Is it possible to out level my friends or can I always go back and join them in lower level missions? Does a level gap create any problems?

You can always go back and do lower-level missions. So that is not a problem.
There is an issue in prestige and danger missions, because these missions are tuned for your rank. For example, if you're a high-rank knight, and you do Legion of Almire, then you do the Stratum 6 version (depths 24 and 25). When your lower-rank friend does Legion of Almire, he might find himself on Stratum 4 (depths 14 and 15). If he invites you to his version, then you won't get prestige. If you invite him to your version, then he'll get prestige, but it might be very hard for him. So you two might encounter minor problems in doing the mission together.
I'm not an expert on this stuff, so I could be wrong. Hopefully someone else will verify.
