Leaving SK doesn't necessarily mean leaving Steam, TF2, etc. The items can be sold for CE, which can then be sold for items in other games, or even real world money. It would be pointless to let hundreds of dollars worth of items rot away in an unused account, and arguably a poor choice to give hundreds of dollars worth of items away to complete strangers.
