Why are so many people leaving spiral knights?!

So lately i seen so many loyal long term players leaving the game and selling all their stuff due to mismanagement and content for the game.. me personally was warned before starting the game that ping was a joke.. as an australian i found it hard to beleive that there was no asian/aus servers considering how important connections are these days in online co-op games, so i thought it would be a matter of time before there were upgrades. WRONG. i dont know the story why but for some reason we have been neglected... lockdown is really fun but unplayable for us, im able to get kills and do ok (non-striker) only to be abused by people for lagging. i will warn all aussies i meet from now on to leave and not waste their time and or money on shananigans. im sure i will get blow back for this post so feel free to pm my account as much as u want . To the gamers good luck and good game.

i also searched all day every day in the katastrophe event with a epass throught th whole event, watched everyone around me find a book of dark rituals, while i was left to ask what the heck was i thinking, did i ever have a chance. over 1000 tokens and all i get is a slap in the face.. lol. i know im not the only one so im not that angry jus disappointed.

jus like to see the money reaching the right places.

I quitted the game a few

I quitted the game a few times:
-First time because I wasted a few millions hardcorely farmed crowns on trying to punch a CTR VH on a sealed sword..With everything I wasted I could have bought at least 3 of them.
-Second time because OOO decided to give away outrageous amounts of 1-2-3 UV tickets to a "select few" who somehow made the very, very, very lucky bet to craft a lot of Crystal bombs. OOO offered one UV ticket per bomb based on the tier of the bomb, it resulting in people obtaining over 200 single UV ticket, 50 2 UV tickets and a handful of 3 UV tickets in a single patch.
-Third time because I was simply busy in real life and felt that with nearly 60 days of playtime over a year and a half it was maybe time for me to take an extended break (yet again).

I came back to the game 6 weeks ago now and I honestly felt a good wind of change since I last left; I don't regret joining back at all. It just seems to me there are less players than before; but I'm hoping many players will come back during Summer! If a lot of new updates come up by then, I'm sure they'll stay like I'm staying.

EVENTS!

HOLY CATFISH xD i was wondering where all those tickets came from. i seen a few in boxes and the rest is probs from then... i agree numbers are way down atm, during winterfest u couldnt move withouth bumping into another player but since its been a few months since a worth while event id say people are playin other games or simply too burnt out for spirals. i go throught stages of leaving for other games and if asia could get a server im sure id play alot more and others would too. i swear half the post i read are aussies leaving or asians complaining about the servers... laggin in a shadow lair is the worst hahahaha hopefully these issues are addressed promptly.

hopefully the next event isnt far away i mean its easter this weekend.. that will draw some ppl back.

Whilst it takes more practice to get 'good' with the Australian latency, It's entirely possible to become good at lockdown. Several of my Australian guildmates (Smashgear, Decostop to name a few) and I have become good enough at lockdown to not only have fun but to often be one of the best players on the team. Practice is all it takes. Katastrophe wasn't the most well-thought-out event in terms of the drops. You must be playing lockdown in a completely different place to me, because I've never been 'abused' for lagging.

I suppose it's their loss if people listen to this person's advice; they miss out on a great game!

Im from asia and i lag, well

Im from asia and i lag, well but tough f&^%k.
In pvm u have learn to raise your shield to defend before attacks reach u.
In pvp, which im not good at....you have to slash places where u think your opponents will move towards lol its really weird but i can live with it.

But replying the topic, one of the main reason why people r leaving is because lack of update events and news.

Its true that we get festival events like xmas , summer and etc. But most games out there have weekly weekend events, not main patches but just stuff to keep the community amused. The last event we had is valentines and it did not even have any new additions to the game, just a perma love puppy mask that looks exactly the same as the 30 day one.

Fine it m9ght be a lot of work and needs to go through many layers of approval and tests, but at this day and age not only is it important to live up to the customers expectation, and sometimes exceed it.

are people leaving?

I've never played the game from Australia, but I imagine that the latency is gigantic, and I sympathize with Australian players.

But what evidence do you have that people are leaving at a faster rate than usual? People have been joining and leaving this game continually, ever since it launched (and probably in the beta phase as well). Is this all based on the attention-seeking threads that you sometimes see on the forums? Pay them no attention. For every person who quits and makes a thread about it, there are many more who quit and don't make a thread about it, and there are also plenty who join the game.

