Swords or Guns?

I recently just started playing this game and I liked it a lot! Anyways, straight to the point. I wanted to ask a question on which weapon should I choose. I learned that this game does not have classes but it all goes down on the weapon we choose and how we play it.

I never liked using swords throughout the online games I've played and I'm more of the ranged type. But somehow swords in Spiral Knights are way different compared to any other games and I'm pretty impressed with the damage dealt. I like to be very versatile and flexible without flinching or stand to wait the cast time but at the same time it can deal high/decent damage. Currently, I'm in a dilemma choosing either swords or guns. They both have their advantages and cons.

I would like to ask for your suggestions and advice on which type of weapon should I choose. And I prefer not to have another type of weapon in my arsenal. Thank you in advance for your help :)

Hello there!

You might want to read the wiki to have a better understanding of what the game has to offer. It's a good read too. I assure you that you'll learn lots of important information! What kind of information?

  1. different gear have added bonuses!
  2. monster have added strengths and weaknesses in higher tiers!
  3. Useful tips like shield bumping, how to weapon cancel, and much more!

But my first impression was to type "go with guns" since you typed that you were a ranged user.

'pretty impressed with the damage dealt'

There are a number of guns in Spiral Knights that can outdamage most other weapons, including swords. The Autogun lines all do a considerable amount of damage, although regrettably they require a certain playstyle since firing locks you in place and forces you to unload the entire clip. Drivers, though, also do a good deal of damage with their ricochets, whilst having more mobility than Autoguns. They take longer for their damage output to improve, though they can easily OHKO neutral enemies with charge shots at 5*. I'd mention Catalyser fun, too, but you said that you like killing stuff in a hurry, so its preferability for you would be debatable.

I personally like guns, partly due to the considerable range granted, which can be handy at quickly eliminating enemies that other weapons would not be able to. (Some turrets are placed out of reach or at the end of a permanent spike trap, where you would need to take some damage in order to eliminate them, and vials don't always do a great deal of damage.) Even if you decide to go with swords, I'd still advise you to get a gun of some kind (preferably elemental) to deal with turrets and switches, which can be awkward to cope with if you're only using swords. Whilst it is theoretically possible to finish every level with just one weapon type - other than Roarmulus Twins with shard bombs - it will be very slow if you have to keep stopping to pick up pots and throw them at distant switches.

I would recommend you look at the 5* of the stuff you want, and work towards that goal. Frequently people find themselves put off perfectly good items (the 2* alchemers are rather poorer than their later upgrades), or stuck at a dead-end upgrade line (the Breaker sets all stop at 3*, and Winmillion only goes up to 4*), because of the earlier versions of the equipment.

Also, please take the item descriptions and tooltip bars with a pinch of salt. Skolver increases damage rather than attack speed, Swiftstrike Buckler boosts attack speed of all weapons rather than just swords, Electron Vortex inflicts Shock, and Gran Faust does not swing faster than its cousin Divine Avenger.

Since you're a person who

Since you're a person who likes to use range on his side, I'd say the guns. Since you do like guns, I suggest you get two alchemers- the Cyrotech alchemer and the Voltech alchemer. Let me explain.

The Cyrotech has a good chance of causing moderate freeze. That's when you want to keep enemies away. Keep in mind that this does not work on frost enemies, and actually heals them.

The Voltech has a good chance of causing moderate shock. It will, at random intervals, cause the enemy to spasm, interrupting anything the enemy was doing and damaging them. Of course, like all guns, you have to hit the enemy with the bullet first for the effects to take place on the enemy.

With all that said, you will want to know how to rapid-fire. Well, there's no easy way. HOWEVER, try doing this:

Shoot all but one bullet->shield immediately after the second last bullet of that alchemer has been shot->switch right after you shield->Shoot all but one bullet in your second alchemer->shield immediately after the second last bullet of that alchemer has been shot->switch right after you shield

Rinse and repeat.

I suggest you go to this guide if my information is faulty.
