I remeber seeing a thread like this awhile back and thought it was fun. With all the worry over the new mega-patch, i figured we could all use a distraction. Just post things in the game that are a reference or allusion to something else. The three i can think of immediately are cradle and all, which is a nursery rhyme, mad hatter, which is for alice in wonderland, and the reinforced demo helm description, which is a take on a line from the first Resident evil game. Ready, Go!
References in the game
i think the link next to "this" is broken. unless its the smae as the one at the bottom
Edit: and u repeated my resident evil reference
Blast Network is a blatant reference to the Bomberman series.
Almost every item in the Gunslinger line packs a reference to at least one western. I feel like the Deadshot Chapeau does too, but it's going over my head at the moment.
I think deadshot is just a term for a really good shot, or someone who is at least. Also: World of MOORcraft, and skolver cap being fit for any "king of the wild frontier" (davy crocket)
Of course, there could be ones out there we haven't discovered yet.
Now that I think about it, I wonder if there's any Star Wars.
Now that i think about it i dont know of any off the type of my head. We should keep an eye out for one.
There are definitely a few very, very obscure references in the game that as I far as I know, no one has pointed out.
Challenge accepted. Sidenote: Yay, nick posted in a thread i started!
Pretty sure the Phantasy Star II ref hasn't been discovered by anyone and I think it's pretty obvious.
Edit: Well now after looking it up it's probably because I was too obvious and changed it last minute. Doh.
There's a 9-1 mission called An Occurrence at Owlite Keep, which is a reference to a short story by Ambrose Bierce. It's a good read.
I shall once again point out that the Graviton Bomb is almost identical to Vaati of the tLoZ series. At least his eye form.
Titan statues reaaaally remind me of tLoZ: Wind Waker. Why, I'm not entirely sure. It's just that style.
Nice call Krakob. It totally does look like him. Kind of a silly one but Knight vision googles
Rise or Fall, the name of the battle theme from the game in question. I'm sure this has been pointed out previously.
The name of the game is a reference of an honorific title developed in Europe that was usually given to cool warriors.
How has no one mentioned the Roarmulus twins and Romulus and Remus? Don't know if it counts but the leviathan blade line charge is reminiscent of Link's main attack.
I mostly copied/pasted my post about Missions references from the other thread (plus add some more):
3-2 Shadow of the Beast
Reference to well known (but not so good IMO) computer game Shadow of the Beast.
4-2 Pierce of Cake
Reference to the idiom Piece of Cake (it makes sense especially since Beasts and Slimes are easiest monster families)
4-3 Elemental My Dear
Reference to quote of famous Sherlock Holmes: Elementary, my dear Watson.
5-1 The Shadow Knows
Reference to the Shadow.
5-1 Work for Idle Hands
Reference to the idiom: The devil finds work for idle hands.
5-2 Time Enough at Last
Reference to the Twilight Zone episode called Time Enough at Last.
6-1 Axes of Evil
Reference to term used by George W. Bush to describe countries that he accused of helping terrorism.
8-2 The Great Escape
Reference to the film The Great Escape.
9-1 An Occurrence at Owlite Keep
Reference to the Twilight Zone episode called An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.
9-2 Eye of the Needle
Reference to Eye of the Needle aphorism.
9-2 Alone in the Dark
Reference to one of the best game of my childhood - famous Alone in the Dark.
Assault on Machine Shop 13
Reference to the film Assault on Precinct 13.
As for Nameless Poncho, it's a reference to poncho worn by The Man with No Name (played by Clint Eastwood) in A Fistful of Dollarss. It has VERY similar pattern/design too.
Also monsters' quotes (April 1st event) are numerous references. For example all gremlins' ones (Bright light! Bright light!; Bye bye, Billy!; Water... gun; Gizmoooo!) comes from the well known film Gremlins.
@Merethif: And that Twilight Zone episode was taken off of Ambrose Bierce's Civil War story, just as Saltiod pointed out in this post already. So it's really a referance to the famous work of literature.
I wouldn't call it an easter egg as much as a historical reference. Both stories is based around one twin killing the other. As for Caliburs, yes indeed they are quite a bit like Link's sword abilities in the 3d Zelda games.
The material Gremlin Gizmo is a reference to the 1980s film "Gremlins".
There also is/was a gate called the Tannhauser gate...
we missed an obvious one. the trojans. a reference to the story of the trojan horse.
I seriously just saw this on the wiki...
The description for the Storm Rider Mantle mentions a god who used lightning to carve whole worlds from stone.
