1) does shadow defense work if i have the dread skelly on as a costoom?
2) is "dead" a good status to learn to inflict if youre a shadow defender
Ask a Shadow Defender anything
![Trats-Romra's picture Trats-Romra's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_kn-cob2.png)
I like swords, guns and bombs, but guns>swords=bombs.
I like to be balanced knight. Ready to all situations.
I normally use a cobalt helm and a gunsliger sash. Sometimes, Wolver line.
Favorite shields: Defender line and Owlite Shield line.
Favorite weapons: Polaris, Blaster, Nova Driver, FF and Blast Bomb Line.
I like fast and medium weapons and I value a good defense.
What class am I?
Other questions: I don't like how the Shadow Defender looks. Is there another armor with good shadow defense?
![Trats-Romra's picture Trats-Romra's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_kn-cob2.png)
Actually, i don't have many problems with undead. They are easier to escape than devilities. The devilities are my main problem. I thought at Seraphic line. Dou you think that is a good choice? Although the weaker defense?
![Zeddy's picture Zeddy's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_kn-cyclopse.png)
@Fehzor
Have you given consideration to putting shadow max UVs on Ironmight? You can be a shadow samurai!
@Aureous
I've noticed that Kat Hiss Cowl looks pretty good combined with Dread Skelly.
Fun fact: I never crafted my armour from alchemy machines. When you see me wearing bones and skulls, those are the bones and skulls of my fallen enemies. I like to display them as trophies from my hunt, so usually I'll be wearing at least three layers of Dread Skelly (+ an extra skull as a chalice from which I drink the blood of my enemies).
@Blaze-Breaker
In practicality, it has been shown to be about as effective, but the metal Gods will be very displeased with you unless your costume armour is a black trench coat about 5 meters in length and a hair just as long dyed in pure black and optimized for headbanging.
Spraypaints of flames are allowed. Especially if you actually set the spraypaint on fire.
@Trats-Romra
Versatile knights are cobalt knights. It's right there on your avatar!
If adorning yourselves with awesome, spiky, metal skulls is not to your liking, I would highly recommend the pretty dress and tiara offered by the Valkyrie set.
![Fehzor's picture Fehzor's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_mob-snipe.png)
You drink the blood of your fallen enemies... after you shadow defend them to death with your empty weapon slots?
![Fleet-Miss-Gun's picture Fleet-Miss-Gun's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_kn-cob3.png)
I wear full elemental defender armor.
My favorite weapon is elemental weapons.
Question: What happen if a sneaky lumber kills you?
![Zeddy's picture Zeddy's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_kn-cyclopse.png)
@Milkman
The obvious answer to this one would be the haunted or ghostly aura. I prefer fire aura, myself, and am eagerly awaiting a Triglav reskin that looks like a battle axe or an 11-string el-guitar.
@Fehzor
Just because I did not personally fell them, does not mean they were not my enemies.
Our team's specialist has dibs on any virulisk and salamander carcasses we come across, but I get my fair share of enemy skulls myself. I'm not told how much of it, but I assume of course assume the largest one, seeing how shadow defence is the most important role in a party.
@Fleet-Miss-Gun
I recognize a trick question when I read one! Lumbers aren't very sneaky at all!
Should a lumber despite all odds somehow get a swing in at me and the team's designated elemental defender is absent, I expect his arm will be lodged stuck in the various spikes protruding from my suit. I may not be armed, but I always carry about a canister of oil and a lighter just in case I come across buildings dedicated to the enemies of The Metal Gods.
![Infernoburner's picture Infernoburner's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_art-grem.png)
What's the best weapon for "defending"? Is it the allmighty Trollaris, the rage enforcer of all Skolvers?
Do I qualify as a Shadow Defender with Black Kat and Snarbolax Coat while also being offensive at times?
![Fleet-Miss-Gun's picture Fleet-Miss-Gun's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_kn-cob3.png)
And this is now my favorite thread on the forum.
(Anyway, why have an shadow defender when you have a guardian?)
![Zeddy's picture Zeddy's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_kn-cyclopse.png)
@Infernoburner
A shield, of course! Until you get good enough with your shield, you can keep enemies at bay with the ASI heavy hatchet you get from missions.
A defender is not offensive, they're defensive >:[
@Fleet-Miss-Gun
Guardians wear plate mail, and they're normal defenders. Everyone knows you don't need normal defenders in tier 3!
