Shouldn't it be more than 3 players? It makes little sense for the difficulty to forcibly ramp up as less players are involved.
Why do lost souls only spawn if there are less than 3 players?
To compensate for the HP decrease ie the downscale in difficulty
OOO thinks the HP increase in a 4player room is enough of an upscale when in fact--contrary to popular belief, an HP increase does not make things more difficult.
I suspect it's because >2 players need to communicate a lot, and souls kill people trying to chat.
@Neodasus
As Zedddy could tell you:
The increase in HP per player is 33%.
At 3 players, monsters have 166%.
At 4 players, monsters have 199% of their health.
More players = a lot easier, not the other way around. So I doubt that is the case.
@Zeddy
I suppose that does make sense. But even so, other levels like graveyards still penalize players for having a larger party size by adding more phantoms in?
Due to the lack of living biological energy sources Lost Souls spawn in some areas. After enough living biological energy is being given off (say for example, 3+ knights) it suppresses the dark influence that catalyzes the generation of Lost Souls.

OOO wants you to carry alts or be on a full party.
Or it could truly be a silly coding mistake with ">" and "<"
I suppose it could be an effort to get us to not solo it all the time.
I feel like that would be the most half-[cogged] attempt ever... But then again, this is OOO we're talking about, so who knows what their thinking is?
Well........its not like they deal a lot of damage....................
Isn't it fun when you're playing the Built to Destroy mission with others, and they just won't quit running into the rockets right next to you and killing you with the splash damage?
Or when you're playing a Candlestick Keep level, and your friend keeps slingshot-ing dead howlitzers right at you?
Maybe they don't show up in big parties to avoid something annoying like that happening.
It is made to make you ask questiona nd piss you off when you play solo.
