I know the title is stupid...
I went to a beast-themed level. It was on depth 21. I had no piercing weapon so I equipped Cold Iron Vanquisher (5*) and Silent Nightblade (4*). The Brandish was dealing 6 MORE damage than CIV vs. beasts (SN-167 dmg,1st hit ; CIV-161 dmg,1st hit--- but I'm not sure). I had Sword damage bonus:Low (from Ash Tail coat), the Silent Nightblade had no UVs.
Leviathan Blade deals more damage vs. beasts than CIV and Silent Nightblade.OK. BUT what happens when the SN becomes ACHERON? What happens when that thing can Freeze (Glacius)/Shock (Voltedge)/inflict Fire (Combuster) ?
Big disbalance. CIV can just cover Acheron's weakness vs. Undead :/ Why...

The difference between 4* and 5* weapons at depth 21 is close to 0. Upgrading from 4* to 5* is often not worth the ridiculous asking price even in stratum 6. This is why missions and 5* Hall of Heroes was introduced.

apples to oranges, and times have changed

Well, you're comparing shadow swords to normal swords, and 4-star swords to 5-star swords. But I basically agree, that CIV is underpowered.

CIV and WHB are holdovers from earlier days, when damage bonuses against specific monster types were more valuable. There were no damage trinkets, Barbarous Thorn Shield, or Snarbolax armor. The only ways to get blanket damage bonuses were Skolver and some gunner and bomber armors that were weaker than they are today. Now that we have so many ways to get blanket damage bonuses, the monster-specific bonuses of CIV and WHB are less valuable. Both of those swords need a buff.

By the way. If you're solo, it takes exactly as many combos for Levi to kill a Lumber as it does for a CIV. However, the same holds true for zombies. The only difference is that Levi needs one less hit in general on the very deepest depth, D28, while CIV needs one less for zombies there.

Basically, if you wanna pick CIV over Levi becaus it has pretty chains or if you wanna pick Acheron because it looks like a kawaii sugoe japanese katana sword it really doesn't make much of an effective difference. There'll be a hit or two extra in a full party maybe.

Of much more concern are things like Gran Faust having 5% more damage than Faust at depth 28 while having a severely nerfed charge time and Big Angry Bomb having a 15% damage boost in trade for a 100% charge time and fuse time increase.

You alright?

Okay Zeddy, the gran faust vs faust IS a issue but the big angry bomb gains stun, which I have to say (after running the royal jelly palace with a BAB in the party) is more useful than you think.
