Often when we are in a party, me and my friends swear, but against monsters, for example when they kill and overwhelm us we toss out an f word(or others, example f you slime) is this considered a violation of the community standards? We only do it in missions and against monsters.

Seriously.

Seriously, outside the joke, will I get banned if I keep it up or no?

Umm...

No, not unless someone in your party reports you . So as long as you are with a group of three friends, you should be okay to take out your anger on those confounded enemies. Just keep it within the party.

So is it or isn't it against the rules? The wiki sais that it isn't unless it's directed at other knights.

First, there is a difference between being reported and ultimately being banned, and while a GM is the only person who can definitively answer your question, they have stated before that they cannot/will not discuss the terms of actual bans with anyone other than the player involved--i.e., it is not likely that a GM is going to pop up and tell you for sure that yes/no being reported for cursing at monsters will get you banned.
All that having been said, there is nothing to STOP a player from reporting you for what they think is offensive--whether or not it was directed at them--and if you look at the actual form to report someone you will see that it actually says something to the effect of, "used foul language and did not stop when asked" (no mention of the language being directed at them, just that strong language was used and you didn't stop when they asked you to). If you're really worried about this, the easiest thing to do is a.) continue to play with your friends who you know are not offended, and b.) just don't use it around players that you don't know WON'T be offended. You make the choice of expressing your frustration by cursing at monsters, but it is just as easy to NOT use that kind of language publicly.

Usually when I play tier 3, I'm not the only one to curse, seriously, I've learned entirely new words from these guys!

Yes, everyone does it, but it's still wrong. 99% of the time nothing will happen, but there's still that small chance someone will report you and the rules will back them up.

Compare it to downloading music or using an unprotected wi-fi.

Haha, yes, I understand. And I think it's a pretty safe bet that if the other people in your party are using strong language, the chances that they are going to report you for doing the same are probably pretty low. Again, if it's something you are concerned about, just be careful doing it around players you don't know and you shouldn't have anything to worry about--and also, maybe this goes without saying, but if someone tells you "hey, that's offensive to me," just be sure to stop.
The chat filter is there for a reason, and if someone has chosen to turn it off it is assumed that they are doing so because they aren't offended by strong language. Still, everyone's standards of what is/isn't offensive vary, and in the end your behavior is the only thing you have control over.

Quote from the forum rules and help.

"Use foul, abusive, or offensive language. If a swear word is filtered in-game in Spiral Knights, do not use it on the Spiral Knights forums."

Here's the link to the page

In response to Narfle.

Yes. In the end it all boils down to your judgement.

Hm.

Swearing against a moister? They are computer AI, how could it possibly matter? Even swearing at other knights is fine, I'm sure, as long as they know that it is not intended to be offensive, such as if it were a joke or friendly insult. Isn't it interesting, we only tend to insult our friends?
The only reason I can think of of you not being able to play the game after a river of curses is having your dear mother watch you play.

No because foul language is

No because foul language is filtered. Do not bypass the filters though, because that will lead to a ban. I once bypassed the r word and I was immediately given a notice. Immediately.

The r word is never funny

EVER

I hope not...

I know the devilites and the occasional frost lumbar that 2-hko's you by freezing and hitting you over and over again are the proud owners of some of the most rage-driven, racist, sexist, ageist, marxist, cubist, cultist, and dentist remarks muttered outside anything R. Lee Ermey said in Full Metal Jacket. (don't worry, it's censored!)

I think...

If you use "normal" swear words that are filtered through the chat filter, you shouldn't have any problems. Now if you're like me and you like to make up different spellings and pronunciations for swears... Then you might have a problem.

^Lol...

You shouldn't get banned if you swear at a monster who just choke slammed you into a shock pad. Im sure a ton of people do it. And i highly doubt GMs watch individual parties to see who swears.

"AWW HE SAID BAD WORD HE GET BANNED NOW MONSTER FEELINGS HURT!!"

Yeah, dont worry about it. Just dont swear in Haven or At other people who kick your balls in lockdown, then dance on ur dead body.

Try sci-fi swearwords, like smeghead or gorram.

I don't think they ban for those. They can be shown on TV, at least.

You said so yourself, you've

You said so yourself, you've "learned new words from these guys". Nobody will get angry with you if you swear at inanimate objects unless you teach their kid a word they shouldn't know. Just know who you're with. Don't be a completly bad influence, and you'll never get punished for little things like swearing.
