I think this is weird...
In tier 2 Lockdown. What do you think if I use freeze vaporizer Mk2. When enemy freeze I will use Toxic Catalyzer charge about 2 times. Then I demonate with basic attack.
Bam! They get pure Shadow damage with poison. Poison may not useful but it help enemy weaker(?)
Catalyzer in Lockdown
Once they are frozen, keep hitting them with Cryotech charges until they break out or die. Much more effective.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the last time I did tests with catalyzer charges, they did absolutely no damage, explosion on the target or otherwise.
The only damage they did take, from what I've seen, has been from the initial shot itself. Despite this, the explosion from the Biohazard line can still cause poison on everyone around you (teammates, enemies).
They're broken and in a bad way.
Unless you count being able to detonate yourself a good thing, lol. (if someone tags you and you have a catalyzer yourself, you can use dash to move into the point that a normal shot explodes, or move into a wall and shoot it)
The only way I've seen to viably use catalyzer in lockdown is to use them as traps (either laying them along side you so it blocks a melee approach, or by using it to force your opponent to move the opposite direction).
But if they did work, freeze+catalyzer would have been viable. Cryo's medium freeze has a longer time and lets you drop more charges.
So catalyzer isn't that useful after all...
But thanks for your answer.
It has the same issue as the Blitz needle, cutter swords. Invincibility frames cause some of the shots to miss. In the catalyzer's case, the invincibility frames only allow damage from the first shot to do anything, because the charges detonate just after the first shot, which is during the invincibility. Blitz needle suffers from similar issue, though it can stunlock. Cutter lines can stunlock as well, but damage is minimal (i one brought a cutter into T3, and my teammate had Hunting Blade. We cornered and killed someone in chaos. Pretty hilarious death :D)
Very unique idea, but it wouldn't work too well. You're best bet is to find an attack that has the highest initial hit, and use that. An example would be DA charge hit in T3 lockdown, does more than brandish. In T2, probably sealed sword or 3* brandish.
I was vague with the charge explosion doing no damage "on the target or otherwise", and I can say for sure that it's not the lack of invincibility frames.
There is a surefire way to voluntarily disable them: have your enemy partner hold charge. The charge animation has no invincibility.
Now, I did some tests earlier with this:
[Normal shot] alone took my partner down to 87%
[Normal shot] + [charge explosion] took him to 87% <-- ! this means that charge explosion did NOTHING.
If he wasn't charging, then it would basically be a gamble on whether or not the normal hit or the charge would register first instead.
I have tested with a Catalyzer in Lockdown myself and from my results the charges do hurt people, but not very much. My first result was against a striker with full shadow gear and it took 5 charged shots to kill him at once. My second test subject was an ash tail recon which took ... I forgot, I think 8 charges to kill him all at once. These two subjects had full health when I did the experiment and no one was charging.
How I did this was freezing people with my Shivermist and hope no one was around because no one will listen to me to leave me alone, so it was very hard and time consuming.
I don't know why some people say the charges don't do anything but poison or do 1/3 or its original damage.
From my results I found out that recons can hide Catalyzer charges when cloaked and for guardians, the charges will only damage the shield even with a lot of charge shots like 10 or more, although this is obvious I'm stating it anyway.
I would recommend not to attempt using Catalyzer charge shots against other players unless you got a team that can freeze and/or use their charge shots on them.
Enemy will only take damage from one explosion unless they are silly enough to charge and take away their invinciframes.
Not worth it in my opinion. Using the normal attacks are better. Like, try comboing it with a shadowtech MK II sometime. It's awesome.
And yes, poison halves your enemies' damage and makes them take extra damage (not sure by how much, someone can fill me in on that), though if you really want to spread poison properly I suggest Toxic vaporizer MK II instead. Toxic catalyzer's not a bad gun though.
