it has a slightly different model, in particular the side straps.
None of the Kat Hats from the Preview Event were implemented in the Kat Event, although the colours were re-used and the model's bases were altered.

That's the name, I meant Feral, I just couldn't remember what it was called.
I don't believe it was the Black Kat Cowl in particular, rather the Magikat Hat.
But yes, it was in beta and didn't get into the actual game.