I've only seen one aussie get abused

he was an absolute monster of a gunner getting 10-15k+ dmg for a few games, then someone starts being really arrogant to him and calls him out for having good variants on his guns or something like that. Then he got really hostile and maybe racist (indirectly) about it. The problem might not be the game or the server, it might actually be the people playing it that don't understand humility.

I sympathize with him because I've tried gunning myself and well.. lets say you could go insane trying to predict the future.

thats why I'm switching to swords for pvp in the future. because you can 1. use auto-aim 2. rocket hammer, it seems to be what works for the other aussies. An aussie that even attempts gunning without a polaris is extremely rare it seems.

Left the game, not the forums, don't fret people.

Here are some reasons why I left.

#1 The lag
Though true it takes practice to get well even on 300ms ping, but I still feel that sting when a monster whacks me to death without me knowing because I don't have the time to react. Human reaction time is approximately 200ms, that said, 300ms ping is deathly. Of all the monsters, fiends are the worst, because they tend to hit me with their toasters before I block it with my shield.

#2 The lack of diversity
Not to say how lacking the game is in the number of weapons or gears, but I think that the game balance is so one-sided (I mean who wouldn't use Wolver set?) it isn't fun experimenting on any of the equipment, not to mention the price of 1 single 5 star gear, and also considering that I am purely free to play. That said again, I also noticed how there isn't much difference in between knights. A knight can basically be a swordsman, gunner or bomber, or all of them. That's right, ALL OF THEM. I think a skill tree system would work perfect on this game, and hopefully more weapon/gear balance, not sure how to implement it.

#3 Repetitive gameplay
King of Ashes, says it all. Done 1 shadow lair before, not much to expect out of it either, just the swarm making some difference, however, it's still pretty much the same maps. All prestige missions done, all danger missions done. Yeah, it's boring.

As an Aussie, I did try to gun at one point.. I failed miserably. That said, swapping to mostly swords and getting an average of 8k, with a horrible ping (you know? that 300ms everyone's mentioning), I must be doing something right... or maybe I'm just lucky.

Regardless, I feel people leave because SK is a game you really need to stick to, to progress (I mean, getting 700 CE per 5* item as a F2P player is damn tedious). Of course, such a system implies repetitive gameplay.. and that just bores the hell out of people.

Heck, the only reason I stay is because of the people I talk to, and that I want to get an active guild going. If not for that, I wouldn't play.

Define people "leaving". Do people delete their characters and refuse to remake a new one? Or do people take a break for a few months and return for new contents?

I managed three guilds over the last two years. From what I'm seeing, SK population are content driven: most of them stay for new contents while said contents are still fresh. Otherwise they would just head for another game and take a look at SK only when there are something interesting.

I believe the "core" population of SK is roughly 3.2k, of which around 800-1.2k is from Steam. (Core means they login almost every day, including alts.) So it could be that the people who are "leaving" that you described are just the stray population outside of the core.

Well

I haven't "left" but I am in "stasis" so to say. And my group of friends. For us, it is due to not having new "meaty" free content since well... a year ago? We crafted everything we wanted in the meantime, missions were a way to replay everything with a story - which in the end didn't add anything new... and sort of lurked and helped a bit in the guild we were. But as time went on, we had nothing left to do... so we are waiting.

On the meantime, we are playing (and waiting for) other games - it is surprising what some small staffs can do on (even if mostly instanced) mmo games, this one (as well as others we are playing) being a good example. Even if it has had some bad decisions as the game progressed, it has been a good ride at least the first six months. I wish I could pick up this game again with the same joy I had back then, but well, we had all existing Cradle to explore back then... maybe the novelty wore off?

Maybe if all that content behind paywalls or "once in a moon through grinding" was free, we could have 5 more endgame dungeons to tackle... I love IMF, and tried the SL version invited by some guildmates. Wish I could run it much more often.

Played solidly over a year,

Played solidly over a year, and used to buy ele passes almost monthly and CE packages when there were some semi-decent offers.
Since New Year however I've been on it less and less and only in the last couple of weeks have I started to pick it up again, albeit only for 30 mins at a time each day.

I've done ALL the Shadow Lairs, Completed all the Danger Missions, and of course regular "Missions" and was an 'Arcade'er' before the Missions were introduced, Guild Hall upgrades weren't as enjoyable / interesting as they should be & cost a small fortune if you're in a small Guild (No, I don't want to be in a large guild, too much drama, etc..)

