I just downloaded the game. I can only find competitive PVP arenas which cost currency to play. What's the free arena?

Welcome to the game.
My advice, is to play through the missions, so you can get some practice. Then, you try to play PVP. There are two different PVP games: one is Lockdown, where you try to capture points, and defend the points that your team has already captured. This is where your training will come in handy, as you use the weapons you use on the missions. Also, there will be lots of raging depending on what tier you join. Right now, you have just joined, so you are in tier 1. Later on, when you get better gear, you will be in tier 2. Then after tier 2, is tier 3, where everyone has the most powerful gear. In tier 3 Lockdown, or Ld as it's know, that's is where the most rage is. Tier 2 still has rage, but not as much. In tier 1, there are little people there, so rage is at a minimal. However, it can take sometime to get a match going in tier 1.
The second one, is called Blast Network. This game is similar to bomberman, due to the fact that you place a bomb, collect power-ups, and try to blast your opponent to bits and pieces. Everyone is given a stock bomb, and has 3 health. Skill determines who wins. Unlike LD, you can't practice unless you play the game.
Edit: Is that any better, or do I still need to fix it?

^You people really need to cut that out, that's not the only thing you can do in Lockdown, there is gunning, bombing, you can use brandishes, Cutters, those are all viable. They do need skill to use, but killing "mainstreamers" with these are very rewarding :]

I totally aggree with you. Touthpicks, gran faust's and skolver coats aren't the only things to use. They are too mainstream. I actually selled my gran faust and crafted a new combuster instead.
It's hard to use without AA, this is the moment where Feller shows up and accuses me of using AA; I <3 Feller, but hey it's a new challenge you know. PvP is actually more ballanced now than it was before, thanks to the cool new update OOO gave us.
So now it's the time I think to use a different style of playing. I don't say that you should totally change because I still use my lovely skolver set but it's not a bad idea for improvement.

There is no free arena.
Second, I think this should be in New Recruits section, and I suppose there should be a few guilds there?
If not I made a couple of videos on how to play Lockdown, basics at least.
Main focus of the game is the PVE/clockworks, accessible via missions and stuff...
