The obtrusiveness of the shield health bar is one of my biggest issues with the new UI. Here's a simple idea: when the shield is at full health, hide the shield bar so that it doesn't show. That way we get the info of knowing our shield health when we care, and it goes away when we don't.
how about we say that seeing the colour around your shield barrier was a subtle yet excellent indicator already?
