Spiral Developers, I have a quick question to ask (About "getdown")

I recently came across your getdown library. I see that SK uses getdown as well.

My question, then, is this: could getdown be responsible of the glitch in Windows where the game won't update or updates very slowly? If so, I would be very happy to continue learning Java (which I dropped in preference of C++ and C) and dive into getdown's source code. I love this game, and I want to help however I can. Being that so many players are Windows users, fixing the glitch would help a lot.

So the question is, is there any possibility that this glitch stems from getdown? Or is it a SK specific thing?

(I could probably check this by trying another game which uses getdown, but I can't do that right now.)

I can't remember how many time I've seen an error message saying "getdown.txt failed" or whatever when I'm trying to update SK. I'm no tech wizard, but it makes sense to me that it's causing problems!

It would be very shamefull for OOO if someone that just decided to learn java instead of C is able to find and fix a piece of code.

Please don't try, for the sake of their reputation.

If they don't say anything, no one will know.

Doubtful

It's not Getdown itself that's causing the hiccup on patch days, and it's not specific to Windows. It's usually that the resource files it's trying to pull can't be fetched in a timely manner for one reason or another. The bar doesn't "rewind" so when it retries it fits all the new progress into what's left. This is a pretty obvious event in the launcher log file.

You can observe this sometimes by trying to fetch the update files via your browser, the download speed on patch days crawls down to a few kbps and hangs. Usually my solution is to cancel the updated and wait five-ten minutes. That seems to start a fresh connection with the service hosting the update files.

It's also possible that the SK files are so heavily fragmented that write takes for ever (aggravated further by relatively slow laptop drives). Every update can add a surprising amount of entropy the the SK folder. This is only an issue with Windows systems really as OS X/Linux filesystems tend handle file fragmentation in a much more automatic manner.

You are experiencing a PICNIC ERROR!

I'm saying I'd try to join the search. Not that I'd find it, but after searching for a while I might kill some things. That will help!

I'm not saying I'm skilled. It's just the more hands, the better! (Although my unskilled hands won't be as good as skilled ones.)
