Two words. Jem. Pire.

The Jempire (a major PvP guild) has lasted at least one full year, and managed to top the lockdown GvG leaderboards every week of said year...

Is it good or bad for the game overall?

PvE guilds tend to last longer because they tend to be made up of more mature people, and don't get involved in the hyper-competitive mindset of mergers, subbing players, and jabbing insults at each other that PvP guilds always seem to fall into. They form stable communities, and play the game to enjoy the game and the people playing it instead of only joining a PvP guild to get better at LD or win more.

And no, not only one will survive. Both types of guild will always exist, unless PvE or PvP gets downright removed from the game.
