A small rant on the LD Community and why it's in need of a reset from the trashy mentality it's developed.

(Disclaimer: this rant is based on my observations and participations of many LD games and players over the past several months and singles out no one in particular.)

You know, I've come to realize the more I play combat heavy single player games (things like Bioshock or pre-reboot Devil May Cry), that when it comes to methods of dispatching enemies, there are no real "noob" methods; there are only "impressive" and "more impressive." I always sort of translated this mentality to optimizing and being flashy in combat to SK (which had some amount of potential for such an approach), and when LD came out, it was really fun to experiment with things.

Methods only become an issue when you have a bunch of twits flooding chat with their overly opinionated, rage fueled, borderline simian senses of "fairness" and "skill". Not to say that there aren't issues with Lockdown functionally, but that's somewhat beside the point.

Now, I get that, in any sort of PVP gametype, there are, tragically, always a number of hyperactive pre-pubes who like to be nitpicky, trash talking imbeciles. But in LD I've noticed it becoming quite excessive and with prolonged exposure to such sub-human intellect and personalities, it's easy to get into an unnecessarily hostile mindset. Normally calm people become residually frustrated and end up arguing with morons that shouldn't be indulged to begin with. On top of that, there's simply not enough time or energy before, during, or after matches that can or should be dedicated to intelligently explaining why these screaming man children need to grow up and actually use their brains to develop TACTICS AND STRATEGIES instead of their childish little brat mouths to regurgitate "lol u mad AAer ASI abusing lag exploiting noob" over and over again. And worse than that are the passive aggressive ones that just sort of condescendingly throw out a compliment or say GG just to satisfy their own ego. You don't say "GG" to a team you goddamn spawn camped the entire game winning 905-75. And this happens a lot, believe me.

So faced with these sorts of people, what does someone with a rational mind do? It's infeasible (and impractical for socializing) to ignore everyone, even if there WERE ever to be an ignore all feature implemented. So at the end of the day, what is left? Because honestly, the only thing that comes to my mind is to simply start telling them: "Shut up, and/or grow up." Competitive things like this ARE SUPPOSED TO BE FUN and have some sense of SPORTSMANSHIP and CIVILITY, not be filled with condescending morons who just like to provoke.

Because quite frankly, the rate at which the LD community has devolved is frighteningly pathetic, and soon enough we'll ALL be feces-flinging apes. And I'd rather not see that happen further, especially in a game that's basically surviving on its community and its PVP alone at this point.

Great idea. Yes, LD community is terrible (in T3 mostly). Yes, we need to stop being [redacted]s to each other. Yes, we need to actually use strategies sometime.

How do we do that? Fix how you become skilled.

Well naturally, a large part of the problem is a game development aspect. But with OOO's track record, that isn't something that can be expected to be fixed in the near future.. Though I would suggest some better effort and marketing on their part to get the game out to a broader and hopefully less childish audience. The hell does Sega even do to assist them at this point, if anything?

In the short term, one thing I'm attempting to at least point out is that the LD community is becoming stagnated with narrow-minded and overly hostile individuals, whether that's due to age or otherwise I'm not sure. Either way, the game is becoming less fun because of it. In my view, both Lockdown AND the players' attitudes need to be improved.

Already happened, they all turned into fecal throwing monkeys eons ago... And they "run" this game so their ego has evolved into a big ball of derpiness

I gotta say after 15-ish years in gaming, attending tournament and even competing in them. I find it hard to believe that SK has the most try-hard ratio in it and most raging people... but it seems like it is

I can't name one other game that has THIS MUCH try-hard playing. Even Cod and Halo seem peaceful compared to this madness -_-

Pro tip: /clear

This is precisely why I've made it a habit to use the /clear command whenever I see text pop up in the chat box when playing Lockdown. Not only is it distracting but it amplifies the negative emotions that spur from these individuals, affecting your own mood and could even take a toll on your very performance. Speaking from first-hand experience here.

Know what would make Lockdown much more enjoyable?
The ability to disable the chat.

As I've said in another thread, Lockdown is a prime example of why we would want this feature. Pressing arrow-key up and enter to repeat /clear all the time gets a bit tiring, but it's totally worth it as I don't get to be distracted by the chat and bad individuals do not bother me - there's no banter for me to read. Being able to toggle the chat off either via a toggle in the options menu, a chat command or creating a new button in the UI with or without a hotkey assigned would let me shut myself off from the others and enjoy Lockdown as I should be.

Ignoring everyone in every game of Lockdown I play is not a viable solution. Hence, toggle chat.
Make it happen, Three Rings.

-Penalize leaving by making

-Create a rating system with a marginal increase in positive reputation for every game played (Could be a small green or red dot next to your name)
-Penalize leaving by taking 200 more CR and a large amount of negative reputation
-Reward players by creating an MVP formula (Caps and Defs being a multiplier to DMG so players with low DMG can still have a chance) and give extra payout

-Enable Steam VOIP
-Disable public chat

@Sham

It seems like we have a more hostile community because it's so small, so whatever group is dominant quickly takes over and you see them everywhere. SK, and LD especially, doesn't have a broad enough audience for there to be many nice people mixed in.

what's the point of disabling chat but enabling voice chat? So you can rage at people through your mic instead of chat?

zomg dude, an enlightening video.

thats exactly the same phase i went/going through!

i started out as a gunner in LD not realising my insane disadvantages due to location then eventually switched to swords out of frustration which i found to be a huge equalizer for me. Strapped on Auto-target and LD got pretty fun but eventually i got crazy bored of doing the same thing so I started playing with it off then further down the line, I sold my power sword and went back to try gunning like a mad man. I still occasionally use the hammer for the sheer ridiculousness its equivalent to akuma/gouki's shun goku satsu.

