im working on upgrading my armor from tier 4 to 5, but i dont like the color or name that i chose. could i give my gear to my other character i just made after upgrading it? and would this allow me to effectively switch mains?

As long as you don't wear the armor yes.
right after an item is upgraded, it is completely tradeable, so yes you could transfer it over.
