Can't answer any of the LD stuff, but Retrodes wipe their mouths because they use the same animation as the zombles. It's the breath attack animation sans one arm.
I wonder if it's possible for OOO to just "cancel" the mouth wipe part of that animation.

I took the "mouth wipe" as sort of "oh jeez this is hot let's get any of this material off my face before it blows up," giving a bit more life and character to the animation.

Retrodes probably have a reworked zombie animation. Zomgs do that after their breath, right?

The Retrodes do not wipe their mouths they place something in. They "reload". They are just machines after all.
Or ARE they?