So the only thing left is getting desirable UV's on items that I use regularly..

Game needs a constant flow of new enemies (which we are getting soon judging by twitter feed info) and of course something for after Vanaduke. Otherwise it feels like another completed game now, which is losing replay value...

laziness, boredom, bad teammates.

Every time I play a few floors, one of the following happens:

  1. Nobody joins. At all. Even in the arcade, where you can join at ANY floor. Or else I click "join" and there are ZERO parties available. By the way, party finder is useless and broken.
  2. Everyone is deaf, either because of refusal to get steam, disabling voice chat entirely due to one or two people, or because they have music or crap blasting in the background and don't want to pay attention to the game
  3. Someone decides to be a jerk and completely sabotage the party (ESPECIALLY in Blackstone Bridge. It makes King of Ashes almost unplayable because there will always be one or two dastards who ruin everything)

It all boils down to the lack of contents. This causes all sort of other problems like lack of flow of people (a big problem to small guilds, the problem is less to bigger guilds) and so Guild Hall expansion, while having some interesting aspect, do not fully realize its potential.

And if you end up playing with the same group of people over and over and over again, or the alternative is, join a PUG and hope the noob in your group don't cause a stroke in you, the interest in the game would naturally die down. Then when promotion comes, we found out it's a grindfest. That I believe is completely missing the point of SK. You want new, interesting content, to retain and attract people. The flow of people would help you grow that gamer base.

It's like a river. More fishes tend to dwell in a flowing river. Your river is not flowing, fishes swim to somewhere else.

Batabii - find a guild.

For me the game becomes more and more boring. I still wait for full 5* gear set (energy price to drop).
Big lag at vana fight.

Game needs more events, new levels. Maybe random floor builder ? Like in diablo MANY years ago.
I try not to enter 'garden' levels - boring, and the wolvs are real pain with all the disapearing.
More danger rooms.

Why i left

Lack of new bosses. The lifeblood of the game, still baffled that they havent worked on a T3 boss. Vanaduke is so old he makes betty white look like young teenager.

Promised updates that never came to fruition im looking at you magnus line and tortodrone.

All my friends who had called it quits.

000 abuses promos and doesnt even try anymore recolors items or rehash the same items I find that greedy and lazy.

Shard bombs i loved the old share bombs now they are simply no more than a fancy firecracker.

The market for all items crashing like stones. The only way make money is to merch when that died I pretty much had no reason left to play.

-Lack of new bosses: and REAL ONES, i dont consider Maulos, the machine in ghost in machine and those oilers with flamethrower gremlins as bosses. theyre pretty much just mid bosses at least, but not REAL BOSSES. danger missions were good but due the lack of reward (i know you get prestige and redboxes but seriously THATS NOT A BIG REWARD) made me not repeat danger missions after get my 45k of prestige. im still waiting for a new T3 Boss (preferably a Beast Boss to have good T3 levels for Beast related materials).

-Easy Enemies: i remember when i joined to this game around june 2011, enemies were really interesting and fun to fight... but then there was a bunch of noobs players that cry because they cant beat a T3 monsters just because they never learned how to fight monster in T1 and T2 since they were just... barbarians hacking and slashing.. so OOO have to nerf monsters making them just a plain joke to fight...

-Lack of ways to solve a puzzle: when i started to play this game and saw my first puzzle (place the statue in the button) i thought the game would have more interesting puzzles like Zelda games... how wrong i was.. there should be fun puzzles to solve to get rewards.. no big ones but something that make you put a bit of time to solve it and gather few crowns, heat, or whatever thing give you the treasure boxes (i know there secrets in this game.. but its not enought to make interesting a level.

-Lack of new levels: nature levels like snarbolax are pretty fun to explore and a candy eye for your sight, hell even craddle surface its pretty interesting and cool for you eye to enjoy.. wish there would be more nature levels in spiral, how about temple like levels? sadly i dont think we dont going to have those..

OOO just like to make fancy and cosmetic Stuff... to gather more money and funds their other games like puzzle pirates or Dr Who World MMo... because they are so good making puzzles for those games... i know there coming battle sprite update... but they are just earlier missions for new players and the most probably thing we going to have recycled levels... so nothing new in levels. and only a pet for those people who asked for them and keep them calm down..

we going to have Dust bunnies, Gel Drops, Grave Scarab but honestly.. i dont expect a lot of them. probably nothing interesting or not worthy to fight like drones. i mean Small enemies to be like "stuffing" for the levels. but nothing big like a new enemies with new attacks patterns would be...

i dont expect something big for Spiral Anniversary either... prolly just the same event without something interesting.

