Quick question about character design...

It's not another rant about the color's you can choose, so don't worry.

It's actually about the concept art for the characters themselves. More specifically the feet/leg area. I have no idea if there's an actual style name or anything, so I have dubbed them 'peg legs'. Yet, I feel weird calling them that, so is there anyone who knows what the actual style is called?

I'm trying to get back into drawing (some fan art for this game XD) and it throws me off to call the foot/leg style such a silly name.

Also, is there any official concept art hanging around the internet or have just not looked hard enough yet?

The design...

I don't know if I would call it 'chibi' or 'super-deformed' but it is reminiscent of that style. If you want to see the work of the artist, you should check out his website. http://threepanelsoul.com/

I have been reading Ian and Matt's comics for years and it was through their site that I actually found out about the game. Needless to say, Spiral Knights is everything I wanted out of a game.

"peg legs"

The only time I've seen 'peg legs' is when people have spiral plate mail line. The reason I know this is because I have boosted plate mail.

Yep

Ooh, a new comic to read. Yay!

I don't believe I've found a flaw with game yet. The character designs, monsters... Hell, the clockworks themselves make me want to explore all day. It's such an interesting game!

Hmm...

I pretty much mean when the foot is the same width as the leg (I think), kinda like a peg. In other armor, there isn't much extending out past the leg itself, even with the little leg guards on them.

Well, this IS a game from the

Well, this IS a game from the same company that made Puzzle Pirates. It's not surprising that we've got peg legs everywhere. Yarr, loot and plunder the depths.

...On a more serious note, it might have been an intentional design decision to reduce polygon count. A top-down game places the focus squarely on the head and upper body; there's little to gain from adding a bunch of extra graphics requirements for proper feet, plus the peg legs fit in with the "almost like a chibi" art style.

Oi... :P

I didn't even make that connection till you posted it. XD

That sounds like it would make sense. Feet are unnecessary... O_O; Whatever the reason is, it's a desirable design and like I said, even made me want to get back into drawing. Thanks for the help, everyone!

WHERE DOES THE KNIGHT END AND THE FOOT BEGIN?

"I pretty much mean when the foot is the same width as the leg"

Cankles?

Seriously though,

They do have little feet, it's just that the armor is so big it stops you from being able to see them in the 'battle' stance (and the top down perspective doesn't help too much either).

If you type '/sit', usually in that sitting position you will see their little feet poke out.

Oh cool...

I shall try that out the next time I play.

lol, cankles. XD