For those not familiar with the lore of Dark Souls; Lord Gwyn (Referred to as a god) used the power of the sun to create bolts of lightning powerful enough to peel apart the stone scales of the everlasting dragons. He then went on to use this power to make the world habitable. You could say he "Carved the world from stone using lightning."
I dunno, just seems like a coincidence to me...
I just got stuck in a room, and when GM hyperion warped me out, he was carrying a crowbar. I believe that's a Half-Life reference
Regarding the fact that the roarmulus twins are a reference to Romulus and Remus, the way you defeat them is as well. Except that instead of Romulus standing victorious, they both get blowed up and then the land is claimed by Clone0117132 in the name of the spiral order.
Pretty sure the Phantasy Star II ref hasn't been discovered by anyone and I think it's pretty obvious.
Edit: Well now after looking it up it's probably because I was too obvious and changed it last minute. Doh.
Well, now I am determined to find any traces of it.
Additionally, Hahn's name .. definitely just a name and not borrowed from Phantasy Star IV, right?
spoiler
Even the name of the game might be a reference. The anime named Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (quite absurd anime, but not that bad) is about a child who has a lot of Spiral power. With enough Spiral power and will, one can create things from nothing. Those who were in favor of using this power were named Spiral Knights, and those who are against it are named Anti-Spirals.
Not only this, but remember what one could do using Spiral power? To create things from nothing. Well, guns have infinite bullets and we can put as many bombs as we like and you may be thinking I am too high, so here is a reference.
/spoiler
Ghosts in the Machine is probably a reference to the anime named Ghost in the Shell and no, I am not an otaku. This is one of the very few references I know and looks like all the others are already stated here.
I just realised.
Firestorm Citadel, at that part where you choose between a left and a right path, on the left path there's a corridor that breaks off into 4 rooms. The corridor looks like a game of Tetris with an L shaped piece moving down the middle.
speaking of fsc...ive been seeing this thing on my milk for 2years and it always reminds me of FSC
To add the the Phantasy Star elements, Battle Sprites are quite similar to Mags in Phantasy Star Online, where you must feed them items to level them up, gain stats boosts, even where they hover behind you. (And they change a bit as they level up!)
Ghosts in the Machine is probably a reference to the anime named Ghost in the Shell and no, I am not an otaku
I remember reading an article (a long, long, long time ago), about how there are so many LoZ references because this game was heavily inspired by the Legend of Zelda series. Not sure if anyone had mentioned this yet, but I have now :D. Also, I am back baby (most of you will have no idea who I am XD).
The Divine Avenger looks vaguely like Excalibur from Sonic and the Black Knight. Also, does the Phantasy Star reference relate to the Alpha Squad? The Squad Recon is named Parma,so...
I think the Blackhawk gun and its description may be reference to Black Hawk Down movi
I still haven't finished Phantasy Star II. Finished I and III and played PSO up till Ultimate mode when my file got corrupted. (Silly gamecube)
Personally how the clockworks of Spiral Knights formed reminded me of the shells in Septerra Core.
Just to help show my point. http://www.nightsolo.net/games/septerracore/maps/worldmap.gif
The shells in Septerra Core moved and in the story every 1000 years the shells would align in a way that allowed a beam of light from the sun to hit the core and activate it for a short time. Anyone that reached the core during this time could take the power of the core for themselves if they were the chosen one. The story revolves around a tyrant artificially speeding this process up because he believed he was the chosen one. The artificial speed up of the shells creates a problem making them accelerate faster and faster too the point where the world will be destroyed.
How the levels rotated and how the core is sealed in Spiral Knights reminds me of Septerra Core.
if this counts, but the Punch n' Vise shop in the Bazaar has a buster-blade like sword. FFVII anyone?
An occurence at owl lite keep is a reference to a short story, "an occurence at owl creek bridge".
"The description for the Ash of Agni reads 'Once this bomb has left the battlefield in ashes, then, and only then, will your enemies have your permission to die.'"
Isn't the Ash of Agni older than that movie?
I'm actually kinda convinced the Callahan's design is a call out to the Zodiac from Ratchet and Clank 2: Going Commando (Locked and Loaded across the pond)
The lesser taken path or something like might be a reference to one of Robert Frost's poems.
Aren't the magic lines based off of...

@King-Tinkinzar
Let me try setting some Nutella on fire :D
--------------------
The word Polaris [right now, I'm talking about the gun :P] might be a reference to the North Star
The hall of hero's is a reference to a game called medievil for the PS1. In the game, there is a place that you can access kinda by secret call the hall of heros. In there, you can upgrade your character, or get better weapons than you would find in the levels of the game.
Or maybe it was a coincidence and I'm just thinking too hard.
Shout Out: Lots.
