Help for my first 5* setup

I just started to craft 5 star items.
Since I just started the process, I do not have the resources to make various, specialized weapon sets.
So I am aiming for a general-purpose loadout that is quite good for all damage types just for now. I want to have two swords, one gun, and one bomb, with the emphasis on the swords, since I use them the most.

2 swords: HELP??! too many swords to choose. Maybe leviathan with divine avenger?
1 gun: peacemaker, since it is good for swordsman?
1 bomb: nitronome/ash/shivermist?

Armor: snarb/vog/skolver? which one?
shield: probably barbarous thorn

Help appreciated.thanks

I have a detailed sword guide written for people in your situation. It discussed all of the swords, mentions sidearm guns and bombs, and treats armor too. Maybe it will help.

A key point is damage type. Once you're using two swords, you probably want them to be of two different damage types, and neither one of them normal. So I vote against Leviathan.

An elemental gun is a good idea. There are six choices. Search Google for "spiral knights forum elemental gun" and read threads about them. The short version is:
* Argent: Easy to use, decent damage, bad charge attack.
* Polaris: Easy to use, decent damage, big knockback.
* Nova: Harder to use, but higher potential damage in the hands of an experienced user.
* Storm, Magma, Hail: Like Nova, but trade some damage for status.
My personal recommendation is Nova or Storm.

Made some progress...

Okay. After reading the guide, I narrowed my choices a bit but came up with two major options.

Option 1: 2 sword, one gun, one bomb
Option 2: 3 sword, one gun

In the case of 3 sword, I can have 1 elemental, one piercing, and one shadow.
I would go with divine avenger/combuster, barbarous thorn blade, and acheron.
In the case of 2 swords, I am really not sure :(

I am also not sure why the nova or storm drivers are good? I always thought peacemaker was best for swordsman.
Still split between nitronome, ash, and shivermist for bomb.
And since snarbolax armor gives maximum damage bonus it is better than vog? I think?

thanks

Processing Thoughts of You Always

The AP 'best for swordsman' thing is a myth.
AP has high mobility, large clip and fast firing rate, but each bullet is fairly low damage by itself and you need to keep up a high firing rate in order to do a lot of damage. Conversely, the Drivers have mediocre mobility, a clip of two and average firing rate, but the bullets can ricochet up to two times and the charge splits into four separate bullets that can bounce another two times. This makes it readily able to take out turrets in a single shot, or rapidly eliminate mobs from a distance. (AP is also quite expensive to get, and the charge isn't especially useful in most situations.) It would really depend on your playstyle.

Snarbolax is a Shadow Lair armour. It is therefore quite difficult to get, especially if you don't already have an appropriate armour for running the Lair. Vog is therefore probably a better choice to start off with.
Your swords look fine. Your bombs also look fine.

I would get Electron/Graviton

I would get Electron/Graviton Vortex instead of Nitro/Ash/Shiver

It sucks enemies into the bomb and you charge a brandish or swing a sealed sword.

Then KABOOOM!

Every monster in the bomb is dead.

agree

If you're into swords, then you will eventually want to have three swords (piercing, elemental, and shadow), but you never need to carry all of them at once. Consider just equipping the two that are most relevant to the level, along with one gun (often elemental, but not always), and one bomb.

You mentioned that you're trying to do all of this cheaply, without crafting multiple specialized sets. Consider maintaining just three weapon slots. Start working on an elemental gun, piercing sword, and shadow sword. And maybe a bomb, if you like. Bombs are fun. Then add more weapon options, including an elemental sword, later.

Aureate has explained why the alchemers outperform Argent pretty well. When people say that Argent is a good sidearm for sworders, what they really mean is that Argent is easy to use. They're assuming that a sworder isn't interested in really learning his gun very well. If that describes you, then go for Argent; it's not bad. Or go for Polaris. But go for alchemers if you are willing to make an effort to use guns well.

As my sword guide and Aureate mention, Snarbolax armor is hard to get. It can be crafted only in the Shadow Lairs. Surviving a Shadow Lair is not easy, even if you have 5-star gear and a decent party. Alternatively, you can buy the armor unbound from someone, but that is insanely expensive and not gratifying. This is why you should focus on Vog Cub and Skolver (and maybe Chaos) for your first sworder armor.

thanks

Thanks so much for all the advice. I will plan to get on three swords I mentioned above as soon as possible (all different damage types). I will also try for the nova driver (the extra damage seems to make it better than the other drivers). But I have two last questions :P

1. I have acquired a snarby set from older brother who stopped playing after two years (with much begging). Should I just stick with this or should I try to get either vog or skolver?
2. If I want a DPS bomb rather than a status bomb, should I go nitronome or ash of agni?
Thanks.

@Bopp: You seem to be VERY active in the community. Are you getting paid by three rings? :) Or is it just out of personal interest?

If you have the Snarbolax set, then just roll with it. The shadow defense is more valuable than Skolver's piercing defense. The only issue is that you won't have any fire or elemental protection for Firestorm Citadel. One piece of Vog Cub might help you out there. But try it with Snarbolax.

For DPS bombs, the most popular choices are Dark Briar Barrage (piercing, no knockback), Nitronome (like a normal version of DBB, with high knockback), and Dark Retribution (shadow, no knockback). Ash of Agni delivers nice DPS against crowds. Voltaic Tempest delivers nice DPS against tight crowds, because shock damages nearby monsters.

Yes, I post a lot. I like this game. No, I don't work for Three Rings. Cheers.

yay. thanks

Ok. I came down to the snarbolax armor (which probalby will help in future shadow lair runs, which are a long way off :(. ). I also decided to go with the nitronome since it deals balanced damage for all types. But thank you all for being so supportive and helpful. I am sure that all your advice will be very helpful in my play :)