@soral stahp hammering mah groin in LD D:<

skill/power ratio is not balanced

Nobody in ld seems to appreciate one simple thing...
team play.
They all have this stupid clone metagame so stuck in their heads that they don't develop the tactics/social engineering skills that could produce far stronger gameplay overall. Plus, consider the target market, which appears to currently be a mostly teenage/pre-pubes audience. I can count on one hand how many people I know are in this age category and know what the term etiquette means on a basic level.

Won't go into how skill/power ratio effs this up worse in the game. But on a principle level it's more rewarding for people to act like their shoe size and not their age both online and irl.

I agree that LD is not the friendly community it was a year ago. Sure it had its problems and disputes, but not on the scale it does now. I think people on a whole are maybe taking it too seriously, as more than just a game.

The only other thing I can think of would be for the developers to either change things that cause people grief, or to introduce content that can draw people away who are simply there because they have nothing better to do. One somewhat simple change that I fully agree with is disabling (or giving the option to disable) cross-team chat. For example, it had a positive effect in League of Legends; I've linked this article before, but it bears being linked again.

@Laylla: I used to think sarcasm would be the answer. I went so far as to name my first guild/vanity tag <Sarcasm>. But I've found that sarcasm more often exacerbates bitter feelings than it difuses tension. Your mileage may vary, but I feel that something different is necessary.

@Skold: It's hard to have team play when teams are thrown together so quickly, and aren't preserved between matches outside of GvG. The damage-seeking-striker mentality dominates simply because it is effective in the chaos.

Aeolian makes the obvious point. As for the rest of you, welcome to the Internet.

While I would love to see OOO spend some time balancing LD, I really don't see that improving the community. Fiddling with chat options could help. Although the worst of it always comes through tells. I've gotten hate-stalked a couple of times for gunning before its "recent" resurgence.

my rant

LD is essentially skill-less and that is what people must realise. Once they realise this they will stop bragging about it. Although there are a handful skilled players ( the ones that can do in excess of 30k+ damage and other such team carries that turn the tide of the game like huntr or redhawkone).

Most of the time when you defeat someone or are defeated, one or more of the following is involved: poor weapon matchup, latency advantage, UVs, auto-target.

I don't even know why auto-target is enabled in the competitive environment of LD. Auto-target exists for some games but mostly in PvE mode while PvP mode, youre essentially on your own. Auto-target is used by some as an equalizer for bad latency but most simply do not need it. Some argue that its a preference and thats cool but you still have an unfair advantage over someone that possibly cannot utilize it properly due to location. I've not a problem with AT, i just have a problem with people that use it and go on to claim skill with it, same with the anti-ATers I don't see why they can't just turn it on as well.

There is no doubt in my mind that many of the complainers are laggers or high pingers. The only solutions is to kick out entire regions of players, get them a server or slow down the pace of LD (strikers do indeed move too fast for peoples internet connections to keep up), remove AT for LD (not a big deal really but would appease many people), weapon and armor balance or we can let it devolve further at its current pace.

You should all watch Klipik's video, very interesting. The WRH, sealed sword and pulsar lines came to mind when i saw that video. Some players have moved on and tried out other weapons and tactics besides the common polaris spam, polaris shock+sword or double swing heavy swords which i find to be admirable.

The new UI isn't helping either. Adam Jensen said it best 'if you wanna make enemies, try to change something'

LD has become increasingly

LD has become increasingly unfriendly with the appearance of guilds (which I won't name) that shamelessly justify any of their rant as valid because they are part of this guild; rants usually including typical insult prefixed or suffixed with noob/spammer/aa. No need to mention the rant only ever happens when the concerned player gets killed. Those guilds create an unfriendly, competitive mood and a race for damage only that doesn't fit the original purpose of Lockdown. Having played LD since the beginning, I can tell that its players only became worse and worse.

@Aus-Lagger: I was thinking of Polaris, WRH, and GF and toothpick combos with AA. Double swinging (I assume this is the first hit twice) I view as a learned skill. It's not particularly effective, but it's a skill nonetheless. Same with shield canceling and alch switching. I also do agree that those with extremely high ping shouldn't be considered as much as those with good connections when balancing for competitiveness, as the best way to cater to those player is reduce their lag by either moving or establishing new servers.

Reset?

I haven't tried T2 yet, but in T3 I use either an iron slug/ GF, Callahan/ GF, or Polaris /GF as a Recon.

I get my fair share of "ew's" and whatnot, but at the end of the day I play the same way, I get the same krogmo coins, and I enjoy every bit of it.

You can't reset the LD community. People have freedom of speech. Just as it is up to them to speak politely to opponents, it is up to them whether they want to abuse that freedom to try to make opponents feel bad for winning.
Apart from chat that is reportable, there is nothing you can do about it except not care.

The person ranting at you for winning is some scrub that cannot deal. That's all I see it as. If you've seen it before, and don't have a counter strategy, too bad. Ignore them and enjoy the people who are less repulsive.

Just remember. You don't have to limit yourself in a way you don't approve of, to gain the approval of someone you do not know.

To be honest, one of the main

To be honest, one of the main reasons I enjoy Lockdown is because of how terrible the community is. I mean, the depth of gameplay is shallow at best, so the main draw for me is the ability to kill whiny preteen boys and hopefully emasculate them a little in the process.
