Does the costume armor give you its stats along with your regularly equipped armor or is it just for show and no benefit?

The benefit is that you can wear ugly armor without having to look at it. So if the ugly armor had great defenses, you can have those defenses without the drawback of hating how you look.
...Yeah, that's pretty much it.
Costumes are just for show - to give your character some originality. Allows you to style yourself how you want, even if you don't like the stats you would get basically.