Regarding big REAL bosses. I think OOO does have all but one monster type covered: Vanaduke (Fiend, even though in game he has his own type), Roarmulus Twins (Mecha), Jelly King (Jellies), Snarbolax (Beast), Seerus (Gremlin) and Margurel (Undead).

What we are missing is a Swarm boss. (Unlockable by Echo Stones, hopefully?)

If this game was a piece of bread, it's stale now.

Because after you do many shadow runs, T3 runs, have almost all the weapons you could need, have a ton of accessories and have crowns and CE but no reason to spend it nor any reason to get more; well the game gets boring.

The end game content doesn't last that much.

new content is new content.

New UI will bring older people back to the game and it WILL give it a slight edge. Can't wait to see what it looks like in SL and FSC ^ ^

And after getting optimal gears you gets accessories or secondary sets (gunning set for me, maybe bomber set for you?), that's pretty much how the game goes...

^(About the new UI comment)

Not really, if you see the discussion topic about the new UI there is a whole lot of mixed reactions going on - I don't care that much about it actually, a new UI isn't going to make me play more the game (like, almost nothing)

In fact, I may most likely log in to check the new enemies on a status strata in Arcade, say "oh that is nice" and leave again.

I wish though I would have had that minimap improvement a while ago, so many deaths from surprise devilite debris...

I left

Well, I left quite a while ago due not just to computer issues but.. The game was getting boring.
The same thing, every time, over and over and over. The same levels, the same missions. The RSS bomb change was idiotic. Content takes forever to come along in this game. Too many damn promos that are just recolors, and events that are so grindy you have to play for several hours each day to get close to what you want. I am only staying for my awesome guild, because they are cool people. I just chat with them :/

Although... I admit that when content actually comes along after months of waiting, it is always awesome.

a few reasons

the game gets wayyy too repetive. I did FSC 10 for FoV, a sword I killed myself with more than once. I occasionally come back to check out a few updates, but those get boring soon too. This game is so farming based, and I ATE HATE HATE farming in every game.
Another reason is that, to be honest, I wasnt content with the energy. CE prices jump up every year, really, and I spent all my CE on crafting, and suddenly, poof, back to farming crowns. I'm also getting into other games, and I kinda failed to like it anymore. I still drestroy the forums, but I hardly play the game anymore.

-Finished the game easily
-Have nothing to do
-Attention-seeker
-Endless crown farming

I have a love/hate relationship with this game...

I've quited a few times already (well, more like extended breaks), mostly over the same thing: lack of content after getting to tier 3 and some really dumb changes the dev team makes.

After you've done Vana so much and tried the Shadow Lairs, there's almost nothing else to do other then getting accessories and rolling UV; which a care very little for. If you have a good guild, I can totally see that extending your attention but not much and I cant say much for LD since I hate that mode with all my hate...

Which is a shame, since I absolutely fell in love with this game the first time I saw it, from the gameplay to the art and the look. Hell, I picked up 3D modeling thanks to this game! I've tried to force myself to play more but the only thing that works for me anymore is trying new play styles or weapons :gunning held my attention for a good 2 months and just recently I've decided to try bombing and found it a blast (no pun intended); getting all the mist bombs felt rewarding (except Stagger Storm...).

But even then, that will get boring again, just as before, because it feels like there's nothing to use it on except the tired same levels (that includes clockwork runs) and I'll end up taking another extended break... thou the new ugly as sin UI might just make me finally jump ship unless an uber big patches with like new bosses, weapon balances or more levels/monsters start occurring soon.

I prefer the bombs that teleport to the enemy ship and cause fires, so good. My panic option is when boarded - everyone runs to the med room and open the rest of the ship to space... and wow. The enemy keeps on truckin for a good 5 minutes, they dont give a F about oxygen!

Fire bombs are great too! All the bombs are pretty neat, better then most missiles by the last few sectors. And man, I've tried that panic strategy with but it has back fired twice: While everyone was in the med bay a breaching robot landed in my oxygen room and no one managed to fix it before dying, the other time was by breaching missile to the medbay while everyone was on it.
