As far as I know some players buy them for...let's say 100 cr and then sell them for 250-300 cr. Easy crowns...

It really depends upon the mats. If you're looking at the ones Kamishinlnoyari mentioned, those are either going for reselling or into Wolver Gear and/or Flourishes.
For others that may be seemingly random, they may be for a furnishing in the person's Guild Hall, just reselling in general, perhaps Magic Gear, Brandishes, and Demo Gear.
Or it's as Juances said. :P

guild halls
You need lots of mats for making new statues at guild halls, and well that is the cheap way of getting them.
it's a simple thing called "ragecraft", I suggest you to try it some time.