![Usevnsevnsixfivfor's picture Usevnsevnsixfivfor's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_kn-sam2.png)
How does a Shadow Defender like you solo Ice Queen Palace? Slimes deal piercing, lumbers deal elemental, and silkwings don't attack. Also, lumbers don't do damage to slimes.
Edit: Also, will the Black Kat Cowl be useful for a shadow defender when MSI gets a buff?
![Fehzor's picture Fehzor's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_mob-snipe.png)
"When MSI gets a buff"
Someone's feeling optimistic about something other than shadow defense...
![Gent-Soopakoopa's picture Gent-Soopakoopa's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_mob-gremlin.png)
Ok...so you just, like, walk in front of shadow projectiles in order to ensure that they
don't do any damage to the guy assigned to walk in front of elemental projectiles?
I'm not sure if I want to be a defender....
![Cmeresweetheart's picture Cmeresweetheart's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_mob-boss.png)
How long is your PAINIS?
...You said anything.
![Fleet-Miss-Gun's picture Fleet-Miss-Gun's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_kn-cob3.png)
Why would I choose a shadow defender over shoot em up everything guy?
![Zeddy's picture Zeddy's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_kn-cyclopse.png)
@Usevnsevnsixfivfor
As a shadow defender, I am of course a team player. As such, the only kind of solo I do is guitar solos. When doing Ice Queen Palace, I let the team's piercing defender do his job.
The Black Kat Cowl is a piece of junk. I'm a shadow defender, not a shadow run-away-like-a-little-girl-er.
@Gent-Soopakoopa
Well the forces of darkness aren't going to defend themselves! I could not imagine a team working without a designated shadow defender. Doesn't every party have one?
@Cmeresweetheart
Well, that depends on the time of day, whether or not I'm happy to see you, current temperature and whether or not you are including the spikes protruding from it in the total length.
@Fleet-Miss-Gun
Usually you pick the shadow defender if you don't want to die from shadow damage. If that's okay with you, go ahead and choose the shoot-em-up guy.
*facepalm*
anyway wuts better dread skelly set or snarby?
![Fehzor's picture Fehzor's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_mob-snipe.png)
What do you do when there isn't any shadow damage present on the level while the appropriate defender is defending against the damage type on that level?
![Zeddy's picture Zeddy's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_kn-cyclopse.png)
Soon, shadow defenders will be able to cave skulls in by the power of their shields!
They laughed at me. They called me mad! But who's got a purple ribcage lodged in their eye socket now, huh? I believe that would be you! Ahahahahahaaaa!
@Fehzor
I shield-bump.
![Usevnsevnsixfivfor's picture Usevnsevnsixfivfor's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_kn-sam2.png)
I ment that if two slags are about to kill two of your teams Strikers, then Zeddy (Shdw defender) would shield bump one slag rn with beefed up MSI, then shield bump the other slag. Without the MSI, you would only help the first striker. That's what i mean.
![Midnight-Dj's picture Midnight-Dj's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_kn-val2.png)
I am minight DJ,and i am just like u zeddy. Except I wear the valkyrie armor(as u can see from my forum avatar), now here is my question, how much does the skelly set protect more than the valkyrie? I take 4.5 bars of damage at depth24 upon getting bitten by a Kat, +1 bar if got hit by a zombie, -1.5 from a devilite's normal bullet, the damage bonus seems to add 60 extra damage to my polaris when I hit the devilite at depth 24+. So yeah, which one is better? valkyrie or skelly?
Its status resitance against poison reduces the poison status from 9 seconds to 5 seconds , reduce the curse from 40 to 23 seconds ( $$$ ). The fire weakness, however, increase the fire status by 4 seconds( 9 seconds in total ), this weakness can reduce my health by almost 10 bars! To counter this weakness, i wear a divine mantle to cancel out the effect of the fire yet still kick devilites' butt hard. So, whcih status resistant is better? Valkyrie or Skelly?
P.S. CIV is the worst sword i ever had, despite it is leviathan blade's undead hating cousin, it is damage is just so underwhelming....but the charge attack is pretty cool...can hit slags 3 times if i used it right when it is about to attack. (400X3=1200 damage at depth 24+ FATALITY!!!!)
