[What if..] Different gimmick for lockdown maps (A.K.A. Best way for the Sleep Status to return?)

With the current lockdown maps that we have, I know one thing that gets on everyone's nerves is the various hazard traps and landing in them. Once you land in them, you're pretty much dead. It has come to my attention that a hazard trap does not exist for the poison status, but that's not what I'm pushing for here. I'm talking about what if lockdown maps were built around a specific hazard? Downtown demonstrates this very well as you have to cross a specific hazard to get from point to point.

How about the sleep status? We were aware of this status condition in the Preview Event and were teased with UVs for it shortly after Spiral Knights' release. Wouldn't it be an interesting idea to have the Sleep Status make a return, in lockdown no less?

My thought comprised of a map that puts all knights to sleep via a button press and timer that counts down to alert knights that they are about to go into a deep slumber; Their only escape/protection from the status would pertain to certain knights which are in a protected area, such as their base or another area of the map*.

This is simply me brainstorming out loud, you can skip this section if you like.
A button is placed randomly in a map, covered by a block at first and then simply just warping around the map. Once pressed, the button warps to a different area on the map at random and a countdown starts ticking alarming knights that they are about to be put into a deep sleep. This is where the scramble happens. If a knight is not at their base or another area of the map*, they are put to sleep for a period of time. You can think of it as giving all the knights a bit of breathing room to catch themselves in the heat of battle. I think it might be an interesting concept. :)

What do you guys think would be the best way for the Sleep Status to make a return?

lol?

An interesting idea but I would definitely not support this specific example of what sleep could do in LD.. my PRIDE will be hurt if I have to run away from a random bomb appearing near me that threatens to put me to sleep -.-

Imagine 4 knights battling it out in a specific area.. and the bomb pops up.. everyone scramble to their base or some other area like rats, because of it.. lolol :P

Ooh, that makes me think of

Ooh, that makes me think of the scenarios in Four Swords Adventure where Shadow Link appears and throws a giant insta-kill bomb out and you gotta be out of the screen (i.e. hiding in caves, etc.) before it explodes or you're done for. To be honest, it sounds like a neat idea and could actually serve to turn entire matches around if a team gets cornered by the other or some such. I'm definitely in favour of that kind of idea.

Also, lol @ pride.

What if the points are safe zones too? Then you could force objective play. :D

Doesn't sound too bad either, actually. I was about to question what good it would be if you were to be spawn-camped, but crafty recons could use this to get to other capture points and neutralize them during the arena lockdown period. It would reinforce bypassing strategies as the lockdown periods would completely lock the opposition away for a certain amount of time, possibly long enough to neutralize or even capture the point and move to the next. Imagine Facility having every tile save for the control points filled with shock-tiles that all activate when the lockdown effect takes place. Sounds kinda awesome.

Aaaand...

If sleep didn't last indefinitely, you could get a bonus from having a bunch of sleep resist and then just staying out in the middle of the map, but you wake up quickly and can be capping a point before everyone else gets there.

Sounds fun!

Striker would have the biggest advantage because of their boost. Maybe there would be obstacles to obstruct the strikers path? And if you're put to sleep on a CP, will you still be capturing it?

Interesting.

Reminds me a lot of some Gears Of War multi player maps (third person action shooter). I think there was one map by the name of "Avalanche", where an avalanche would roll in on the map every now and then and exterminate anyone who haven't found any cover. The dips in the map would be filled with snow, and the map would be completely different after the occurrence. A map like this would probably encourage more striker use (implying there can be any more striker use), but I'd say it's at least for a legitimate cause. I think the Avalanche map in Gears Of War has different places one can hide in order to escape the wreckage.

There was also a different multi player map in the same game-series where a heavy dust storm would suddenly fall in over the map, and sight would be limited to next to nothing, creating very good opportunities for close quarters combat in even the most open (structure-wise) maps. I can imagine this would be something recons could make a big advantage of. Seeing as they have little chance of getting ambushed in any way when they are using their invisibility.
I would love to see a desert themed Lockdown map with this kind of feature. Though I realise it would mean all new textures to be made and all that, but still.

OPs sleep idea sounds good if you ask me. Although, instead of having a small random button teleport around under blocks (which we would eventually run out of), my idea/twist went more like: Having a capture point in the middle that cause sleep (for a short amount of time) to the other team when captured. The more the middle point gets captured back and forth, the more sleep-periods people will experience. And maybe to mix it up a bit, make the capture point bigger, and make the capture time twice as long (which would encourage more co-operation capture).

I think it would be good if the sleep timer was started by flipping a simple switch, that stayed in one place away from all points. It would give us something else to fight over. Like the Gold Mineral Fields in Starcraft II, you can create more varied battles by placing more objectives in different places.

Hell, as far as I know, there

Hell, as far as I know, there has been no talk about the Slumbering Shrine, the home of the infamous Slooms and Zee Cores, making a return as of yet. There is still the potential for this status ailment to potentially be a PvP exclusive; That sounds like it would be fun to simply craft up armor SPECIFICALLY for PvP.

An earlier post mentioned something in reference to the Call of Duty series regarding a Sandstorm that enshrouds the whole battlefield. Truthfully, I wouldn't mind this either. I'd like to see something where you wouldn't be able to see your whole field of view, but rather instead see only a few feet from your knight.

This MAY make battles more tactical in a sense!
