I was wondering what the best sword in spiral knights was, is it the fang of vog, avenger or Faust or the warmaster rocket hammer? I was just wondering what I should get for a 5* sword
best sword
As Thinslayer said, there is no best sword, and only some of the weapons or sword are better for different occasions. For Vanaduke, I would probably take a Blitz Needle, An Elemental sword (Voltedge prefferably) and a piercing sword (for trojans). But there is no "Best Sword". If a sword had all abilities, like shadow damage, fire dmg, freeze dmg, and shock dmg, that would probs be the best sword.
Thinslayer has already linked to my sword guide (thanks), which gives my best answers.
And both posters have quite correctly stated that there is no best sword. The items in this game are not perfectly balanced, but they're not that unbalanced either.
To address your question more directly, look at these four swords first:
1. Combuster or Voltedge
2. Warmaster Rocket Hammer
3. Acheron
4. Final Flourish or Barbarous Thorn Blade
Divine avenger is the best sword out of all the ones you list.
Of all the swords the Combuster is a good one to look at too.
The game basically forces rock paper scissors onto you with the option to always "tie", where ties work out in your favor.
Because of this, there is no "best" sword.
All you will need for swords: Combuster , Final flourish and Acheron, ANYONE WHO DISAGREES WITH ME IS A MAGGOT.

But seriously now, forget about normal damage swords, they're just mediocre vs everything.
Everything except for Cutter line, flourish status variants and Calibur line are good swords. The best over all sword has to be Acheron with its insane raw damage, with combuster comes second, I personally prefer my glacius, it is a healthy combination of good alpha damage as well as crowd control.
I can vouch for the hammer
it usually kills turrets with the swing then dash or full combo in a 3 or less person party
the flinch rate seems to work most on turrets too
Calibur isn't a horrible line, it deals fair damage, the charge can ruin turrets, trojans, deadnaughts, anything up against a wall or in a corner, and shielded menders.
Cutter line is nice too, WHB has a wonderful flinch rate on the charge and respectable damage. DVS is one of the few and easily accessible poison blades.
Troika lines are meant to be crowd control with crowd control statuses.
Status flourishes are fairly nice too, stun makes pierce weak monsters even easier, and fire can help against monsters that resist pierce (the "Oops I brought a flourish to a construct or jelly level").
Most of the time it is best to focus on weapons that let you cover damage types, only if you don't know where you are going bring a normal weapon.
I agree with Holy Nightmare. These weapon lines aren't inherently bad, they're just inherently worse than other things available. If there's any bad sword, it's Winmillion due to how it interacts with Mechas, Wolvers, etc.
A 16-MHz 80286 PC is a "bad" computer (in 2014), in that it's much worse than other computers you can get.
The stalk on which brussels sprouts grow is "bad" food, in that it's much worse than other food you can get.
Wild Hunting Blade is a "bad" sword, in that it's much worse than other swords you can get.
Well, my idea of what makes a weapon bad is how well it's able to preform in the game. Not compared to other weapons, just how well it works when using it. Status Flourishes, Cutters, and Caliburs may not be the best but you can without a doubt get very far with them.
The readers on these forums understand that almost any weapon can be used to play the game. When we tell them that a weapon is "bad", we don't need to add the disclaimer, "Of course, it's not impossible to play with this weapon." They know that, right?
Well, I'd go as far as to say that it's pretty viable to play through the game with some of the discussed weapons, not just "not impossible". They aren't the most efficient weapons but at least Leviathan and Dread Venom Striker are reliable and useful through the entire game, even if they aren't always the best.
All the weapons are viable in certain situations, it's just that some situations are more rare than others.
Fang of Vog is a great weapon with exceptional power, it's just that it's not very often you run up on a Deadnaught to use it on.
WHB has a flinch heavy charge but with Chaos cloak teammates they don't need the time it gives to charge up weapons as much.
The Furious Flamberge is more forgiving to knights that bring piercing weapons to the wrong place, but good knights know what to bring to levels.
The problem with the "bad" blades is that the chances of coming across a situation in which they are desirable is very low, most players use Brandishes and learn to cope in situations in which there is a better blade. The problem is that Brandishes have enough power to make having them in the wrong place much less of an issue.
The "best sword" does not exist. There are "good swords," swords that are "better for some situations than others," and there are "inferior swords," but there are no "best swords."

For an immediate answer:
If you want to have one sword to be "the best," you may be looking for the Leviathan Blade. It's kind of a mediocre sword really, but it's neutral against everything and has a great charge attack.
Final Flourish is generally recognized as the best piercing sword for its greater damage and rage-craftableness, compared to its 3 cousins.
Combuster is generally recognized as the best elemental sword and the best brandish-type sword for its deadly charge attack, which can often OHKO many weaker enemies.
Acheron is generally recognized as the best shadow sword for the same reasons as Combuster.
The Divine Avenger has a very deadly charge attack, and its primary attacks are remarkably strong. It used to be one of the most common swords brought to FSC, and may still be.
The Fang of Vog has one of the best charge attacks. It's so powerful that some players nickname it the "nuke."
The Warmaster Rocket Hammer is indisputably the best weapon for dispatching turrets at close range, thanks to its deadly dash attack.