![Zeddy's picture Zeddy's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_kn-cyclopse.png)
@Midnight-Dj
It's hard to answer your questions accurately, as research into damage and defence is incomplete.
Although Skelly offers no damage bonus, it does have more shadow defence than Valkyrie as well as resistance to two common statuses where Valkyrie has a resistance to a pretty rare status (curse) and a weakness to a common and very dangerous status (fire). Such is the price you pay for being on the offensive. Skelly is equally good against fiends and undead while Valkyrie loses its main benefit if you're only fighting undead, as well.
![Heavy-Dragon's picture Heavy-Dragon's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_mob-chrom3.png)
also classified as a shadow defender, since it defends the shadow lairs?
For that matter, are you from the shadow lairs?
ARE YOU THE SWARM?!
![Kathrine-Dragon's picture Kathrine-Dragon's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_kn-sca3.png)
Would you suggest that a shadow defender use the Gorgomega both as a primary defense and as a solid offense in knocking away enemies from your unaware allies?
![Zeddy's picture Zeddy's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_kn-cyclopse.png)
Yes. Stun+Freeze means you can take a decent T3 Silversap hit with it, which is a feat that no other stock shield in the game is capable of. This makes the Gorgomega the ultimate defensive shield almost tied with Volcanic Plate. Gorgomega obviously wins because shadow defence.
We're lacking shields for Vilewoods and Electreants, and I hope shadow-defending variants of these will arrive soon.
On the offensive side; the Gorgomega is very useful for quicking breaking through blocks, boxes, and minerals without the need of a sword or handgun. The secondary explosion of the shield bash also has a decent radius, allowing for a frankly nice amount of crowd control.
5/5 would craft again.

Great Lord Zeddy, my liege,
I just made an awesome discovery while searching for more shadow defense after already obtaining a full Dread Skelly set with max Shadow UVs!
I discovered that there are helpers called 'Battle Sprites' and they grant another Shadow Defense bonus. Of course I took the Maskeraith for its shadow appearence.
But not only this: My Maskeraith proves even more worthy over this: It can actually deal damage to enemies, poision weaklings in my way and lowers their Shadow Damage output to make my Shadow Defense even more superior and it can drain enemies health until it is nothing but a lost soul seeking for an unlucky target.
Also my Skelly Shield proves to have powers beyond limitation: I can rush to enemies with my whole Shadow Defense and totally overwhelm them with a stunning and damage dealing shadow force.
By knowing this I just completed the Rojal Jelly Palace solo without weapons.
I know that this is unconventionally, but it is a breakthrough for all Shadow Defenders: We don't absolutely require other classes to complete a mission.
Abandon the other jobs, Shadow Defense rules - become a Shadow Defender before OOO nerfs this class!

I am the name giver and one of the creators of the guild Umbrae Mortis and belong to the guild Dark Hearts right now so darkness and Shadows already flow through my veins.
I may consider your guild suggestion in future though.
![Drischa's picture Drischa's picture](https://forums.spiralknights.com/sites/default/files/avatar_selection/sk_kn-demo3.png)
EDIT: You should join shard squad, as this is the home of the ultimate shadow defender Zeddy himself.
@ Zeddy
EDIT: You have already answered this so feel free to ignore it
What do you think of the new Gorgomega shadow shield? It also has freeze resistance, keeping it usable in the before-mentioned freeze-themed-battlefield situation. It also has stun resistance, which would help with the trojan slams that Blue mentioned.
The shield bash of this shield, whilst removing some durability from your own shield (Which is of course undesirable) provides a large AOE stun which could help your non-shadow defender teammates from being mauled by the shadow that they so foolishly decided to not defend against.
I'm honestly expecting a reply along the lines of "But the shield is more focused on offence due to the nature of the shield bash, which goes against the idea of being a shadow defender." But it would certainly be interesting if this new shield provided a new path for potential shadow defenders.
/salute Zeddy
Stay shadowless, shadow defenders
EDIT: Welp, in the time that I actually typed this a bunch of new stuff appeared. what I deserve for not refreshing the page.
So you wear dread skelly set all the time, but do you wear another combination as a costume from time to time?
Also, if you could actually wear the same set twice as a costume (let's say it has some accesories and you can equip a dread skelly while already wearing dread skelly) how would the double sensation of wearing dread skelly twice make you feel?
