I was just wondering, but why does OOO want to give the game a clean start when SK is officially released? I remember in Open Beta of another game of OOO's, Bang! Howdy, all cowboys and cowgirls remained alive after its official release. I mean, it just seems like a waste with people trying so hard to upgrading to the best weapons and armor that all of their efforts will be lost. Then they would have to redo everything.
Why?

You have to put your efforts in testing not on upgrading your best weapons and armours.
YOUR EFFORT WON'T BE LOST BECAUSE YOUR ONLY EFFORT AT THIS STAGE IS YOUR INPUT INTO GAME IMPROVING PROCESS (finding bugs, making suggestions, general feedback - I'm sure your effort put in those things won't be lost).
I'd say that the biggest reason for a wipe is that the supply of goods, equipment, and money is waaay off from what is wanted at release.
In fact, I'd go as far as to say that if you want to test the distribution of goods from the dungeons as you play, then you need to do another wipe before the main "open beta" -- just to make sure that loot payouts are balanced and neither "too hard to find stuff" nor "so common that you can get stuff for free".
But then, I see an economy where no one else does ...
There are a number of reasons for games doing this. And for your information this is more like a closed beta (Which is generally when a wipe happens in any game) as you require an invite (I don't care how common those are) and there's an NDA. Some do it to give everyone a fair start of the game or it could be so you don't exploit certain bugs or balance issues (For example, 5* recipes used to be 3k, what if you bought a load of those and sold them?). We are right now just testing the game making sure it's balanced. It's not just for fun but for testing as well.
If the wipe is really going to annoy you, it's best that you stop playing. Right now, I'm just playing for fun but I might as well get good gear in the process (That's just a matter of luck of getting the recipe and the crowns for the energy costs).
