Greetings!

This week's discussion is centered on that which you can purchase from Brinks for Almirian Seals: the Fang of Vog, Ancient Plate Helm, Ancient Plate Mail, Ancient Plate Shield, and Blackened Crest/Crest of Almire.

"Wait," you say. "Haven't we talked about some of these before?" And the answer is yes. "Are you going to talk about them again?" Yes, we'll mention them. We won't go into full detail, but they're part of the discussion. The emphasis will be away from the shields, since we've spent significant time on those previously.

SO!
Is there ever a time when you should use this gear over anything else?
Sleep vulnerability? Seriously?
How much of a deterrent are the attack speed and movement speed penalties?
Fang of Vog: novelty weapon or viable combat option?
Describe the gear in five words!

Have fun!

There's really no reason to use Ancient Plate gear over anything else, the attack speed penalty just isn't worth it. Of course, if they ever make a mission completely consisting out of Trojans and other enemies that deal pure normal, then it's somewhat viable.

The sleep vulnerability is there for a good reason. They want us to discredit it further, so the slooms can one day return and enact their revenge upon us.

The movement speed decrease is negligible, you won't really notice it unless you're running right next to another knight. The attack speed decrease on the other hand, is a big deal. Sure, it can be countered with UV's, trinkets, and the Swifty, but why bother at that point?

A novelty weapon with some minor combat viability. It's essentially an inferior, riskier version of the Combuster, with a Calibur-style charge attack. The chance to have the charge backfire on you doesn't make it even remotely worth using, and its DPS is terrible compared to other normal/elemental or pure elemental weapons.

This gear is flippin' Terribru.

P.S. It's Almirian, not Almerian. (inb4someonecallsmeagrammarnazi)

So I use Ancient Plate sometimes. Minor annoyance of Ancient Plate is that it's a pain to get through some traps, you either have to take shorter paths or take the damage, further leaving you behind or making the health bonus useless. Main problem with traps is that you would assume that you wouldn't take 6 pips of damage from a T3 spike trap...

An upside of Ancient Plate is using it in T1. You. Are. A. God. in T1 with Ancient Plate on. Increased health and pure normal defence takes the cake. T1 deals low normal damage and your +6 health makes you nearly invincible. If you want to derp around in T1, Ancient Plate is boss. The attack speed penalty is hardly noticeable after a while. The fact that it has no specialised defence doesn't matter for T2 and T3, it's not like you get hit often especially with dash and bash.

Fang of Vog is a great sword, and I'm too lazy to get a Combuster. Though it does less damage than the Combuster and has reduced attack speed, it procs fire on normal hits and has extended reach on the 2nd and 3rd strikes (by half a block and a full block respectively). The charge attack is slower than Levi (probably due to inherent slower speed) but thus can hit 4 times as opposed to Levi's maximum 3 times.

Ancient Plate shield is overall great for any situation, blocks a minimum of 1 hit from absolutely anything. If I'm just playing randomly switching from party to party, I'll bring this shield along with some normal weapons.

An acquired taste, but delightful. (Sometimes I play with full Ancient Plate, FoV and my Triglav)

Oh CoA? errr too lazy to make for a slight benefit, I just use Ancient Plate, Grey Owlite Shield, and my Honorguard(great cosmetic item).

Ancient set:
Too **** slow to care. [do *s count as a word?]

Ancient Plate Shield:
Redundant with Volcanic and Omega.

FoV:
Enemies burn faster than you.

FoV is the best (apparently

FoV is the best (apparently second best to Volcanic Pepperbox) weapon against the Royal Jelly. Other than that though, it's just a novelty weapon.

The Ancient Set is actually alright; you can tank a few trojan hits (which deal pure normal) before dying to its blows because of the high normal damage resistance. In fact, I'd say it's better than everything except swordie/gunner/bomber gear.

Ancient plate shield can literally tank a trojan for all eternity, is my experience with it.

The armour is pretty good, too, depending on your playstyle. The truth is that damage increase is severely overrated on swords, and barely needed at all for the heavy swords. On depth 24, a medium damage bonus will let you kill a zombie in 3 hits (a combo and a half) using Divine Avenger. If you have max damage bonus, it's still 3 hits, so anything above a medium is entirely wasted. Even if you don't have any damage bonus at all, you'll still kill zombies in one combo, which is functionally a lot like killing them in a combo and a half anyway. With that in mind, Ancient Plate (and other plate armours) pairs up nicely with the heavy swords. You might think the reduced attack speed would hamper you, but really, it doesn't. If you have any experience with heavy swords and bombs beyond rudamentary spamming, you should have no problems at all.

I've done many a run with full Ancient + Triglav and it's a very fun playstyle.

@Zeddy
I can barely use my Suda without some ASI. Too slow for me.

@Latisan Sklay
CoA is great but if we're talking about what you get straight from Brinks, all sucks quite a bit.

Fang of Vog: Trophy or suicide? Both, really.
Blackened Crest: Looks good with Vog set.
Ancient Plate Shield: Worse than VPS although good.
Ancient Plate Helm: I'll pass on that one.
Ancient Plate Armour: Pairs with BKC in LD.

Ancient Plate Set

The ancient set is very slow. The movement speed is low, including the ASI (I think). It's good for defense, but not good for combat much. Although if I were a defensive player, I would honestly buy it.

Fang Of Vog

Fang of vog is risky, suicidal, but powerful. It almost acts like a combuster, except FoV is slightly slower than combuster. FoV can inflect fire at random points. As for the charge, you can use it if you're surrounded, but you'll die faster if you caught yourself fire.

Blackened Crest

What Krakob said about it.

In conclusion, I have five words about the Ancient Plate Set

Other than the Blackened

Other than the Blackened Crest, I've never used any of the Almirian gear. I only really get the armor for my customary 30k crowns. However, I have seen quite a few people use the set really effectively in lockdown. They've managed to overcome the reduced movement speed and tank everything (they can be pretty hard to kill at times).

If you ask me, the Fang of Vog sounds like a suicide weapon. Why don't I have this yet? :D
