If I choose to do a run as free-for-all, does the ruling only affect item drops, or does it affect heat and crowns as well?
Free-For-All question
round robin: don't matter wich one picks the iten/material (only itens/materials, and not crowns, heat, or pickups), the iten willl be given to the first person in a "row", and then this person will go to the end of the row. So, you don'r need to rush to an iten to get it, because you have your chance.
free-for-all: the one that get's the iten will be the one to receive it, so, if you party with a greedy knight, he will run to the itens mindlesly, and will render you without any reward.
Round Robin is flawed though. You *can* keep track of who's next at receiving an item and then take the lesser items when it's not your turn, and take the good ones when you'll get it. It's not quite fair though, since it's supposed to be a form of "random distribution", but there's always people out there who take advantage of it.
We receive numerous complaints about the free for all loot setting and given it's overall lack of use anyway we will be removing free for all and replacing it with 'random' in a future update.
Free for all works better in games where there is less lag occurring. Unfortunately, those with a faster PC and/or better internet connection will get the item in SK. Even in round robin heat, crowns and loot always flies at me because my system seems to be able to communicate with the server faster. When exploring with good friends the loot setting doesn't tend to matter as much because... well... you want to remain friends and tend not to jerk each other around.
I think a random distribution should not reveal which items you received until you exit the clockworks. This way the game could weight distribution based on relative star values so that no one feels like they got the short end. If a person leaves early they get an equal weight of the current loot pool.
Along with people abusing the current system it would be nice to have a setting where you can vote people out of a party. Otherwise it's entirely up to the party leader to make the call. Remember, you don't have to put up with an abusive person. You can always kick/ignore.
I think free for all would make more sense if the person who dealt the most damage to a monster had some kind of priority over the drops.

So the people with the weaker computers, or the bigger lag, or the issue#n would get less than the person with the better computer?
Or the people with the bigger star gear would get more stuff to upgrade their gear faster?
Or the person that uses their shield to block the enemy, or otherwise distract them, doing no damage but letting everyone else fire and kill, would get nothing for their defensive/distraction efforts?
Yep, that's pretty much it.
Obviously you wouldn't join those parties if you don't like the item distribution.
Crowns and Heat are automatically distributed to every player in the party, items are not. My best guess goes towards free-for-all only affecting item-pick ups, since affecting Heat and/or Crowns wouldn't make a lot of sense. (As it is with round-robin, every player gets a crown/heat bulb per pick-up done. If that was to change, you'd "lose" crowns/heat because only 1 player would get it?)
