What's weird about Knights is the fact that from what we see they're basically dolls. No hair, no mouth, no face to speak of. How armor is presented in game implies that the black humanoid form isn't part of their armor. That means it's either some kind of environment suit (which would also explain why Knights have glowing technicolor eyes) or Isora gets a lot of UV radiation.

@Warp Spiral knights have hair according to the vitasuit line. Not like ours I guess. They also have teeth and the ability to eat acording to various materials. Click on Hex's link.
I always thought of them as amorphous ragdoll creatures, held in place by armor. They can absorb things through their body, letting them eat etc without having a visible mouth. It's there, it's just completely internal.

I think that those "heads" that you are seeing
isn't the head at all, just the glass display. The eyes are only there so that others will know where the person is looking.
But I think they are very, very humanoid. Probably a fusion of organic and bionic.

I noticed in a mission arena (they don't give much heat, btw) that fainted knights have actually no eyes at all. not even closed eyes. it's like a computer shut down, no lights.

I don't think its a glass display, there would be no reason to cover our entire body in that, then put armor on top. Plus look at the feet; we've got to be made of something pretty squishy if we can go from wearing the hoovelike standard-issue cobalt to the dual-pegleg plate mail.

Our feet however are "compacted". It's not a physical thing though, it's only portrayal. Spiral Knights have full sized feet but they're portrayed in the game to have thinning legs. The art style of the game is heavily based of Nendoroids.

Less-short answer: I believe Knights are biomechanical soilders, engineered/grown by the dominant race on Isora (home planet) to explore the cosmos. Much like Bionicle. I'm too lazy to go into detail right now, but go look up bionicle lore. It's basically the same thing, right down to the giant ship crashing on a strange planet.
