Hello , I have been playing spiral knights now for about 6 months. My system has a quad core 2.2ghz processor with 4g of ram,Nvidia geforce ti 560 card with 2g of ram. My hard drive is solid state. I have tried everything to make this game play smoothly on even low detail and i am out of options. I have downloaded the latest 64bit java,downloaded the latest spiral knights game,updated to the latest video drivers and am using windows 7. I recently tried adding an extra.txt file to the spiral knights folder and added some commands to utilize the multi-core processor and give java more ram. that seemed to help load times and clear up the stutter for 1 game of ld but then it gets progressively worse until it is unplayable. i have tried all of the options listed in the forums about changing my graphics settings in my nvidia control panel and have tried all of the in game options. I do not have a virus because it was the exact same even after i installed a brand new hard drive. Any ideas?...do i have to buy another $300 video card because the game just does not work well with nvidia? Better processor? more ram? Thank you in advance for any suggestions..:)

Edit: i forgot to mention i recently re-downloaded the game again and now the game wont launch when i add the extra.txt file...back to square 1

Default task manager could tell you if it's the processor or RAM working at full capacity. Start with that.
You'll have to download some hardware monitoring program (everest?) to see if it's something else.

A random long shot would be downloading beta drivers http://www.geforce.com/drivers/beta-legacy
Could make it better, could make it worse, could do nothing at all.

Greetings,

Can you try submitting a bug report when the stuttering shows up? We can have a look and see if there is any stand out problem that could help you in smoothing out your gameplay experience.

@helios

Thank you for your prompt response. i can submit a bug report next time i am in lockdown that seems to be the place it stutters the worst, especially when there is a lot going on. It seems to happen now and again everywhere else however it is mostly when there is a lot going on on the screen. Any idea why the extra.txt file doesn't work anymore? because it was better when i was using that. this is the commands i had in it.

-XX:+UseParallelGC
-XX:+UseParallelOldGC
-Xms1g
-Xmx3G

@Little-juances
Thank you for the suggestion, i downloaded everest trial but have not yet installed it. Also i did try the beta for my vid card and its about the same...:(

The extra.txt is still

The extra.txt is still possible to use, there's been no change that would block its functionality. It is possible to launch the game with those options applied, but if you cannot it would indicate the options you are setting are not fully compatible with your system. It is possible that you might not reliably have 1GB of free physical memory for Java to use at the game launch. This is why use of these tweaks are generally discouraged.

Ty again for your immediate responces.

Thanks for the response, I have since submitted a bug report in lockdown . I have also figured out what i was doing wrong with the extra.txt file. I was putting it in the sk folder instead of appdata sk folder. Still having massive stutter issues in lockdown nothing seems to help. Unfortunately it makes me a vry bad ld player being 2 secs behind everyone else..:( i have also used the everest program and ran a stress test on everything and nothing seems to have a problem. Any more ideas would be greatly appreciated. Excellent support in this game, i must say...:)

Let's try this

I can see the hiccuping you're talking about. It's odd that it starts happening the moment you arrive in a Lockdown match. Let's try getting rid of the extra.txt for now and updating the Java version your game uses from version 6 to version 7. For some users this can smooth out performance a bit.

  1. Make sure to install the most recent version of Java from Java.com.
  2. Right-click on the link in your Start Menu or Desktop that you use to launch Spiral Knights. Choose properties.
  3. In the Target box replace the file path inside the quotes with the path to your Java 7 installation (default C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe). Make sure not to change anything outside of the quotes.

Thank you again, I have tried what you ask and it still is doing the same thing. I have also now tried formating and changing to a different operating system, i have tried windows xp, windows xp64, and windows 8. Now i am back to windows 7 because made no difference whatsoever, and to be honest i cant stand windows 8. I have also tried using on board video as well as my old video card which was a nvidia galaxy 210 with 1024m. The game oddly enough seems to run the same using either one of those. i am thinking there may be a problem with the chipset on my motherboard or somthing like that. Does that sound like a reasonable assumtion? or perhaps there is somthing wrong with my processer? Either way i am going to replace both.

It's doubtful that a problem

It's doubtful that a problem on the motherboard level would only show up in Spiral Knights and not affect any other task on your computer. Have you tried changing the various options in the NVidia Control Panel? Sometimes a specific combination of V-Sync options and Triple Buffering can smooth out these events.
