I'm writing this out of two assumption:

  1. the design of the new HUD has touchscreen operation in mind. This mean Three Rings could be actively exploring the possibility of porting SK to smart devices;
  2. there are profit to be had by targeting full time workers who want to do causal gaming during business hours on their smart devices. e.g. Square Enix's Kaku Sensei Million Arthur is a huge hit in Asia. Three Rings could learn from this model and take this opportunity to make profit.

Implication:

  1. porting SK to touchscreen is not the right (and profitable) direction. Touchscreen, while has it advantage, is not suitable for an action game like SK. What is worse is that you may end up not pleasing users on PC and smart devices, and they both move on to something else. That's a risk you cannot ignore;
  2. SK's artworks, however, can be easily ported into the form of cards and make it into a F2P, PvP type of card games for these smart devices. Then you can fully exploit the advantage of touch screen, without risking displeasing customers from two markets;
  3. Three Rings should investigate this emerging market further, targeting full time workers who grow up with 16 Bits RPG, who don't want to spend a lot of time, have access to smart devices and enjoy looking at cute, cartoon characters for stress relieve.

Yes, we realize that OOOs would benefit from something like this, but how would it work?

It could work like any other card game, Health, Defense(shield/armor), Elemental power, Shadow power, etc. They could add in normal monsters(Such as slimes) And also major bosses. Healing cards, equip cards, anything you would want to call these. I Myself consider this a great idea.

I don't know how it works. I saw my Asian friend played Kaku Sensei Million Arthur on his iPhone 5 and it looks like it's a party based PvP game (with his cards as members). I'm not saying Three Rings should copy Million Arthur, but could consider their model as a possible revenue model for a SK spinoff.

Ian and Boswick would probably welcome this idea because their art works should be very portable to smart devices (both low and high res). So Nick just need to figure out how exactly they can make money out of it. e.g. link your CE account in SK to the SK card game and use it to revive your fallen cards. (So like how LD works.) Prize boxes give you accessories in SK (or Sk prize boxes give you cards).

What I believe would be a win-win scenario to both Three Rings and us, is that they do not need to butcher the existing UI to fit touchscreen operation, while able to attract a broader, more profitable crowd of new customers. (The said market segment have money because they have full time job. They just don't have time to spend that money.) Plus, you don't run into the risk of butchering SK, pissing off existing milk cows (us) while fail to attract smart devices customers.

TL ; DR. Don't pull a Steve Ballmer with Windows 8. There is a much better and profitable solution and Square Enix is already doing it.
