I'm curious, is curse damage blocked by shadow defence or normal defence or is it unblocked?

It is reduced by curse resistance and increased by weakness to curse, just like fire and freeze damage.

During my testings, it appeared as if shadow defence increased curse damage, but it turned out that it was just Snarbolax cap having a hidden amount of negative curse resistance.

No clue, get digging! I only found it out just earlier in GTH through self-cursing myself while wearing a Snarby cap. The exact amount eludes me, but it's not as much as one piece of Chaos, but a bit more than a Merc Demo helm with curse high combined with Armour of the Fallen.
