Some Questions for Gunners

So I have a couple of questions I want to ask gunners.

Why do you use valiance?
Pretty early on, it is drummed into people's heads that normal damage is suboptimal. Yet there is 5* gunners with valiance, and they actually use it. Why? Is it for utility? Is it for lockdown only?

Do gunners use side-arms?
Bombers generally use a sword for knockback or a gun, and swordsmen generally carry a gun (polaris). Do gunners use a sidearms? What would they be? I hardly ever meet gunners in the clockworks, so I have no clue.

Not much to say.

A Shivermist Buster is of some use for a gunner. Mostly in Danger Missions. Usual loadout is just two guns though. If you don't mind non-standard specialized equipment, a Cutter of some sort will save you more than once from Greaver swarms. Guns are not very efficient at keeping you safe from those things whereas a quick blade strike will reliably keep them from biting your face off. This applies especially if you aren't prepared for the attack and get swarmed. You're done for if all you have is a Magnus at that point.

knockback

When I play pure gunner, I certainly use non-normal guns. But Valiance does have some nice features. The knockback is good, and the bullet speed is good, and the damage is okay. That's not enough to make me equip it, when I have multiple 5-star guns equipped, though.

I've seen gunners play with normal swords such as Leviathan (the "default" sword) or Sudaruska (for knocking back enemies in emergencies). I've also seen them carry support bombs, such as Shivermist or Voltaic.

The Valiance has some reasonable damage, and it fires quickly, and knocks enemies around consistently (unlike Pulsar, which needs to expand first and has pigslow bullets). I don't generally have enough weapon slots to bring it in PvE, though, but it does do a good job at interrupting enemies in PvP as well as being a great weapon when coupled with deathmarks.

Swords are good for dealing with enemies that like to rush you - say, Greavers and so forth, which move very fast. They also generally have quite a bit of knockback.
I like to carry around a Dread Venom Striker, which is fast, inflicts poison, does reasonable damage against all monsters, can be used to break down blocks and minerals very quickly, and has a moderate amount of knockback. It suits my playstyle, but other people might prefer heavier weapons, such as the Troika or Calibur lines, for knocking enemies away from them in a pinch.

Valiance is fantastic for LD. I have no idea why people use it in CW.

Gunners do not need sidearms. Period.

In my experience, they are less likely than swordies to bring bombs with them.

As for greavers, just remember to aim at their shadows and not the model itself and you shouldn't have a problem with them. But if you still do, consider bringing an elemental gun. They are more forgiving weapons. If you still have trouble, suicide...or bring a toothpick.

I don't know why people are suggesting cutters. They are fun to use but terrible.

Atacii.

Cutters are very practical against Greavers. More practical than Flourishes in my experience. All it takes to lose your quick swipe attack is having your shield broken and you absolutely cannot rely on having the upper hand when it comes to enemies with high mobility and erratic patterns.

Knockback FTW!

The Knockback on the valiance may be small but it is still useful. It is especially useful when switchshooting with alchemers or callahans. They save your life and do neutral damage.

I use Grintovec -Triglav- as sidearm. It is for mechas, greavers, stuff and slamming contests with Trojans. I don't have any autoguns.

Well, alchemers are pretty standard, they mostly deal status, you can move while firing, bouncing bullets increase damage by miles and you're pretty safe to use them.
But they're slow.
Play it safe, you're slow.
I use both my voltech and pepperbox equally, no real one emerges ontop.

If we have a mob of critters, shoot it with a pepperbox.
if we have lunging zombies, run between them with a volt or charge pepper for knockback.
If we have devilites... I'm screwed, but pepper can scare them and a volt bullet catches them after the dodge.
gremlins, pepper 'em in the face then run.
jellies, slow 'em down with volt and strafe.
wolvers, scare them with pepper and hit with my old vile striker I keep for beast and gremlin levels.
Kats, Volt all the way.
greavers, pepper and most probably lose health or volt and probably lose health.
trojans, pepper their backs till they blister.
cromalisks, I don't even bother gunning these lot, I use my vile.
gun puppies/polyps/howlitsers pepper them up close with a charge or shoot from afar with my volt.
lumbers, charge and blast with my pepper.
Retrode/scuttlebot, run circles around with my volt, no literally run around them in a circle while shooting.
Mecha knights, the only way to address these is with a charged pepper, but even then it's haphazardous.
Giant Lichens, a few peppery charges to the face
Mortafires, these guys aren't hard, just annoying and slow.
ghostmane stalkers, fire my pepper in all directions.

Sigh.. I think that's it, that's about 7 month's with this new set by the way, it ain't some picnic.

So, where's the sidearm there?

Even though I'm mainly a swordsman, I still find myself relying on my cyro and antigua for things my nightblade can't hit well, such as my hated foes: Devilites and Greavers, which are the two reasons I want a Piercing antigua line (really, why should I have to pick between two damage types I don't need?)
